Who Do You Want/Expect to See Die?

Yes, another damned thread about War of the Spark, I know you all must be sick of it by now. But with so many walkers in one place, it just stands to reason there will be some casualties.

You can submit wild headcanons. You can submit careful speculation. Any and every variety of vorthos is welcome here. Now let’s see what you all think... (and yes, I will definitely be commenting)

Well, if we give by the latest video Liliana and Dack aren't going to make it. Disappointing on the former... Holding hope that they save Lily at least. But let's see about everyone else.

Who I think have a chance of not making it is anyone with a weak story. I'm not up to date on all lore but I mean there are walkers that aren't a large part in the grand scheme of things. Arlinn Kord, Hautli, Angrath, and Saheeli are all relatively new and expendable.

Also, I am starting to have a theory about the Introduction of new walkers and the future of the Gatewatch. We already know Nissa was wanting to leave to help her own (enter Green Walker). Gideon with his new sword may after be like "Hey, Erebos should see my new toy" (enter White Walker). Lily could possibly die and if not may need time to come to terms with her mortality (enter Black Walker). Chandra... this is kind of a leap but through flavor text is sounds like Dovin shuts her down. Perhaps this further dampens faith in her powers and she returns to Regatha (enter Red Walker). And Jace... that's a whole other can of worms. In short if the Gatewatch stays together with a bunch of rookies there'll have to be a leader and who else but the MTG poster boy... or Gideon who knows. Alternatively, this could be the first and last time we see these new walkers. More about Jace below.

So for who I want to go... Team everyone else, screw Bolas. Just gunna get that off my chest now. As for Jace I feel he either needs to die or be utterly changed by this event. To explain, as far as we know Bolas has 2 main threats 1v1: Ugin, and Jace. Not too sure about Ugin specifics only that he's been a main 'Thorn in Bolas's Side', whereas Jace has come close before to getting the upper hand on Bolas Telepathically. So in the finally event I say Jace and Bolas have and Ultimate Battle of Minds where Jace ends up crippling Bolas's mind but it causes him damage or he basically has a breakdown and gives in to the 'for lack of better terminology' the dark side.

Think that's about all I got... hopefully it's not too disorganized. Nothing here is backed up by facts just speculation based on observation and the bits and pieces of lore I have read. Enjoy.

I want Jace to die. But I don't think he will because he's still WOTC poster boy.

I'm also predicting Ugin's death.

Okay.

Mj3913, I see the merit in your point. I’d kinda love for Huatli to die (I found her boring and a lil obnoxious), I’d be intrigued by a story where Angrath dies and the watch has to deliver news of his death to his family. Enter Kaldheim.

Anyway I think we really need to do away with any teams. No more than three planeswalkers should be on the same side unless the threat is something unprecedented. And after this, it shouldn’t be.

dbpunk you may be surprised by this, you may not, but I actually love Jace and he is the only character thus far other than Lili who has anything faintly resembling development. But I do want him out of the story. What do I mean? It’s simple.

I want the last chapter that involves Jace (excluding flashbacks) to be about Jace and Vraska purchasing a ship on Ixalan and two rings. I want them to be in a committed relationship without a real label. Maybe marriage, maybe best friends, perhaps something in between. Doesn’t matter to them. I want Jace to appear some time later, when there is a real threat to be dealt with, but not soon. By the time he returns, he’s an older man, taking a sort of Teferi role, but with less abnormal aging and more living s.o.

I really don't think that's going to happen with Jace, mainly because a) he's literally the face of magic at this point (despite a lot of people not being a fan) and b) he still has unfinished business with Vryn and dealing with the memories he lost. Until WOTC finds a new poster boy Planeswalker and the Vryn storyline is finished, he most likely won't be done.

Similarly, although the young and new Planeswalkers heroes are expendable, I don't think they're going to die either. This is mainly due to the fact that each of them still have a) potential for growth and b) are relatively new. The antagonistic ones are probably a 50/50 chance of survival, due to the hole that having the eldrazi and bolas biggest plans disappearing from the storyline leaving room for new big bads.

However, Ugin, Chandra, Nissa and Gideon (as well as the obvious Liliana and Dack) all seem like fair game for death, mainly because the majority of their plots seem to have finished. I say the majority because it seems like at least Liliana and Gideon both have some way they could end up staying alive and some mysteries left (like the Raven Man, The Gods and others). Similarly, Ajani, Jaya and Teferi seem to be reaching their end.

On the villains side, I'm guessing Tibalt, Dovin, Tezzeret and Ral are probably going to die. All of them don't really have much story left to tell, and each of them are easy to kill. Kaya and Vraska both have potential to become interesting antiheroes or rather neutral characters, while Ob and Ashiok seem like interesting big bads for future sets. Also, Nicol Bolas is probably going to be retired, with the finale of his big plot being thwarted. But more than likely, he'll just go back to the drawing board.

  1. Jace - I think Jace is going to make it out of this alive, but his role in future sets will be diminished. There's some good story elements of dealing with his guilt at not doing his job as the Living Guildpact, and the destruction his negligence brought. It's also Jace, so he might just have his memory erased. Again.

  2. Gideon - Gideon would be an easy character to kill off. His character dying to save others would be a fittingly cliche end for our most boring Gatewatch member. If he survives, I would be interested to see him becoming corrupted by the Blackblade--Wizards is clearly incapable of making his character interesting, perhaps black magic plot device can succeed where lazy writing has failed.

  3. Chandra - Her coming to terms with her emotions and learning to control them in Dominaria closes out the main arc Wizards has been doing with her character development, so she is probably another good candidate for death. Jaya Ballard, however, might die to save Chandra, passing the figurative torch of "generic red pyromancer."

  4. Nissa - Nissa is a character who used to be interesting--a hero with an incredibly bigoted streak--who was retconned to be a more traditional hero. When she quit the Gatewatch, there was some good potential for her to go back to the "Zendikar First" viewpoint that once defined her character. I hope she does not die, so we can explore this side of Nissa more.

  5. Liliana - I think Liliana is going to survive, despite what the trailer might indicate. First, I don't think Wizards is going to spoil a major character death in the trailer. However, more importantly, Liliana has a whole lot of plot lines left to resolve such as with Garruk (who is confirmed not to be on Ravnica) and the Raven Man. Her future potential is far more than any other member of the Gatewatch, and she's one of the few Black characters that is "good"--something Wizards is generally lacking in.

  6. Karn - Karn has unfinished business with Phyrexia, so he has pretty strong plot armour.

  7. Teferi - Teferi is a great character with plenty of nostalgia value. He also is working on a way to retrieve his homeland, so I do not expect his death so long as that issue is outstanding.

  8. Nicol Bolas - I think he is going to be defeated. Whether he dies or not is irrelevant--Wizards will eventually bring him back in either case, though it might be years hence.

  9. Ugin - Ugin has already been killed off before, so I am inclined to think he will not this time, and will go off to do his own thing.

  10. Tezzeret - I think Tezzeret is on Amonkhet, and will somehow escape whatever befalls Ravnica. This would explain why he did not get a stained glass picture, and why he is the box promo, not in packs.

  11. Samut - Samut is very tied to Amonkhet, and I think doesn't provide much utility outside of the Eternal's story. Based on flavour text for Samut's Sprint, I expect she will face an Eternal of one of Amonkhet's gods; dying to kill such a being would be a fitting end.

  12. The Wanderer - The glimpses we got at this character indicate she's going to be too unique to be introduced and killed in the same set.

  13. Teyo Verada - the Amazon.com description of the War of the Spark novel indicates he will be the novels main character. I expect this means he will survive.

  14. Sorin Markov and Nahiri have lots of unfinished business with one another, and I suspect they will survive so we can have future sets dealing with them.

  15. Domri Rade, Ral Zarek, Tibalt, Angrath, Arlinn Kord, Huatli, and Saheeli Rai all seem fairly disposable, so I expect a couple of these to die.

Otherwise, I think there are even odds on the others, or that there is not enough information to provide a worthwhile evaluation.

_Delta_ says... #7

Can't elaborate on all of them, but here are my thoughts.

Jace - Will live because as already said he's the face of magic, with all of the character development in Ixalan I think there will be more stories with Jace, and maybe he will play a lesser role like cdkime has said and maybe return to his homeplan of vryn for a while.

Gideon - This one i'm not entirely sure on for one way or another, there was of course the prophecy made by Hazoret previously which immediately makes you think he's going to return to Theros and possibly meet his end against Erebos or maybe even Heliod like Elspeth had. Of course he could die here now too vs Bolas but i'm not really again sure what to think. If he lives I would appreciate even a change to his character a bit, he's always been depicted as a mono walker and many of his cards are a similar iteration.

Chandra - Will live, (as it's known she's in a future story) but I think so at the expense of Jaya. As depicted in Dovin's Veto she clearly gets in a fight during all of this, I imagine somewhat recklessly. I could see her returning to Kaladesh afterwards to be with her mother and perhaps avoiding Regatha mostly due to guilt over Jaya's death which might have been due to her actions.

Dovin - I think Dovin will meet his end here, whether by Chandra and or Jaya or even Bolas (who knows, maybe Bolas will begin to treat all of them as expendable for his plan and have his Eternals turn on those loyal to him also)? I believe there was also something about him interfering and foiling Niv-Mizzet's plans to become the living guildpact also instead of Jace, making him possibly an enemy. Either way, I don't think he will make it through this, and unless i'm mistaken there doesn't seem to be that much more of a role for his character to play ever since his working with Tezzeret on Kaladesh.

Tezzeret - Speaking of which, I think unlike Dovin, Tezzeret will live here. Now again I could be wrong, maybe Jace, Liliana or some other of the gatewatch might finish what they had started with him on Kaladesh. Or Bolas might finally see little use for his continued service and strike him down. But more likely, I see him escaping from this and living to perhaps play a part in the next return to New Phyrexia. Maybe he sides with the phyrexians or something and tries to perhaps seize power for himself?

Liliana - Will most likely live, either by use of The Chain Veil , perhaps The Raven Man (that is if he's even exactly on her side) will save her or maybe even Teferi? I feel she still has a role to play, and like Jace, Liliana is a fairly iconic planeswalker in magic and especially well represents . There are still questions about The Chain Veil , Garruk, and who the Raven man is that should be resolved.

Nicol Bolas - He's either going to be killed off by a combination of the gatewatch + Ugin, maybe even this new planeswalker Teyo Verada may have a role? It might however mean the death of Ugin I feel as well, with the expanded story that we got in Core 2019, we learned about the two elder-dragons early beginnings and I feel with them both coming into the world at the same time that they will also leave it together in death. The only thing against this, is how iconic of a villain he is within Magic, there's Nicol Bolas / Phyrexians that stand out as the largest threats. He is a popular villain that has been around for a long time, and they could very well pull another situation like they had with Emrakul again in some fashion with Bolas suffering a massive defeat rather than death, by way of some imprisonment. This could very well too just be some major defeat rather than death (although still quite possible), that might result in his escape to somewhere's unknown to recover and begin to plan revenge. Afterall, Bolas hasn't let even as much as death stop him previously.

Ugin - I think he's either going to die alongside Nicol Bolas, or after Bolas's death / defeat, I think he's going to disappear for a while. He might return to the Meditation Realm or simply continue to wander the multiverse.

Karn - Will certainly live, there's bound to be a return to New Phyrexia and Karn himself has stated his intentions with the plane.

Ajani - Will live as we know he's already to be featured in I believe it was some upcoming comic alongside Chandra and Tibalt.

Teferi - We went a while without hearing anything about him, but now with his return in Dominaria I believe his character has been a popular one, and so I don't think we will see anything much happening to him.

As for the rest not mentioned, I think Domri, Ral, Arlinn, Huatli, Samut, Saheeli, angrath are all expendable. I expect Sorin and Nahiri to live as they have a score to settle certainly, Ob nixlis and Ashiok have room for more development as villians especially in the absence of Bolas, the wanderer and Teyo are both new (with one being a significant character in the upcoming novel) so they are safe, Tibalt is safe because he's known to be in a future story, and likewise Davriel and the two new walkers created for the Chinese market (whose name's escape me atm) I think are safe.

Last_Laugh says... #8

I wouldn't be surprised if they kill off all the walkers here just to get rid of the card type going forward (for a year or 2) and focus on non-walkers for story purposes for awhile.

WotC has expressed concerns before that they felt planeswalkers had ran their available design space already. This feels like a 'leave us the fuck alone, we went out with a bang!'

Boza says... #9

The only ones I do not wish to die is Ashiok and Bolas. For me, anyone else can be a casualty.

Planeswalkers I expect to die:

  • Gideon
  • Nissa
  • Vivien
  • Samut
  • Domri Rade
  • Ral Zarek
  • Jaya
  • Kiora
  • Arlinn Kord
  • Huatli
  • Saheeli Rai
  • Ugin (only if Bolas dies too)
  • Vraska
  • Kaya
  • Dovin

15/36 would be a nice culling. I feel the rest have enough plot armor to survive.

Icbrgr says... #10

I think ill start off with saying that I personally have an appreciation for authors/directors to make gutsy and definitive calls and following through with killing off characters for good.... fake deaths/resurrections/time reversal/inconsequential parallel universe nonsense are almost always annoying to me/the reason why I lose interest in a series.... like in comics believing that the Red skull or Dr. doom were killed off for the 900th time just to later on read it was actually a clone/robot.... or when superman died via doomsday... and the magical Resurrection that followed....the same can be said with any kind of story arch/TV Series; there is cootos to be given when a story/series can be concluded/finished and not perpetually draged it out.

After the trailer at this point i think id be disappointing if Liliana survives despite how much I like her and valid reasons to keep her around... I just think that it would be a terrific send off to a major character and i just dont like the idea of Wizards playing with my emotions with a death psyche out like that lol.

I also feel the same about Bolas. He is a terrific embodiment of a MTG Supervillian/antagonist... but i think at this point he could be killed off with certainly leaving his mark.... id hate for him to lose and only for him to come backl years later for the new "Gate watch" to say "how many times do we need to teach you this lesson old man!?!?".... there is a whole lotta mutiverse out there for a new threat to emrge out of not to mention how many unresolved threats we know are still lurking.

So, I was going to comment with every character and how I want them to die, if they die, ideally, but that was WAAAAAY too long, so. Idk. Boza, Icbrgr, I, too, admire the balls to kill someone off- especially a significant character. I think stories thrive on change.

The characters I want to die are as follows: Gideon (depending on how they kill him), Nissa, Tibalt (preferably in the most humiliating possible way), Teyo Verada, Bolas, Kiora, Nahiri, Samut, Jaya, Dovin, Huatli, Sarkhan?, and Ugin.

_Delta_ says... #13

dbpunk ajani will also be in that comic.

Its interesting that Sorin has escaped his prison, this might seem a bit farfetched but I believe it might have been Ob Nixilis that freed him (If Ugin hadn't) so that they both could have revenge against Nahiri. He has a grudge against Nahiri afterall since she weakened him with a hedron previously making him lose his wings and most of his remaining power and he's stuck on Zendikar unable to planeswalk for centuries. Either Sorin or Nahiri might be a casualty in this set I suspect and I'm leaning towards Nahiri. I'm not sure if this is any indication whatsoever, but look at the fact that Sorin's planeswalker card is a rare while Nahiri being at a lower uncommon rarity. It might mean nothing related entirely, but regardless it's interesting.

April 3, 2019 3:25 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #14

Most of the planeswalkers in this set have been introduced only recently, or otherwise are not major characters in the story, meaning that the players have had barely any time to become familiar with them, and thus, their deaths would not have a significant impact on the story, so I doubt that any of them shall die.

Jace both is too popular and also has not yet returned to his home plane, and there is no way that WotC shall not have a block on Vryn, at some point so I believe that he is safe.

Chandra has no significant unresolved plot lines, so she is in danger of dying, although her popularity may possibly save her.

Nissa and Nahiri could both be central characters in a third Zendikar block (which will not be happening at any time soon, but is likely to happen, at some point, due to that plane’s popularity), so I doubt that they shall die.

Sorin could be a central character in a potential third Innistrad block, so I feel that he is safe.

Ajani still has unfinished business on Theros, so I feel that he is safe.

Dovin is the secondary antagonist of this story, after Bolas, so it is very possible that he may die, unless WotC wishes for him to be a recurring antagonist.

Dack and Ral have no significant unresolved plot lines, but I do hope that WotC expands upon Dack entering Nyx, the underworld of Theros, at some point.

Teferi and Jaya have been around for a long time, so I feel that WotC may choose to bring a conclusion to their story arcs in this thread.

Karn’s situation is similar to that of Jaya and Teferi, but WotC has not yet followed up on the plot hook of him potentially infecting other planes, and New Phyrexia still exists, so I feel that he shall not die in this set.

Tezzeret despises working for Bolas, and he now controls the planar bridge, which just happens to be what Phryexia needs to invade other planes, so I feel that WotC may be planning for Tezzeret to become the new father of the machines, as were Yawgmoth and Karn, before him.

Sarkhan’s story seemed to reach a satisfying conclusion in the Tarkir block, but he would be a central character in a return to that plane, so he is equally likely to either live or die.

Vraska will definitely regain her memories of the time that she spent with Jace on Ixalan, so I suspect that she may turn against Bolas at a crucial moment, distracting him so that the others can strike a decision blow against him, possibly sacrificing her own life in the process.

Gideon, as one of the main protagonists of this story, could very well die, and it would be a dramatically-appropriate way to bring a conclusion to his story, but he has unfinished business on Theros with Heliod and Erebos, so I believe that he cannot die until he has returned to his home plane.

Liliana has killed all the demons with whom she made a contract, and she is worried about excessive use of the Chain Veil having a detrimental effect upon her, so I feel that it would be very dramatic for her to use the Chain Veil to strike a potentially fatal blow against Bolas, sacrificing her own life in the process, but she does still have unfinished business with Garruk, and the Raven Man is still very mysterious.

Ugin is equally likely to either live or die; on one hand, him and Bolas dying together would be very poetic and dramatic, but, on the other hand, there is still much about him that is unknown, and he is not exactly a shining beacon of morality compared to Bolas, so I wonder if WotC has further plans for him.

Bolas has been a major antagonist in the story for many years and many sets, so, eventually, his time in the story shall have to come to an end, but WotC may not wish to permanently kill off a popular villain, but they also likely do not wish for this game to become akin to Marvel and DC comics, in which character rarely ever remain permanently dead.

April 3, 2019 8:42 p.m.

Boza says... #15

I have to say, the answer to the question of who will die is heavily dpeendant on another one - which side will win? I think the most likely outcome is Bolas dead for good, the gatewatch loses half of its members and is disbanded, along with a number of side characters.

On another note, the card depicting Sorin and Nahiri story-wise, Single Combat has been just spoiled - will even one of them die in this fight?

April 4, 2019 4:51 a.m.

ShutUpMokuba says... #16

i'm not sure bolas will die.. WoTC will make a lot of money out of this set.. i think they'll save for the future at least the possibility for an "Endgame" set in which he actually dies.

OT about who dies in my opinion: Most of the PW sided with bolas will die. One between Tezzeret and Dovin Baan. Domri and Kaya are likely to die since they are probably going to turn on bolas when they realized what is actally going to happen. Sadly i think Vraska is going to die, maybe just to make Jace really angry or just to save him from death. Liliana i think that she either dies for real just to be revived in a following set or she is saved with some time shenanigan from teferi, artifact shenanigan from karn, old dragon vague shenanigan from Ugin.

About the good guys: Jaya is going to die just to piss off Chandra a lot. Chandra and Ajani survive for sure as we already know. Jace is safe. Probably Gideon is going to die but i think he could have a similar fate as liliana (going to die and saved or die for real just to come back soon). Nissa is probably safe. Karn i think he's safe. Teferi is probably going to sacrifice himself to pull off some kind of time tricks to save everyone's ass. If Bolas dies, Ugin will die too. I mean he's technically a spirit however i think he's going to sacrifice himself.

April 4, 2019 11:20 p.m.

ZendikariWol says... #20

Umm. What unfinished business, DemonDragonJ? Revenge? You’ll find revenge doesn’t always come in the most exact of ways. I think that Gideon would come to realize that every live he saved, every mortal he kept from death a moment longer was his revenge against Erebos.

April 4, 2019 11:57 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #21

ThoAlmighty, ZendikariWol, first, he has business with Erebos for killing his friends and Heliod for not preventing their deaths.

Second, it is an essential part of the archetype of the hero's journey for the hero to return to their home at least once, to show how much they have grown and developed, which has been done so often that it is easier to list the heroes who have not returned to their homes, who likely are very few in number.

Third, this is mainly my personal preference but Gideon and Elspeth have never met, and I feel that they would be a great couple.

April 6, 2019 1:05 a.m.

ZendikariWol says... #22

Actually, DemonDragonJ,

1) I think it would be very fulfilling for Gideon to come to understand that, as I’ve stated above, every life saved is revenge against Erebos. Every second that he delayed a mortal’s death is Gideon’s vengeance.

2) Why bind yourself to tropes, no matter how useful they may be? A character does not need to return home to have been developed, and in Gideon’s case, there’s been little development anyway. He basically just became an adult.

3) I think Elspeth is much too old for Gideon, and he and Tazri also had sort of a thing back on Zendikar.

April 6, 2019 3:13 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #23

ZendikariWol, I will concede your first point, but I still think that it would be interesting to see how Gideon would perceive his home, since has never returned there, as far as I know.

Also, how could you know Elspeth's age? All the artwork that depicts her makes her look to be somewhere in her twenties, or possibly thirties, and Gideon seems to be in that same range.

Also, this will change the subject, but do you expect that Jace shall return to his home plane, eventually? Given that Chandra did, I doubt that WotC would miss such a great opportunity.

In the new card spoiled "Finale of Eternity" looks like Liliana is destroying that Gem/Rock (whatever it is).

Prison Realm suggests Bolas won't die, he'll just be trapped in his Meditation Realm.

Prison Realm

Enchantment

When Prison Realm enters the battlefield, exile target creature or planeswalker an opponent control until Prison Realm leaves the battlefield.

When Prison Realm enters the battlefield, scry 1.

Ft: After millenia to craft victory, Bolas had eternity to contemplate defeat.

So, the question is,

Do you guys think the Wizards team would do us all a big bamboozle? Do you think that Bolas may get trapped and be like PSYCH bitches guess who's back?

My take is... not for a while. With Emrakul and now Bolas, I'm a little annoyed with Wizards taking huge cats out of the bag, only to stuff them in a rubbermaid to reheat later.

ZendikariWol Well that's because they know that if they make another set like "The return of Bolas" they will make a lot of money. Always better to keep them alive so they can show up whenever you need. They could also make Bolas return as an ally/anti-hero in the future to fight an even bigger threat (like Aizen in Bleach in the final arc).

How would you defeat an age-old dragon who was already one of the most powerful beings of all time and has absorbed hundreds of sparks towards his elder spell? Stab him a couple of times? We know that didn’t work for Gideon.

Speaking of Gideon my ‘guess’ that he dies has pretty much been confirmed (leak). Gideon’s Sacrifice

So, Gideon sacrifices himself to save liliana, she breaks bolas' gem/stone and he gets trapped in the Meditation, now Prison, realm?

Plot twist: Gideons immortal soul is sucked back to the theros underworld where he and Atheros square up, and he comes back W/B with the sword somehow?... who knows.

Hey wait, you've raised a fascinating question Mj3913! Are the souls in Theros' underworld the ones who were born in Theros? Anyone who's visited? The ones who've died there?

Well we know Elspeth is there, and she died in Nyx. Not sure where that fits in though.
