If you want to talk about Wolves and Werewolves in Standard, you're in the right place!
If you're looking for other formats, please drop by Werewolf EDH for Commander or Modern Wolves for Modern.
- You're 100% welcome to post here asking for help on anything Wolven, though you may want to set up a separate thread as well, in the Standard Deck Help forum.
- Please don't hesitate to post your deck in large format (it makes it easier for others to find the decks that are asking for help).
- Here's the syntax for a large format deck ... just copy-and-paste, replacing the "gruul-wolves-soi" part with the "slug name" from your deck's URL:

All,
In case you didn't see it, SaffronOlive went 4-1 with a new Werewolves brew, over at MTGgoldfish. Deck tech and videos are here.
Also, have you seen the spoiler for Metallic Mimic? Looks like AER has at least one new tool for Wolves!

I'm trying to decide whether to to replace Voltaic Brawler with Thalia's Lieutenant or stick with werewolves and wait for Metallic Mimic. I hope my fellow werewolf-enthusiasts can help me out!
January 5, 2017 12:59 p.m.
VeggiesaurusRex I think Metallic Mimic is going to be great for werewolves and might be worth waiting for.
I think Aether Revolt is going to give a lot of important cards that might give werewolves enough to finally have a place.
- Shock should not be ignored.
- Rishkar's Expertise great in the late game for werewolves.
- Hope of Girapur potentially super powerful in some matchups.
- Heroic Action possible as a replacement for Blossoming Defense
January 5, 2017 3:42 p.m.
VeggiesaurusRex: Metallic Mimic will be amazing for werewolves. If you replaced the brawler with Thalia's Lieutenant, you would be going into 3 colors, which would slow your deck down and make your deck slower, which isn't what werewolves want. Also, the lieutenant doesn't work if your wolves are transformed.
Vandyel: Rishkar's Expertise will draw a good amount of cards for werewolves, but keep in mind that if you cast a card through it, you will be flipping your werewolves to their day side.

Hello everyone! I have been following this thread basically since its creation but have never posted to it. I have been playing wolves in standard since their return in Shadows. I have won a few FNMS and also got close to winning the last game day. When I get a chance I will post my current deck list since it is much different than most of the wolf lists I have seen thus far. I am stoked on being apart of the chat I usually go 3-1 every week with my pups!

Hey guys!!!
Last FNM, I placed 2nd with my deck Werewolves, the rounds were:
2-1 vs aristocrat BG: easy first matchup, second he threw 2 Zulaport Cutthroat and third he started only with a land.
2-0 vs grixis control: first turn with a Village Messenger Flip did all the job.
2-1 vs esper control: hard matchup, first dovin baan controlled my only creature, then he threw sorin... GG. Second with only a land, my oponent flooded and a Kessig Prowler Flip did the rest. Third matchup, 3 lands, 3 creatures, vs a late deck: surely a win.
2-1 vs izzet dynavolt: first I couldn't start aggro, he threw 2 dynavolt tower, gg. Second matchup started with 2 Village Messenger Flip, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, easy matchup. Third matchup he did mulligan to 5, I started only with one creature, one spell and 5 lands. my only creature did all the job, while every turn he drew creatures he couldn't counter.
Not bad at all, first place got a 2-0 over me, so the deck looks pretty well, surely it needs improvements, though.
PD: Shock is the MVP card.
Greetings!

Hey thanks for the interest. As horrible as this sounds after making the comment I tore apart my deck for AER, traded cards away and I am not happy at all with the current were wolf brew I have going on. The past two weeks I have gone 0-4 with my new build so I desperately want to change that before posting a list! Hopefully within a week or two! Also if you want to check this out it is from last Wednesday night. I play round one on the stream. As you can see the deck is not running at all how I want it to! Enjoy all the wolf foils! Okay, and? People are not so overly sensitive that they'd have an existential crisis over someone using a pronoun in a positive and innocent comment. I politely request that you not try and force everyone who passes through this thread to adopt your own personal vernacular. As for me, I'm going to continue using widely accepted terms and not be offended by whatever name people reference me by.
That aside, I just realized that the uh... Oh what do you call it. The red/white aftermath card that doubles power and then gives double strike? Yeah, that'd be pretty good with Mirrorwing Dragon and Silverfur. It's too bad that Fling doesn't work with the dragon. I've brewed a fairly effective modern variant of the card for casual multiplayer games. It fairly consistently combos off by turn 4-6 for anywhere between 200 and 700 damage... It feels soooooo good.

DarkStarStormThe card you're thinking of is Onward to Victory.
An alternative to Uncaged Fury.
I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but another Aftermath card that looks interesting is Insult to Injury. It doesn't trigger Silverfur though.

but I am having trouble especially against zombies and some of the newer vehicle/artifact decks. I was wondering if anyone might be able to help some. Love wolves/werewolves and hope they keep making more.
May 19, 2017 3:42 p.m.
I would cut the Plummets in favor of additional copies of Moonlight Hunt. They both do the same thing, but Moonlight Hunt is far more versatile in its usage.
EDIT: So, I've been looking at Moonlight Hunt and noticed something INSANE about it. First of all, it procs lifelink, which is something you should probably think about including in the deck. Secondly, if cast in the combat step, IT PROCS TRAMPLE!!
Also, your mana curve is EXTREMELY low. Shaving off some copies of Kessig Prowler Flip for something in the four mana slot might help a bit.
Claypurse: Well, it's a good thing that I'm including everyone with my word choice, now isn't it?
May 20, 2017 1:15 p.m.
DarkStarStorm thank you for the advice. I will consider it.

You're running a lot of awkward three of cards. It's almost as if you're a bit scared to make changes to a deck, and so you're shaving off copies. For example, why are you running three copies of Moonlight Hunt and two of Rabid Bite? Hunt is STRICTLY better than Bite, in every way imaginable. Don't be afraid to drastically change the deck. You can always change it back, so don't shave copies because you're worried about "ruining" it.
Haze of Pollen: It doesn't necessarily do much. Most opponents won't commit everything to swing because of combat tricks, so this will most likely be less optimal than a simple removal spell. If Vehicles are the issue, then you can actually mainboard Dissenter's Deliverance, which is very easy to cycle away in an irrelevant scenario.
Kessig Prowler Flip: I don't think it belongs in the deck...at all. Your early game is fine, but the lategame of this deck is fairly weak. Cut this ENTIRELY in favor of the likes of Breakneck Rider Flip, Geier Reach Bandit Flip, or sideboard Hermit of the Natterknolls Flip/Silverfur Partisan (against control). In other words, there are better werewolves that do better things that will make your deck better in the lategame. Finally, I'd like to encourage you to pick up at least 4 duel lands that aren't Evolving Wilds. Reveal lands or cycling lands will improve the deck greatly.

DarkStarStorm how would Moonlight Hunt proc trample?
May 21, 2017 6:27 p.m.
Very goo advice. Thank you DarkStarStorm. I have been playing for quite a while but my deck building skills are very poor you are right about that. The only reason for kessig prowler is because I do like being able to have something out and usable first or second turn and there isnt much. And are there any dual lands you would recommend? Some are hard for me to get as my budget is tight.
May 21, 2017 6:31 p.m.
I was mistaken on that note. I was under the impression that if cast during the damage phase, it is considered combat damage and thus Trample is considered. However, neither player receives priority during that phase and no abilities in the game proc to respond to. Therefor it cannot be done. IF one WERE able to cast it during the damage phase, which is currently impossible in MtG, it WOULD consider trample.
It still procs lifelink, which is hardly relevant considering the number of lifelink WOLVES.
Oh! I made an alteration to cyphre187's deck:
May 21, 2017 6:46 p.m.
I like the changes you made DarkStarStorm but as I do not have and cannot afford some of the more expensive cards, I can only play with what I have or what I have the credits for. Very restricting and a pain in the butt, but thats the way it is. I will see what I am able to get
May 21, 2017 7:03 p.m.
An explanation for my decisions on my variant of cyphre187's deck.
Breakneck Rider Flip: Having redundant copies is actually good, and it has immense synergy with Howlpack Resurgence. It can allow the mana curve to be lower because it scales with your board state.
Channeler Initiate: Not a wolf, but it helps your early game by functioning as a 0/1 mana dork as well as your lategame as a 3/4 body. Allows you to drop a body and still have mana for interaction.
Geier Reach Bandit Flip: Efficient card, but redundancy is not good. 2-of to prevent drawing into multiple.
Smoldering Werewolf: A meta-pick lategame bomb. 12 of Zombies's creatures have a toughness of 1, which opens you up for a 1-for-2 scenario.
Game Trail/Sheltered Thicket: Everything that isn't Trail has the land types to enable it entering untapped. In the mid/lategame, you can cycle away Thickets that would be topdecked otherwise.
Magma Spray: Answers Relentless Dead and Scrapheap Scrounger for good. It also enables psuedo first strike with Kessig Forgemaster Flip and Smoldering Werewolf
May 21, 2017 7:06 p.m.
Ok what anout using Ulvenwald Captive Flip for Channeler Initiate? Then I just need to work on game trail and another arlinn
