Waste Not is such a good card...

For anyone that doesn't know this is the card that was created during the "You Make The Card" voting, which previously produced Crucible of Worlds . Waste Not will be released along with M15. A 2 cmc enchantment that does all that? Bringing discard decks back to standard with a vengeance and feeding the Zombie EDH nerds even more. This card is going to be SO expensive. There has got to a huge list of things this will make broken. Hypnotic Specter comes to mind first but even that is just the tip of the iceberg. Rakdos's Return to get a little more into it. Liliana of the Veil gets a bit more expensive. Just so much fun to be had.

It will be in Standard with Thoughtseize for a year.

With Rakdos's Return , Duress , and Mind Rot for a few months (without reprints).

Makes Thoughtseize ridiculously good. Discard a combat trick and cantrip or make a 2/2 zombie for B. Just insane. I thought they were going to release it for Journey into Nyx...

Mind Rot was in return to ravnica.

Discard is now a thing. Prepare your Ravenous Rats reprints.

This is going to be an awesome card in casual play and competitive play for a bit. I wouldn't be surprised to see it show up in some fringe decks in modern/legacy, like the pox and loam decks.

Servo_Token says... #7

Oh, it's definitely getting a 4 of in my Pox deck.

Someone help, I can't hold all of this value!

Liliana of the Veil is going to love it. My wallet, probably not..

Mind Rot has been printed in 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, M10, M11, M12, M13, RTR, and M14. It has so much synergy with Waste Not that I hope it gets printed in M15.

Turn 3: Cast Mind Rot , opponent discards 2 lands, Thoughtseize + Mind Rot

I think the biggest thing that will be fun with this is it doesn't require that you force them to discard. If they discard at EOT that will also be very helpful, making them cringe as they are forced into either drawing fewer cards, playing more, or ditching the wrong cards. Sphinx's Revelation players better watch out how much X will be. This thing is gonna be insane in my Sweating Bullets deck. Draw a ton of cards and provide me mana/creatures/card draw? Okay :D

There is going to be so many uses for this. I'm sure Mind Rot and Duress will get reprinted. Probably will get a few new ones too.

I don't think it deserves a 4 slot outside of standard necessarily, But it's still a beautifully made card. I only hope it's just a rare, and not a mythic.

Hopefully they print some sort of The Rack effect so we can play mono b hand rape

Shrieking Affliction is in standard

It's only a rare. The official card image wasn't included in the first post.

Not showing up in preview. Here's a link: http://media.wizards.com/images/magic/daily/features/2014/229fjk2sdalkfeatwk01_en_card_wastenot.jpg

I don't even care if discard isn't strong, I will love playing a deck using this so much.

I thought in making it Dimir, then I saw 2 Spirit of the Labyrinth that I pulled of some boosters... Then remembered Stoneblades with Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Liliana of the Veil ... Going to buy FTV20, some goods UB cards, like TMS and Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni ....

So, would it be viable as a help hand on Esper? Or two-colors at max? Because W/B has a lot of exile hand cards that, even not discarding, help to reduce your opponents hand, so the Zombies and card draws would just be a secundary "win-con", and Dimir has lot of discards too... So many possibilities.

I'm feeling pitty by Izzet players...

turn 1 Manaforge Cinder
turn 2 waste not
turn 3 Liliana's Caress + mana rock + Wheel of Fortune , let the fun begin.

ChiefBell says... #21

Yeh but the thing is.... discard isn't really a thing and it's not that strong. Rakdos's Return will cycle out soon etc. It won't be expensive, it's not great. Mono black discard is only a marginal deck in modern as well. Meh. It's not a spike card.

March 14, 2014 8:26 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #22

gufymike summed it up in two word: fringe play. Seriously, it's completely mediocre.

March 14, 2014 8:28 p.m.

Eduardogbg says... #23

Do you think that, Chief? Wow... But... Your mono-black discard seemed to be doing well...

March 14, 2014 8:53 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #24

It's a casual deck. There's no way I'd try to claim that it's a tournament winner or highly competitive. It's fun, not good.

I also wonder how good it will do in a nekusar edh deck. Also, i don't like waste nots' first ability. It's second can be pretty good, depending on what you have to use it for. The third ability is pure card advantage. If you play Duress for example and they discard the card, then you draw a card replacing the Duress . I see it having potential, though i have no idea how good it will actually be. I like it a lot, but that is just from a mainly casual player.

Card sucks, it triggers the same as Liliana's Caress and Megrim neither of those cards see play in 8 Rack because they don't do enough.

I bought a proxy playset, and have tested it in Pox & 8Rack. Card sucks in both. When it's good it's fun but most of the time it's a waste of space.

8 rack gets much better with this. Chump blocking, mana acceleration,cantrip....what else could you ask for t2?

March 15, 2014 1:10 a.m.

megawurmple says... #31

I'm with ChiefBell and APPLE01DOJ here. In discard-focused decks (which aren't amazing in the first place), you'd rather play Wrench Mind or another Inquisition of Kozilek on turn 2, or a Blightning on turn 3. Any later than that and Waste Not isn't going to have any effect as your opponent isn't going to be discarding many cards anyway. It just doesn't fit anywhere into the discard strategy. In anything other than a discard deck, it just sucks. Overall, this card is very mediocre.

Eduardogbg says... #32

Think that if this card reach the point to give you two zombies, it would had be worth it mana price and hand slot. Notion Thief + Whispering Madness is already a really devasting combo, even if not that competitive. But, think in this combo giving you even more cards, mana to cast them and some blockers.

It's not a win-con, just utility. I belive that it can not be so good to every deck with Thoughtseize run it, but, it effect, make it worth the slot on deck list on the right deck, the matter is just find the right deck.

March 15, 2014 7:10 p.m.

Should I save my Thoughtseize for when Waste Not is released? Will Thoughtseize go up in price?

April 1, 2014 10:36 p.m.

The Doctor says... #34

Probably only a couple of bucks.

April 1, 2014 10:49 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #35

Honestly Thoughtseize will make Thoughtseize expensive so just hold onto it until theros rates out of standard by a few weeks and you'll see it hit high cost again due to it's awesomeness in Legacy + Modern

Considering how pathetic things like Megrim , Quest for the Nihil Stone , and even the best of the bunch Liliana's Caress are, I'm not too hopeful for this card being too good in discard or 8rack strategies. It just slows you down too much. Granted, its powers are much more powerful than simply dealing damage, but still, the turn you play this is a turn you're not playing a good discard spell, and it has very little lategame potential.
