Warlords of Khanar!!

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

looks to be the next expansion set coming after magic 2015!! Anyone else as psyched as i am? What do you expect to see from this set in terms of creature types, mechanics, and so on? I searched up khanar and it seems to be a small village in nepal. So what could that mean thematically?

Apparently Wizards filed a trademark for it in September. (http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/the-rumor-mill/512111-warlords-of-khanar-potential-fall-2014-expansion)

It could still be a D&D expansion though, or something totally different.

Servo_Token says... #8

I'm not certain that this is Magic Related, seeing as their name is of a real place.

Magic isn't known to take the names of actual places in the world, but games like D&D have before.

March 10, 2014 8 p.m.

flyguy says... #9

@ThatBlueMage- I may be completely wrong here, but it seems like magic definitely takes real world references- (Bazaar of Baghdad , Ali from Cairo , and a few more I can't think of.)

That's not even touching on non-places or flavor text.

March 10, 2014 8:13 p.m.

anewsome says... #10

@flyguy - Library of Alexandria is another example.

March 10, 2014 8:21 p.m.

kmcree says... #11

All of those examples are super old, and from a set (arabian nights) with all kinds of political correctness issues (Jihad ). My guess is that Wizards wants to avoid anything like that in the future, and if you notice no newer sets or cards reference specific real life people/places.

I'm sure that if I were to make a random thing up that sounded cool there would be a place in the world that had that name. For all we know Khanar is a totally obsure village located in nepal that not many people have heard of. who knows.

Rhinowarrior says... #15

Saldur? idk

March 10, 2014 8:30 p.m.

Servo_Token says... #16

Core sets' aren't based on a plane, so I really wouldn't use a card from a core set as an example here.

I may also be wrong though, and this is actually wizards' first step in creating MTG in real life.

March 10, 2014 8:31 p.m.

Rhinowarrior says... #17

saldus is a place in latvia.

March 10, 2014 8:31 p.m.

cschiller says... #18

Obscure villages in Nepal isn't really real life. A set called WWII would fit that mold, but here some idiot may have seen that name and thought it sounded cool, then tossed it in as set name.

March 10, 2014 8:33 p.m.

flyguy says... #19

Well, I'd agree that Wizards probably isn't trying to bring MtG into real life- that would be way to controversial, but it's also not impossible that they are referencing a real place directly.

March 10, 2014 8:34 p.m.

OpenFire says... #20

This is ridiculous. There will not be a set named WARLORDS OF KHANAR as a mtg set unless things go seriously downhill.

March 10, 2014 9:15 p.m.

Rhinowarrior says... #21

i take it you do not enjoy that title?

March 10, 2014 9:48 p.m.

Servo_Token says... #22

it is a very basic, we're-just-starting-an-mmorpg title.

With all of the creativity that Wizards has staffed, you would imagine that the set names - you know, the thing that they label their company by for 3 months at a time - would be a bit more innovative and attention keeping.

[Character class] of [middle eastern place] has been the basic rpg name formula since the inception of which.

Sarkhan Vol is a primarily red planeswalker who came from a plane scourged by war. This plane was controlled by constantly battling warlords, who had a tradition of slaying dragons for sport and glory, driving the beasts to extinction. This horrified the shamans of the plane, who worshiped the dragon as the pinnacle of predation. Look at this

Guys, Sarkhan Vol s birthplace? I think so. I can foresee Dragon/shaman tribal stuff.

I think if it's the name of a small village somewhere, that's coincidence. There are lots of villages, at least one of them would have to have whatever resonant-sounding name they came up with!

Hoping for dragons and Sarkhan. That would be awesome. We need more dragons in this game!

Google exists. If OP guy knew it was already a thing, then I'm sure as hell that Wizards could figure it out.

megawurmple says... #37

Warlords of Khanar sound like a pretty stupid name in my opinion. I can't see it being the name of a Magic set. Wizards will normally name the first set of a block after the plane it's set on (see Theros, Innistrad, Zendikar and so on) unless they are revisiting a plane (Scars of Mirrodin).

March 11, 2014 4:24 p.m.

10vernothin says... #38

But then there's:

Ravnica, City of Guilds

Champions of Kamigawa

Shards of Alara

I mean, Khanar sounds boring and uninformative. Warlords of Khanar makes it not only convey the overall theme (central asia, feudal, conflicted times etc), but also sounds more exciting.

March 11, 2014 4:34 p.m.

Korombos says... #39

@ Crymson if we get an actual MTG set called "Warlords of Khanar," I vow to call it nothing other than "Mystic Warlords of Ka'a"

March 11, 2014 5:12 p.m.

Arachnarchist says... #40

I think TitansFTW nailed it. In modern sets, WotC tends to use the name of the plane when possible. It seems like the "Khanar" is a much more likely name.

There are the exceptions 10vernothin mentioned but lets examine those:

Ravnica City of Guilds is still the name of a plane, albeit with a bit of a subtitle. The Shards of Alara (Bant, Grixis, Naya, Esper, Jund) were not technically all on the same plane so it wasn't really "Alara." Which leaves us with "Champion's of Kamigawa." The set had a legendary theme, so it makes sense to focus less on the actual plane and more on the characters (The Champions, Betrayers, and Saviors).

A name like Warlords of Khanar would put quite a bit of focus on the "Warlords." At this point it seems relevant to point out that Kamigawa is considered by some (Including Mark Rosewater) to be one of the worst designed sets in recent memory. So I don't think they're in a hurry to retry it. Also consider that we just came out of two blocks with a higher than normal concentration of legendary creatures. RtR had the 10 guild masters and the 10 maze runners. And Theros will ultimately have 15 legendary gods plus a host of other legendary creatures.

OpenFire says... #41

I find it impossible that Wizards will make a block named warlords of khanar considering how much they have been playing up the next one. Also, where's your source?

March 11, 2014 5:16 p.m.

Servo_Token says... #42

@OpenFire

I looked it up, and the source that I found (the most credible, at least) was the same guy on MTGSalvation forums that posted the copyright info back in September. He was the same that did the same with Theros the previous year. However, it's just a copyright that we have to go on. I'm still doubtful that this name will be legit. And if it is, come spoiler season, I may just find myself playing Modern for a year.

Isn't Sarkhan Vol from a plane where warlords have hunted the dragons to extinction?

March 12, 2014 5:35 p.m.

KrosanTusker says... #44

Yeah..!

Also, fun fact:
"sarkan" is "Slovak" for dragon!

It tells you that on the mtgsalvation wiki. However, it doesn't tell you that "sarkan" is also Malay for "inflated" and Turkish for "hanging" and "beetle". Thanks to Google translate for that one.

Sarkahn is from a different plane entirely, Mongseng.

wizards also filed for "kahns of tarkir" and "Dragons of tarkir"

these dont sound like set names and are likely for D&D rather than magic, thats my opinion on the matter

KrosanTusker says... #49

I don't get the big deal. It's a set name. Get over it. Apart from the embarrassment of telling people your going to "Pro Tour Warlords of Khanar", it wouldn't really matter if it did turn out to be a set name for Magic, even if it is a bit unoriginal. Not to me, anyway. Thoughts?

Although, Maro said the next block is based on a unique block structure, so if those three names were for us, that would create a unique block structure with a one-set block (set on Khanar) and a two-set block (set on Tarkir) if those are plane names. The Autumn set could be a stand-alone set like Rise of the Eldrazi!? Maybe...

March 13, 2014 2:50 p.m.

GrixisGuybru says... #50

The title really doesn't matter as long as the set has good cards and good storyline.
