Angry Blue is Angry
...all creatures or no creatures...
I like that... all you have to do is tap down one creature, and he can't block.
Easily accomplished by Ciphering Hands of Binding
on it!
Alternatively, put a Vial of Poison , on the battlefield, and see if he wants to kill all his creatures to block.

Also... perfect against Unleash. None of their creatures can block it.

i think this card is awesome, but I don't think it will see any play in Standard due to AEtherling being the best finisher in Blue

He won't see play in Standard, but he'll wreck in limited formats. Defs cool either way.

I think you're right... for 1 less CMC, AEtherling is harder to deal with, and can do the same amount of damage each attack.
There may be a few decks that end up using it... (perhaps there's a Kraken theme to come...?), but not likely.
Absolute killer in Limited and EDH though.

I agree with the above. The card is cute, thats all. but I really like seeing more Krakens, and at least its better than Shipbreaker Kraken

Counter the doom blade, you are playing Blue after all ;)
January 14, 2014 2:56 p.m.
That's the problem. You're playing Blue, so you're using AEtherling and not Tromokratis.

I think that this guy is an interesting Commander option. You usually don't see Blue voltron, and this guy definitely leans that way. Plus you can make whoever you attack make some difficult choices. He also seems good as part of the 99 :)

The only deck I could see running this in standard would be a Simic ramp deck, probably made to play along with Kiora, the Crashing Wave for flavor. Simic Charm could protect it during attacks. Or you could be silly and put Alpha Authority on it. Looks like it will just be a limited bomb and a toy for theme deck builders.

Off topic slightly but looking at Kiora, the Crashing Wave 's -5 I find it funny that she makes 9/9 generic kraken tokens and this guy is the legendary kraken with a p/t of 8/8.

@ JWiley129 : That's a good point, I may have to give that a try

Alpha Authority isn't silly, it's a delicious combo platter. It's not magic if all your friends don't hate you afterwards.

my simic deck was just revived, i'm so happy

Well, AEtherling gets hit with Pithing Needle and constantly needs mana but is easier to protect. But blue is about counterspells. And with Thassa for unblockable means you can still wreck face. Might have a home somewhere.

I love this dumb kraken loser, he's beautiful and I want nothing more than for him to get the respect he deserves.
Imagine:
the giant kraken storms into port, legions of soldiers rise to face the tyrant of the deep, ready for a battle. SUDDENLY, Wasteland Viper leap into the fray, wraps around Tromokratis' claw and machine gun bites the soldiers as the kraken swings its claws through their ranks.
Alternatively, Giant Kraken breaks a tiny Vial of Poison in its claw, there are no survivors.
Turns out all you need to make me love AEtherling is make him fair and a big ridiculous monster. Man, I hope he gets to see some play once Aetherling goes away
