Kiora, the Crashing Wave has been spoiled! We finally have Kiora as a planeswalker! :D

2GU

+1: Until your next turn, prevent all damage that would be dealt to and dealt by target permanent an opponent controls.
-1: Draw a card. You may play an additional land this turn.
-5: You get an emblem with "At the beginning of your end step, put a 9/9 blue Kraken creature token onto the battlefield."

I like her. Her +1 isn't flashy or anything but that -1 is nice. Draw a card then play another land. Her ultimate is hilarious! Put a 9/9 Kraken onto the battlefield during your end step? Yay free blocker!

We have a new forum for spoilers. This should be moved. Also this is like the 100th thread on Kiora.

She will see play, if some kind of Turbofog deck assembles in Standard. Since I've no clue about modern or expensive formats, I'll shut up about those.

In any case, bonkers in EDH. Play a land AND draw a card?

Maybe she's playable in Ana or Bant? She dies fairly easy, that's the problem. I highly doubt her having as much of an impact as Xenagos or Domri did.

@ChiefBell: I saw both after the fact. I was just waking up and got excited.

Your forgetting her +1 saves her. Helps u ignore big things like Desecration Demon or Blood Baron of Vizkopa she can also be given hexproof from Simic Charm and her -1 allows for crazy mana ramp. -5 basic says RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!!! She will see standard easily

Simic Charm doesn't save her since to Lightning Strike a Planeswalker you target the player and redirect the damage to the 'Walker which doesn't require targeting anything except the player.

She has some great abilities but I see her as too fragile to make much of a difference in any format.

treevore, Her +1 does not save her. It only prevents one creature from doing any damage.

I find it funny, that no one has realized she can target Puphorous even when he doesn't have enough devotion, and that it can't deal damage when a creature enters the battlefield. She can stop Blood Baron, Boros Reckoner , Master of Cruelties , and other nasty stuff you don't want to deter you.

And by that you mean she can stop one Blood Baron, Reckoner, Master of Cruelties etc.

One is better than none right?

ChiefBell says... #12

Yes, but when you consider that you've paid 4 mana for it, it seems like a bad deal.

T4 cast Kiora, +1 her to 3 loyalties, pass turn.

opponent cast's Lightning Strike targeting kiora at the players end step.

alternative;

T4 cast kiora, -1 draw a card, play an additional land, kiora at 1 lotalty, pass turn.

Opponent sends a 1/1 at kiora, she dies.

She's definately not the same value as Jace, Architect of Thought or even Xenagos, The Reveler but at least we got her.

Yeh, I've been saying she's just bad for a while.

Based on my little breakdown, I see kiora topping off at $20 and anything over that is pure hype raising her price, I'd much prefer to see her in the Gideon, Champion of Justice /Vraska the Unseen price range, under ~$10 seems realistic.

December 26, 2013 4:22 p.m.

It's funny how people think Kiora will protect them from Desecration Demon and Blood Baron of Vizkopa . Very rarely do I, as an Orzhov player, have only one threat on the field. This card is greatly overrated. I doubt anyone who goes to Top 8 of Pro Tour will be playing this card.

Standard is boring and she's not boring enough for it. We got it.

Any opinions about other formats? Preferably EDH?

Great in EDH. She'll be so amazing in EDH. Endlessly breakable.

Seems great in EDH, as has been said

December 26, 2013 9:03 p.m.

Any thoughts on a possible play of Simic Charm main deck to protect your Kiora?

December 27, 2013 10:27 a.m.

Gidgetimer says... #21

Again doesn't work. To Lightning Strike a Planeswalker you target the player and redirect the damage to the 'Walker which doesn't require ever targeting Kiora.

December 27, 2013 10:36 a.m.

Whoohoo! A simic planeswalker! My prayers have been heard! And it's a sexy... um... kraken... thing... oh, well, it's blue and green, so whatever!

The abilities are very versatile, so it can fit in any simic deck. It's green so it can make use of the counter-doubling effects from cards like Doubling Season and blue opens the way for loads of searching and proliferate artifact decks. It fogs, it draws, it ramps... And it releases the kraken!

I think I've got a new favorite.

The first ability would be cooler if it could target my permanents too..
