I never played standard and i would like to know what deck would be good to pick up at the moment

And how do you get started in standards ? Planeswalker intro pack ? Booster box ? Fat pack (i think thats the name)?

The best value, always, is singles. Just buy all the singles for a deck type that you want that would work and bank your credit. Then buy more singles. With how cheap Amonkhet stuff is right now, it's a disservice to your bank account to chance booster packs and be underwater 3-3.5 dollars every time.

As far as deck type that would work, I think turbo fog is on the precipice of greatness. Specifically, the Aetherworks banning should have positioned it to be a cheap deck that can win.

What's turbo fog?

If you just want to play Standard casually, there's a lot of janky decks you can pic up for cheap. I recommend just brewing something yourself for $100-$150 that suits your playstyle.

Turbo Fog, in Standard, uses Haze of Pollen, Commencement of Festivities, Repel the Abominable, and Encircling Fissure in various ratios to prevent combat damage until you can ramp into Approach of the Second Sun.

Here is a list of the recent decks that are winning the Standard format. As far as what to buy - if you're looking for a bulk of cards to get started, the box or fatpack would be the best start. Not all good cards but it gives you something to work with. If you're looking for a deck, the Planeswalker decks are not very effective in a meta environment, but they're a standard legal deck set to go complete with a planeswalker, so it's not a bad start. Especially if you're just trying to understand the format.

No problem. I'd tell you to come to my store, buy from us, and learn from our regulars, but you probably don't live in Central Illinois. :P

I agree with the first poster - do NOT buy a box or a Bundle (formerly a Fat Pack).

It is poor value for money as you will have to shell out so much more money for a decent deck.

If you want to be competitive at FNM it can be quite expensive.

If you want to build your own deck it takes a LOT of time to get to know the meta, staples, etc. it could take you a couple of seasons before you start to build something decent.

You could start searching the top Standard decks on this site and see if any of them appeal to you. Read the match reports for them to see how effective they are, and if they will suit your play style.

Yes. Maybe not in tourneys, but any card with the same English-language name is legal in Standard.

I also vote that singles are way better than boxes, although sometimes drafting a set from boosters helps to find cool decks you'd like to play.

I opened a Tamiyo, Field Researcher is there a deck where she could be good ?

You can use cards in Standard tourneys that have the same English names as Standard legal cards.

Tourneys are any Wizard sanctioned events, such as FNM or PPTQs.

So you can use ANY copy of Negate in a Standard deck, even if it is a Chinese copy.

Thriller - great card. Bant control or Bant midrange/tempo would probably be the most viable archetypes.

ThrillingThriller,
I always point new Standard players towards the budget decks at the bottom of the MTGGoldfish meta page (even if budget is not a big issue for you, I always rec' starting with a cheap deck to learn the net and figure out what deck best fits your play-style). The best part about MTGgoldfish is they almost always have an article and gameplay videos of the decks, which are very helpful for figuring out which deck might be best for you.

One important thing about Standard that I don't think anyone else has mentioned: There's a new set coming out in mid-July (were in the middle of spolier season right now), so there will probably be some big changes to the meta. So a "top tier" deck right now may be total trash here in a few weeks. Also, there's a BIG rotation coming in September ... which will dramatically impact the useful playtime and cost of cards in those sets.

Finally, to answer your question about how to start in Standard, I recommend juat asking around your favoite LGS. I'm hopeful you'll be amazed at how many folks will offer solid advice and even lend you a deck for the evening.

Glhf in Standard!
