Getting back into Standard..

Standard Deck Help forum

So I tricked myself into investing into some rotation-friendly cards, so I decided to build a straight-forward Mono-Black deck for winning promos & booster packs at FNM..

A couple of things to note..

  • I'm currently not interested in diluting the manabase with Deserts (unless you can present some ironclad reasons as to why I should)..

  • I'm looking to keep this Mono-Black for the sake of simplicity, and to keep the overall cost down..

Hi, just looked at your deck, and it looks really good! +1!

Here's some ideas I thought of when I looked at the deck.

1.) Add a play set of Ifnir Deadlands.

I know what you said above, but let me explain why. A lot of decks have many creatures with low toughness, this card can kill many things! Ahn-Crop Crasher, Relentless Dead, and almost 80% of the creatures running in Mardu Vehicles! Also, because it's a land, it can't be countered by any counterspell in standard, and is very good at avoiding removal!

The only problem with this land is that it sometimes struggles to find targets, it's good in some matchups, but can struggle with others. Otherwise in my personal opinion, I recommend adding a playset of this land in your deck.

2.) drop Filigree Familiar for Yahenni, Undying Partisan.

You have so much removal! In my opinion, take advantage of it! Yahenni has done a fantastic job with this task when I played him.

You remove all of your opponents creature and then all of a sudden when the dust settles, your opponent is staring down a huge creature.

So, Lets just say Yahenni is about a 5-5 or even bigger, your opponents will need to block to stay alive, this will only give Yahenni more counters, and more power to help you win.

I hope this helps! Good luck on the battlefield!

Disallow would like a word with you concerning the activated ability on that land

Nimble Obstructionist can also counter the ability on Ifnir Deadlands, although it's not as popular as Disallow.

So we've established that, indeed, the Deserts don't add any real value to my deck here.. Ku..

I'm also not sold on Yahenni yet either.. Because the Filigree Familiar grants value just for coming into play & dying.. It's an ideal chump blocker. It is also currently the only source of card draw too..

Is there anything to strengthen my deck overall? What about the sideboard?

I wouldn't discount Scavenger Grounds.

It is very good to use in response to someone Embalming or Eternalising a threat.

Putting two or three copies in the deck won't really "dilute" the mana base.
