Which Planes Will be Represented in Commander 2016?

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Posted on Oct. 18, 2016, 11:07 a.m. by DemonDragonJ

Previews for Commander 2016 begin next week, so I wish to speculate about which planes shall be represented in that set.

I believe that it is safe to presume that the nephilim shall be reprinted, so Ravnica shall be represented by them, but I also would like to see cards representing Kamigawa, Lorwyn, and Ulgrotha, since it is unlikely that there shall be any blocks set on those planes at any time in the near future.

It also would be nice to see cards from Dominaria, since WotC has not featured that plane in a long time, and I myself would like to see cards from New Phyrexia, as well.

It is not likely that there will be many (or any) cards from Alara and Tarkir, since those planes focused on three-color combinations, and thus, do not have four-color combinations.

It is also possible that planes that have not yet been featured in a block may appear, as well, such as Vryn, Valla, Regatha, Muraganda, Shandalar, and so forth.

What does everyone else say about this? Which planes do you believe will be represented in Commander 2016?

Sloanan says... #2

Well a few weeks back they accidentally put up a profile for Ludevic on Wizard's website, so I'm imagining that we'll definitely get an Innistrad shout-out.

I would think ravnica would be pretty big with 4 colors. I remember watching a MaRo interview awhile ago that there was a possibility of combining 2 ally colored rav guilds.

Phaetion says... #4

I have a feeling that they'll use a plane (or create a new one) just to give the color combinations names so we don't have to refer to them as "Yore-Tiller colors," etc.

I, personally, dream about that the B/W/G/R plane is the dinosaur plane and we get a shitload of dinosaurs. It's unlikely, I know, BUT A MAN CAN HAVE DREAMS, K?

Seeing as how Kamigawa is my favorite block I would love to see some love for the plane. I would also like to see some new additions to New Phyrexia, although the infect mechanic would certainly need a rework for commander if they were planning to bring that back.

LeonDaniels, I really doubt it, Kamigawa is considered one of Wizard's biggest duds, even though I find it pretty intriguing. However, I'd be cool witH seeing a 4 color plane, maybe Shandalar?

We got Kaseto, Orochi Archmage last year. I doubt we'll get another Kamigawa legend.

I really, really, REALLY hope they do another version of Maelstrom Wanderer in colors. Maybe he's picked up black along his travels. So wherever that guy's from lol

I'd also like to see a legendary changeling. So lorwyn as well

I've already preordered the deck from star city games as I had most of the shocks and fetch lands in those colors. So my hopes are high!

October 18, 2016 1:38 p.m.

Anyone else fans of the "Volvers" back on Dominaria?

I could easily see something like Anavolver etc. fine tuned and turned into legends. Easier to cast with a single color cost but could fall into a color identity by giving them color costed abilities. A return to Dominaria would be a welcome one in my opinon anyway.

the interesting question is how do they make playable 4-color manabases for the $35 deck price tag?

Not to get anyone triggered buuuut........ What's everyone's thoughts on which will be the best and why?

October 18, 2016 2:38 p.m.

Anything with will undoubtedly be the most powerful. Since that is arguably already the most potent color combination in edh.

October 18, 2016 2:49 p.m.

Grind with the tri-color taplands. That or they've created new four-color lands.

And yeah, I definitely feel like and will probably be the strongest, though I'm interested to see what they'll do with .

Raging_Squiggle, why do you believe that (please give only a brief answer)?

October 18, 2016 3:10 p.m.

Dismay says... #19

DemonDragonJ, to answer your question: In EDH, Black has the best tutors, Blue has the best draw/interactivity, and green has the best ramp. It's slightly more nuanced than that but that's as quick a summation as could be given.

October 18, 2016 3:29 p.m.

Sultai contains the colors that are able to respond to everything. Plus it's very combo-centric.

Green: Artifact/ enchantment death. Heavy ramping. And Tooth and Nail
Blue: Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift effects. Mystical Tutor. Palinchron + Deadeye Navigator .
Black: Heavy creature control, Black tutors.

Combining the colors into Simic, Golgari, and Dimir also give benefits but that is going into a tangent.

October 18, 2016 3:32 p.m.

I think will be warrior tribal. That would be awesome. Blue is the least tribal color (except for merfolk). I want to go off with a Bramblewood Paragon. Would be sick, just the tribe lacks all their good cards in the same colors. Bramblewood Paragon, Lovisa Coldeyes, Chief of the Edge. I also think the non-green combination will be some sort of artifacts.

October 18, 2016 6:02 p.m.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised at all by non-green being artifact-y. Red and Esper have a long track record of artifact-focused themes, and green has a long track record for artifact-hate. At the very least I hope at least one of the non-green commanders synergizes with artifacts in some way.

K34 says... #23

If the nonred deck isn't reanimation focused, then wotc is bad its only job.

greyninja says... #24

@K34, definitely with you there.

if theyre printing four legends in each color; they have four chances to get it right

October 18, 2016 10:30 p.m.

Wee_Dragonaut says... #25

1): If the Commander does not center around artifacts, I will be seriously surprised.

2): I am guessing that the deck will be either a reanimator deck or a "Whenever a creature dies..." deck, mainly because all of the colors have strong(ish) roots in death.

3): seems like it will probably be a political commander deck, in the likes of Zedruu the Greathearted. If not, WotC will probably make a deck about protecting things.

4): I am pretty confident that the deck will be heavy control/stax. And in my opinion, I think that these commanders will be a tiny bit weaker than the others, mainly because I think that is the strongest color combination for commander.

5): When I think of the colors , I tend to think of chaos, mainly because there is no white and those colors tend to lack order. So maybe this deck will be about destruction and disorder?

6): Remember that the Commander deck must synergize fully with all of the possible commanders. Don't you think it would be difficult to have a consistent deck because the commanders all have to be different?

Just my two cents...

DemonDragonJ says... #26

This topic is drifting away from its original subject and into speculation about the general themes of the decks, but I hope to see new angels, demons, and dragons in them, since those are my favorite creature types in this game. I also would like to see new fairies, who have not received much attention since the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block.

Sloanan, I really hope that Ludevic appears in this set, since he was a prominent figure in the stories of both Innistrad blocks, yet never actually appeared in person in either of them. Therefore, he is long overdue for an appearance in the cards, but he will most likely be black/blue, with no other colors, so I hope that this set contains two- or three-colored legendary creatures, in addition to the four-colored creatures who will be the face cards for each deck.

Also, if Ludevic is to finally appear in the cards, then I hope that Edgar Markov shall appear, as well, since he is hugely important to the story of Innistrad, but did not personally appear in either block.

Does it seem odd that this product is coming out in less than a month and yet almost nothing has even been revealed about it?

October 19, 2016 2:35 a.m.

@cklise, after some of the major illegal leaks of spoilers in the Oath of the Gatewatch set; wizards has been very strict with how and when info is released.

My playgroup and i use the nephilims unofficially as commanders i play white green red blue. Mainly play off the top of my library and use single target spells. Maybe alara will get a shoutout.

October 19, 2016 7:44 a.m.

Sloanan says... #30

@ DemonDragonJ: Yeah, I think those two and Hal & Alena are the four (three? H&A are almost always mentioned as a duo) most requested Innistrad legendaries. Not that I expect them to do this, but it would be kinda cool if each pack was plane-themed, meaning there'd be an Innistrad deck with all 4 of them, a Ravnica one with varying guildsmen, and so on. Probably not cuz you can't really represent the planes with a missing color, but I'd be intrigued if they did.

DemonDragonJ

I always said/forsaw (or at least hoped) Ludevic was Simic colours due to the nature of his immortality/longevity as well as necromancy and dealings as a merchant/smuggler, but with that last aspect Dimir colours seem more appropriate. Personally disappointed at the prospect, but a non-mill Dimir commander is exciting in and of itself!

Named_Tawyny says... #32

@Grind, if I had to guess, other than the obvious (tri-lands, Command Tower, Terramorphic Expanse, etc...), each 'four colour' deck will be primarily focused on one or two colours, with the other two or three being splashes, and largely for activated abilities.

Sloanan: Now you got my hopes up for a Hal & Alena legend again. I'll be ready to have my dreams crushed by another stupid spider legendary that had no right to exist in the first place. I should also mention that they were only mentioned in green cards but could ad most be

October 19, 2016 9:05 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #34

Phaetion, it is true that Ishkanah has no connection to the story, at all, but Mark Rosewater himself said that players had been desiring a legendary spider for a long time, so WotC finally gave it to them. However, I do feel that a legendary spider could have been introduced in any set, at all, so I do agree with you that it is very tragic that there has not yet been a card of Hal and Alena.

October 19, 2016 10:13 a.m.

RicketyEng says... #35

Don't expect to see a Hal and Alena card anytime soon. They are similar characters in circumstance as Gisa and Geralf; they were created as characters in the story, but that happened after the set design is done. Wizards did not know until this spring that the players like Hal and Alena, so they are not likely to appear on a card for at least another two years.

The previews have begun, and, thus far, the following planes are represented: Dominaria, Zendikar, Alara (Esper, specifically), Mirrodin/New Phryexia, Innistrad, and Theros, which is an excellent variety of planes, thus far.

Tarkir is now represented in this set, as well, with the card Vial Smasher the Fierce.
