Imho chandras defeat is a pretty good card. But magma spray exiles so it would depend on your local meta seeing as there are many things that need to be exiled nowadays. Besides, most pummeler decks run at least 2 harnessed lightning's, many run 3 or more, which would take care of the glorybringer problem, as well as a host of other creatures and vehicles, flying or not. So chandras defeat would really only be for chandra. I dont think that it would be worth it. Unless your meta is overrun with her, which i highly doubt. I dont think is synergies well with this deck.

I found a pretty good sideboard guide for using Pummeler that is applicable to most of the current builds: http://www.mtgmintcard.com/articles/writers/soh-weng-heng/sideboard-guide-for-red-green-pummeler.
I also updated my deck list here Pummeler Smash with the cumulative sideboards from the more recent successful Pummeler builds. 21 decks in total, including a few of the Temur builds. It's interesting to see how often the different sideboard options show up.

Day 2 metagame results are out for PT HOU and it looks like 5x RG Pummeler, 2x BG Pummeler, and 1x Temur Pummeler decks are still in it!

Hey guys, check out the new Hashep Oasis green desert land. It can be sac'd to make it a pump spell. Really good in pummeler decks.

The.Preacher,
Not everyone on this thread is a guy. And sure, 'guys' is a gender-neutral term in many places, but it's certainly not everywhere. Thanks!
Also, thanks for pointing out Hashep Oasis ... I'd never even thought about it for Pummeler. It's REALLY expensive mana-wise of course, but I love the fact it doesn't take up a spell slot! Very interesting ...

I think I may use it in my pummeler deck. Good way to finish. Anyone using their pummeler deck in the upcoming Game Day?

Well done! I managed a third place finish with mine, lost my first match to WB Zombies, 2-1, because I didn't side in my Radiant Flames.
My best moment was a topdeck to win my final match against mono-red Eldrazi, drawing an Invigorated Rampage for my Pummeler with 12 energy and only 4 life left against my opponents board of Glorybringer, Thought-Knot Seer, Hanweir Garrison, and Chandra, Torch of Defiance.
I also traded my top-8 promo Adorned Pouncer away for the more useful promo of Abrade.

So, what does everyone think the impact of white having Tocatli Honor Guard and Solemnity will be on running RG Pummeler?

What are everyone's thoughts on updates to Pummeler now that Ixalan has been fully revealed? I didn't see much support for the Pummeler strategy, other than good removal in Lightning Strike.
I am dropping some creatures slots to increase my direct removal. Namely, -4 Longtusk Cub, +4 Lightning Strikes/Abrade. I'm also swapping two mainboard Larger Than Life for Rhonas the Indomitable.
Rootbound Crag appears to be a straight-forward swap into the spots vacated by Game Trail.
Would Woodweaver's Puzzleknot have enough value against the expected RDW aggro strategies to be worth a couple slots?

What about changing pummeler to have a transformative sideboard to make to the deck harded to deal with?
October 15, 2017 3:19 p.m.
djnewellmit says... #15
I've been thinking about the transformative idea. I had done something similar last year, where my deck would go to pure RG aggro by dropping the Pummelers and a few pump spells for Lathnu Hellion.
I don't think going straight RG aggro with a transform would confuse our opponent or allow us to really dodge any of their sideboard. I think going Temur with the Pummeler, and then transforming into a quasi-Temur Energy can give us a better chance of disrupting their game plan by giving us access to Negate and Essence Scatter. This also opens the possibility of throwing in some Trophy Mage into the mainboard to act as additional copies of Pummeler. I'm a little torn on Rogue Refiner at the moment, but I put a playset in the main for now; I may consider more copies of Trophy Mage, or going back up to 4x Voltaic Brawler.
I've updated my list and added the new sideboard if anyone cares to play around with it.

I was more suggesting going out of the Temur colors. I have been thinking about Naya Pummeler. This is this the deck I am currently brewing- NAYA Smash. I was working for the sideboard to be a swapout with maybe Solemnity in it to deal with the decks which will out value pummeler. So far the good cards I have found for this are: Huatli, Warrior Poet, Samut, Voice of Dissent and Rampaging Ferocidon. I am trying this because as Joke at FNM I was running Huatli, Warrior Poet and it allowed be to out value a Temur Energy deck. I think might work better than for the third color. Also who would expect a pummeler deck with maybe a hidden Approach of the Second Sun.
October 18, 2017 9:38 p.m.
Two Pummeler decks went 7-3 and 6-4 at Pro Tour Ixalan. The 7-3 deck was G/U and ran Rogue Refiner instead of Voltaic Brawler, a playset of Larger than Life, 2 Dive Down, playset of Cartouche of Knowledge and a One with the Wind.
The 6-4 deck was Temur with Refiners instead of Brawlers, 1 Trophy Mage, a couple of Larger than Life, 3 Invigorated Rampage, 2 Fling, and 3 Cartouche of Knowledge.
I'm kinda digging the G/U version and might give that a try at FNM this week.

Here are the links to the decks nomaddog is describing:
Green-blue Pummeler by Patrick Dickmann, 7-3: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/817503#paper
Temur Pummeler by Aaron Baarich, 6-4: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/817541#paper
I was glad to see some Pummelers at the Pro Tour. I had assumed they had gone into hiding during the previous Ixalan events, and it looks like the brewed up some new Pummeler sauce with these. The sideboards have some very interesting choices.
Sorry I can't get my hyperlinks to work on this forum.

Also, here is another Pummeler deck from the Pro Tour, this one in Sultai colors (G/U/B). The deck tech video is pretty useful to see why certain cards are included, like his decision to run Glint-Sleeve Siphoner.

I'm gonna give the U/G Pummeler deck a go at FNM this week. There's something that makes me a bit giddy inside with giving cubs, hydras, and pummelers flying!
November 9, 2017 4:11 p.m.
I simply LOVE Pummeler and my deck is a multiple FNM winning deck here in New Zealand. I am planning to play it on 30th Dec in my local store champs, and have tweaked it slightly but am not trying to compete against the meta, just beat it. I run aggro energy in a total offense gameplan, which may be risky, but I love the whole risk/reward element.
I would love to hear everyones thoughts.

What version of pummeler has the best match up against control and temur energy?
December 27, 2017 10:39 a.m.
Agent_Fire This G/R has gone well against energy matchups, undefeated against G/U, Temur and Sultai. I put this down to speed I guess, as this deck does have the ability to Turn 4 kill, unimpeded on a nut hand. Against control G/R pummeler has struggled a little, which is why I have opted for Prowling Serpopard to ensure my creatures actually make it onto the battlefield. The only other tactic I use against control is speed, trying to get underneath them and hit as hard as I can, as quickly as I can. Hope this in some way helps.

So here we are, a couple of weeks after the banning of Attune with Aether and Rogue Refiner. I'm still wanting to run U/G Pummeler, but not quite sure how I want to run it. Here's some options to try to fill the holes left by the bans. Any thoughts on which route to go? Not really wanting to go back to R/G Pummeler, but that may be the best choice. Thanks for the feedback.
Empyreal Voyager - 2/3 flyer for the same cost as a Rogue Refiner, generates energy on combat damage.
Jadelight Ranger - 2/1 explore/explore. This can help you dig and smooth out land draws. Maybe the best replacement for Rogue Refiner, but price tag could be an issue.
Woodweaver's Puzzleknot - 4G cost to get 6 life and 6 energy, would be 2 Hydra or Pummeler activations.
Evolving Wilds - Allows you to fetch your land, but not gain energy.
Hadana's Climb - I kind of like this enchantment. Can pump up your Pummeler and then when it flips you can activiate for 1GU and give target creature +X/+X and flying until end of turn.

djnewellmit Chandra's Defeat is a great sideboard card. But like all sideboards, depends on your meta.

Pabs4444 I like your RG Pummeler and have a few pointers I'll put on the deck's page.
I am currently working on keeping the UG Pummeler alive and plan on taking it to a Monday night event. Maindeck Unsummon has been doing some serious work for me during play-testing over the last week.

Came across this UG Pummeler deck that went 5-0 on MTGO. Looks interesting, especially with Hadana's Climb. That's a card I'm wanting to test out.

Has anyone created a succesful Izzet pummeler list? I cannot recall ever seeing a Pummeler list without the inclusion of Green.
February 21, 2018 3:07 p.m.
Pabs4444,
There's never been a competitive Izzet Pummeler deck (or rather, there's never been one on MTGtop8).
A number of people here on TappedOut have tried though ... reaching out to some of these folks might be worthwhile.

Even though green Pummeler builds lost Attune with Aether, green still offers the best protection and pump spell for our little robot-who-could with Blossoming Defense. And Servant of the Conduit serves a triple purpose of putting a body out to soak up removal or chump block, ramp, and provide ETB energy.
But it is an interesting question that I had not given much thought to. I'll percolate on some brews and let you know what I come up with. Even off some quick brain-storming, Izzet energy is almost overwhelmed at the 3-drop slot. I think Whirler Virtuoso comes up as an instant must-include for almost any Izzet energy deck, and Saheeli Rai is looking to play with some constructs as well.

Here are two different deck types I was trying to work around.
The first is a typical-looking aggro Pummeler deck, Izzet Pummeler.
The second I tried to work into a Dynavolt Tower + Electrostatic Pummeler to see if they could exist in the same shell, Static Electricity, but I'm less thrilled with that version. You can see a lot of similar card choices, plus a bunch of options in the maybeboards. These lists are not in anyway refined, but my idea of what a U/R Pummeler build would look like.

UG Pummeler is still bashing away in competitive: 1st place at a PPTQ in England and 5-0 in an MTGO Competitive League.

So, I've tried to weather the storm and continue to play Pummeler, but I think it's time to hang 'em up. It's been a lot of fun over the last year or so.

Its due to Abrade, the banning of Attune with Aether, alongside the rise of Walking Ballista and Fanatical Firebrand.
April 26, 2018 8:51 a.m.
Yeah, Pummeler has never been good when Walking Ballista was popular, but it was always a reasonable meta call ... until we lost Attune with Aether. I haven't sleeved up The little Construct that could since the ban :_(
