Dealing with a non-CoCo meta..

Standard Deck Help forum

Everyone already knows how degenerate Collected Company has become; yada-yada.. So I decided to brew an "anti-CoCo" deck of sorts; a Mono-Black Eldrazi Midrange/Control..

It turns out this particular shop has an extra prize for those who win without Collected Company(!), which meant that I faced a very different competition, and I got my butt whooped.. In fact, the first two rounds were both technically mirror matches. The first one beat me with more aggressive draws, the second had all the time in the world due to me being screwed out of any mana symbol c-mana, both which were better tuned as well (naturally)..

The third round was against a 5-color Superfriends deck of all things! Misplays & bad draws led to a 1-2 against him as well.. I saw my only victory in forth against a Mardu Harmless Offering deck. I drew hands full of hand disruption, discarding his mass amounts of removal spells, before eventually trampling him over..

That was two weeks ago, since them I've made several adjustments including: adding pain lands, getting rid of Hedron Crawler & Remorseless Punishment, mainboarding Grasp of Darkness & another Languish, added card draw via Read the Bones, and sideboarding the set of Transgress the Mind... A lot of stuff..

I think it looks a lot better, what do you guys think? How well do you see this doing against Bant Company, and more importantly, how do you see it doing against the rest of the general (non-CoCo) meta? Both right now, and come eventual rotation..

I'm not exactly certain why you went mono-black. While the disruption black has is nice for dealing with CoCo - Hallowed Moonlight comes to mind as a way of dealing with Coco and it replaces itself. It might be decent enough to splash white for. It allows you access to Shambling Vent as well, not to mention Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim and Anguished Unmaking. Could be worth checking out.

This is my first leap back into Standard since Origins first came out, and I wanted this to be a deck that I can effectively use well into the next rotation. The talk about 'why Eldrazi?' In the deck description, but the main reason(s) I went mono-black is two-fold:

  1. I already had the original prints of Murder, Grasp of Darkness, & Ultimate Price. This allowed me to start from a point of reference, and to begin to learn all the options available to one color (and mana symbol c) in this particular format..

  2. I also didn't wanted to immediately jump into a more complex mana base (beyond mana symbol bmana symbol c) for cost, and the pain-lands are out come rotation & I can't be for certain how I would need to change my manabase. This way when the next sets come out, I will essentially only be adding to my deck..

Therefore I have been hesitant about splashes colors for rather specific purposes, particularly one that's going away come rotation! Although, that being said, you do make a decent argument to splash mana symbol w..

On another note; I was also considering whether or not it would be a good idea to drop Distended Mindbender in favor of Endbringer?
