What do you want from JOU now?

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Now that a good chunk of the set has been spoiled I wanted to know what you guys still want from JOU?

Personally I want a Savannah Lions or Elite Vanguard that is an enchantment creature with some constellation ability, even if it's mediocre.

Dritz says... #2

I want a Precinct Captain /Wojek Halberdiers combo sort of thing. 3 power with upside like the Halberdiers and be a board presence granting creature. Probably asking for too much but I want it to happen. It is also unlikely to happen because they printed Aegis of the Gods as the 'ability bear' of the set. I can still dream though.

Interesting, here's what im thinking:

WW

Whenever creature attacks, you may pay 1/1W (not sure). If you do put a 1/1 soldier token onto the battlefield tapped and attacking.

3/2

The LAST thing I want to see is more powerful white stuff. Can't another color get a break here?

Magiclover318 says... #5

Blue could use to get a nice bump, especially when RTR rotates

April 17, 2014 9:34 p.m.

trentfaris242 says... #6

@kmcree You're joking, right? Outside of UW/x white has seen next to no competitive play in months. Keep the white love coming. I'm getting sick and tired of blue and black everywhere.

April 17, 2014 9:38 p.m.

Another 1 drop dork please. Noble Hierarch reprint would be nice. Or even Birds of Paradise or Llanowar Elves .

April 17, 2014 9:38 p.m.

kmcree says... #8

@trentfaris242: Have you followed the spoilers at all? White already got tons of good stuff.

April 17, 2014 9:40 p.m.

Dalektable says... #9

I second trentfaris242. I've been trying to make white work all RTR/THS standard, It's about time white got some love.

April 17, 2014 9:41 p.m.

BorosPlayer says... #10

kmcree Uhhhh I'm thinking black is dominating: Master of the Feast and Brain Maggot so far on top of an already Pro Tour winning deck. Mono white aggro has gotten only Launch the Fleet (not sure if that is even good enough), Deicide for SB, Aegis of the Gods for SB, and maaaaaaaaybe Sightless Brawler .

April 17, 2014 9:43 p.m.

GeoKinetic says... #11

Yeah white's been getting some good stuff but i think it's probably the least played colour in the format, yes there's control but those are azorius decks that may splash black, not really white decks. I think the white love is great and should diversify a control dominant format, even if only for a little while.

super ninja'd by Dalektable and trentfaris242. I guess that's wahat happens when you only read the first few posts.

April 17, 2014 9:44 p.m.

kmcree says... #13

White (with various splashes) has gotten Athreos, Iroas, Godsend, Launch the Fleet, Banishing Light, Aegis of the Gods, and Ajani, and Deicide will be maybe the best spot removal in the next standard rotation.

April 17, 2014 9:45 p.m.

kmcree says... #14

Blue and Green have each gotten next to nothing.

April 17, 2014 9:49 p.m.

I'd like to see white get something like Odric, Master Tactician . White is getting a lot of love finally and I think something like that would push white up there with MUD and MBD.

April 17, 2014 9:52 p.m.

TexasDice says... #16

I want some White-hate, because right now, White is waaaaaaaaaay to powerful for limited.

It's like Wizards completely reversed M14.

April 17, 2014 9:55 p.m.

Dalektable says... #17

Blue is one of the strongest colors in standard already by far, if it was given much more along with black they would dominate the format more so than they already do. Everything needs to be balanced out a bit.

April 17, 2014 9:55 p.m.

kmcree says... #18

@Dalektable: while blue is currently the most powerful, almost all of its big pieces will be rotating in September. MUB is dying (if it isn't already dead) and U/W/x control will be dead as soon as Sphinx's Revelation , Supreme Verdict and Detention Sphere are gone.

Basically, white is going to absolutely dominate the next rotation, with black as the next best option. The other colors haven't gotten much love at all.

April 17, 2014 10 p.m.

BorosPlayer says... #19

kmcree that assumes there are no good UW/x or MUB cards in Huey OR M15, which very will may not be true.

April 17, 2014 10:03 p.m.

abenz419 says... #20

@kmcree whites getting all the love now, because it's gotten absolutely none in the first two sets of this block. Yes, there is Heliod, God of the Sun and Brimaz, King of Oreskos but there is nothing you can put in a deck around those to make white a true competitor in the standard meta right now. Hopefully, now that it's finally starting to get some love, that'll change and help diversify the meta some more so it isn't just Mono-U, Mono-B, and control all over the place.

April 17, 2014 10:05 p.m.

Dritz says... #21

@kmcree

One thing I think you are leaving out at this point is that it isn't just going to be 'these colors lose tons of stuff' it is also going to be a whole new rotation and White is not exempt from that. It loses things like Precinct Captain , Fiendslayer Paladin , Dryad Militant , Boros Charm , Boros Reckoner and more. it isn't just like the other colors are going to immediately suck because what are some of the most powerful and efficient control spells ever printed rotate at the same time.

Beyond that, sure, Athreos, God of Passage and Iroas, God of Victory are great, but that doesn't mean that Kruphix, God of Horizons or any of the other, already printed, archetype enabling cards will suddenly become terrible. (Grey Merchant of Asphodel, Master of Waves , Thassa, God of the Sea , Desecration Demon et cetera.)

April 17, 2014 10:11 p.m.

Arorsthrar says... #22

I don't want black to get anything else thats good. Black has what most people consider the best card in the format (Thoughtseize ), and has been getting decent creatures and extremely efficient removal that allows black to deal with more threats than ever before (Hero's Downfall , Bile Blight ). I play MBD and don't want it to get any more good cards because it seems like Wizards have been saying "play black or bust".

But now white has been getting its fair share of strong cards, starting with Brimaz, King of Oreskos , then followed by Banishing Light , and finally Deicide . White's creatures are now pretty strong, and Banishing Light is a downgraded Detention Sphere available to more decks and can hit Detention Sphere . Deicide hits the numerous enchantment creatures, shuts down Blue devotion, and is instant speed to remove Detention Sphere .

It seems like after Theros, Blue has been losing card quality. Nullify seems to be the most played card from BNG, and so far from JOU, blue has been pretty lacking. Theros harbored Master of Waves , Thassa, God of the Sea , and Dissolve . Otherwise, the majority of the rest of the power of control decks and MUD have been coming from RTR, which means at this rate, blue decks will be hit hard post-rotation, leaving Black and White to dominate the meta (red and green to me seem to be pretty average currently).

I'm hoping for something to give MUD a second chance, because a lot of players feel that after MUD's performance in ProTour theros, MUD was "overpowered". However, the Bile Blight and Drown in Sorrow seemed to decimate MUD's popularity, and JOU seems to be what's going to end it, with Silence the Believers being a great answer for Thassa, God of the Sea and only getting stronger late game.

Deicide has sparked a lot of controversy. Many regard this card as extremely flavorful and very powerful, especially in a set like this. Others say it ruined what Wizards had going for them by allowing 1 two-drop to eliminate an entire god from a deck, making them significantly weaker, if not near useless.

All that being said, cards that give MUD a second chance would be cool, along with a third enabler to complement Master of Waves and Thassa, God of the Sea . I think we're due for another pro-black card, especially since the only card to be pro-black currently is black itself.

something to the effect of this would be great:

CMC: UUU

2/2

Protection from Black.

What I want? Something playable in blue would be nice for a change. You know, actually decentish for a change.

April 17, 2014 11:01 p.m.

SpaderAce says... #24

I can agree with kmcree to an extent. While white does lack some of the types of overpowered cards that black has access to, it still benefits from Brimaz, King of Oreskos , Elspeth, Sun's Champion , and other various cards already mentioned from JOU. But the only thing going for blue/green is Kruphix, God of Horizons , but he doesn't have anything to play off of from the Theros block.

April 17, 2014 11:02 p.m.

abenz419 says... #25

Prophet of Kruphix , Horizon Chimera , Kiora, the Crashing Wave , Kiora's Follower are all U/G cards from theros block... not to mention Polukranos, World Eater , Arbor Colossus , Courser of Kruphix , Master of Waves , Thassa, God of the Sea , Nylea, God of the Hunt , Boon Satyr , Sylvan Caryatid which are all mono G or mono U cards that could be included in a UG deck. Those are all just cards from the first two sets that i can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more and I'm sure there are others from JOU, like Dictate of Kruphix and Dictate of Karametra , that may see some standard play and there are still cards left to be spoiled. If you think U and G haven't gotten anything in the theros block at all then your not looking lol.

April 17, 2014 11:33 p.m.

Arorsthrar says... #26

I see Kruphix, God of Horizons working only in control-based decks, but not control as in the stereotypical U/W/X control. I see Kruphix as more of card that people will build "X" decks around (probably Bant), to exploit Mistcutter Hydra , Sphinx's Revelation , Polukranos, World Eater , etc.

April 17, 2014 11:44 p.m.

SpaderAce says... #27

That's what I was meaning, Arorsthrar. Yeah, ok abenz419, you're right that U/G has a decent amount of cards, but like i said, Kruphix, God of Horizons doesn't have a whole lot of CONTROL that would work with him, other than Polukranos, World Eater

April 17, 2014 11:49 p.m.

GeoKinetic says... #28

I think what some people may be overlooking is that blue has counterspells which answer everything, and so is still in a position to beat Deicide , just keeping it in mind after sideboarding if your playing MUD, and putting yourself in a position to counter it.

April 18, 2014 12:10 a.m.

abenz419 says... #29

lol, actually you never said he didn't have a whole lot of CONTROL that would work with him, you just said he doesn't have anything to play off of from the theros block. Even still, there is Dissolve , Nullify , and Swan Song which are all pretty solid counter spells for everything that the Theros block offers. The new Dictate of Kruphix is good for card draw and the downside of giving your opponent cards should hurt too much. If your playing control you should have plenty of answers anyways. Then you even have the option of splashing white for bant which gives you access to new cards like Banishing Light , Decide, Aegis of the Gods and Eidolon of Rhetoric which all have the potential to at the very least be sideboard worthy in a bant control deck.

Just because Arorsthrar see's him being used in a control deck doesn't mean that'll be his only use. I could see him possibly making an appearance in very creature heavy simic midrange deck. Utilizing ramp, Prophet of Kruphix and Kruphix himself to to pump out massive Mistcutter Hydra s and making huge Polukranos, World Eater s with the extra mana you can gain with Kruphix. Arbor Colossus can be included as another big threat with reach and/or Prognostic Sphinx could see it's way in there to constantly set up your draws with it's scry 3 ability. As rotation happens and the top decks lose some key pieces (everything but thassa and Master of Waves for mono-U and Desecration Demon , Underworld Connections , Ultimate Price , Devour Flesh and possibly Doom Blade if it's not in M15 for mono-B) it'll open up the door for new things (possibly UG) to maybe have an impact and the standard meta.

They didn't really get there with minotaurs either, or centaurs

April 18, 2014 2:25 a.m.

beakedbard says... #36

Well there is at least a Deathtouch Minotaur lord now that's something but i agree I'm annoyed with the lack of tribal with all the weird not often used tribes they used for this. No Satyr lord no Gorgon lord Centaur and Minotaur lords are okay but not that great.

April 18, 2014 2:28 a.m.

GeoKinetic says... #37

The thing that I'm annoyed about for minotaurs is that the curve for minotaurs is shocking, there are 4 minotaur lords, 3 of which are 3 mana, one is 5. There is one at 1 mana, and 2, 2 mana minotaurs which realistically are pretty bad. So in the end you have a clogged 3 mana slot, with the lords and Boros Reckoner , you have a gap at 2 mana with only one 1 drop, and then you have a 5 mana lord.
