Merry Christmas from WotC
The repeatable Lightning Bolt is nice, but he just seems a little lackluster to me. Eight mana is quite a bit for what he does.
I could see him maybe seeing play in Tron, but I doubt it. Karn is just better there.
December 25, 2014 12:51 a.m.
He comes out a bit late, but can be ramped into, though not as easily as Karn. He only takes two activations of his +2 to ult, and then he survives his ult, which is just awesome. And his +2 is Lightning Bolt. No wonder he's an 8 CMC. And he's a repeatable boardwipe. I doubt he'll see Modern play alongside Karn, maybe not even Standard play (except in some Fringe strategy, could be good in MGD), but I'll be playing him in EDH. He'll definitely be going into my Ob Nixilis deck.
December 25, 2014 12:55 a.m.
I think he will see play in Standard Control considering there is no need to splash for color. Unless, colorless becomes a big thing. That ultimate seems very good for control... I might be playing a fair amount of black for Hero's Downfall soon.
And that exile effect!
December 25, 2014 1:02 a.m.
I think my Vorel counters deck officially is now Simic Superfriends with Teferi, Temporal Archmage and this guy. Holy BALLS.
December 25, 2014 1:09 a.m.
how do you guys think he will stand in the tron archtype in modern?

I love how his ult is literally the exact opposite of Bolas'.
December 25, 2014 1:14 a.m.
@saltyk: I imagine some players will experiment with him for a short bit, but I doubt he'll stay. At 8 mana, he doesn't come out T3 like Karn, and none of his abilities let you just win the game (except the ult). He's very strong disruption, very control-y, but I don't see him anywhere other than EDH.

I love this guy. His ult makes me think the bolas we get will be a reprint of Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. Still, though, I think this guy is powerful.
December 25, 2014 1:16 a.m.
I kinda want to play him, but I don't want to make the deck to build around him...sigh.
December 25, 2014 1:17 a.m.
I play pretty much solely casual, with a whole mix of modern and EDH and fun stuff and I just want to say this will be great in casual. In my playgroup, if you run a card you have a way to get it out efficiently and this will be a fun threat. I look forward to playing with and against this.
December 25, 2014 1:30 a.m.
i honestly see this card being played over Karn Liberated not only does it hit more than one permanent it wrecks bogles, affinity, and could prob do some damage against merfolk.

Also had to comment about his ult literally being a reverse Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker ult Flavor Flavor Flavor
December 25, 2014 1:33 a.m.
On second thought, welcome to Mayael, Ugin! I'm sure you'll love some of the things you can help me with with that ult, and the supplied Doubling Season should help you out.

I will play this card. If I can get a copy or two... Sad UB Control player is sad due to monetary issues.
Oh, and he is literally (if you read the text on the card, that is) everything UB Control even needed: repeatable removal/a clock, a boardwipe, lifegain, and card advantage... And ALL IN ONE CARD. Yes. Much Yes.
December 25, 2014 1:41 a.m.
Real talk time: could this be a finisher for control? Maybe once speth is gone? Maybe not because of pearl lake?
I could also see him in green devo or just ramp in general. The fact that he can immediately clear the board is pretty awesome. Idk...maybe its just not gonna make it.

Now that's awesome. Decent from a playability standpoint, amazing from a flavor standpoint.
Now who read the next article? Fetches from KTK can be in FRF packs like shocks were in DGM! Too lazy to source it.

Clarification: in place of basic lands. Also reprints of the ten etb tapped and gain a life dual common dual lands. That can replace basics too.

Thanks Femme_Fatale, I'm on my phone and meh, linking.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING OH MY GOD.
I CALLED IT ONCE KHANS CAME OUT.
THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY.
Also I am 100% brewing around him. This will be great. My best wishes to anyone who wants to snag one or more on Prerelease night before he's a $40 card that will slowly but surely find his way to under $20 in the next months. And then skyrocket again when Modern booms again.
Either that or he pulls an 'Eldrazi Titan' on us and only goes up from day one. Who knows. Anyway, this is the best 'Happy Holidays' Wizards could give me! Anyone else quite so pumped?
December 25, 2014 2:06 a.m.
I plan to run him in control, hopefully Bolas will be printed here too and I'll get to run a Grixis list with those 2 leading XD
THE DREAM
December 25, 2014 2:08 a.m.
Woah woah woah, does he exile lands? Are lands associated with a color, and don't they have converted cost of 0? Please tell me if I'm wrong and why so I know
December 25, 2014 2:43 a.m.
SpaderAce Lands are colourles so Ugin doesn't hit them.
December 25, 2014 2:46 a.m.
SpaderAce lands are colorless unless something is otherwise modifying that, like a manland ala Celestial Colonnade or an effect like Painter's Servant.

NEW WALKER! I need to stuff this into the superfriends deck I made for EDH recently! >:3
December 25, 2014 2:49 a.m.
I was actually thinking about Painter's Servant! Thanks for bringing it up. EDH using this and the painter for mass destruction, but then the game would literally stall because Ugin would exile himself haha
December 25, 2014 2:57 a.m.
SpaderAce except Painter's Servant is banned in EDH. Also you'd have to get Ugin above 8 to exile himself due to the servant.

this time its a real Ugin card, and he is sorta meh.

If only Ugin, the Spirit Dragon's first was +3, I think then he would be much more worth his mana.
December 25, 2014 3:36 a.m.
Something about him and his ultimate seems very Griselbrandish to me...
Finally, another colourless Planeswalker, though. Now they just have to make Urza and the holy trinity will be complete!

I'd stick a 1 of into any standard deck I played, just for the lolz. Dropping that one on someone and then popping off creatures at will, especially with The Chain Veil and Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient on my side of the field..
That could get ugly, quick.
Teehee.

I like the card very much in terms of flavour but it's kind of sad that he is not very playable outside Commander.
December 25, 2014 6:50 a.m.
I think I'll put him in my Narset, Enlightened Master deck and play him for freeee

Very very flavourful. I might have to throw him in an EDH deck after his price plummets. I'm more excited about fetches being in Fate Reforged.

I cant believe I'm saying this, but i don't like him. Granted he's good but all I could think of when i first saw him was..disappoint... Id honestly wished it was a fake

Shadowfang says... #48
Anyone else notice he doesn't have the counters to kill bolas but bolas can kill him with a plus. So much disappoint..
December 25, 2014 8:43 a.m.
Shadowfang: Look at it this way: On his own, he can't actively defeat Bolas. If he has help somehow (a way to redirect targets, a Stifle spell, what have you), he can defeat Bolas. Flavor!
