Green Black Removal

Standard Deck Help forum

I haven't played with black too much but I'm running elves this set. I was looking at some removal, mainly small stuff that effects their whole board. I don't seem to have a problem with the bigger stuff. I have some removal for it plus its not really run at our shop. My main issue is with tokens. I can remove them too, but it just feels like I'm wasting my removal on them when i do cause I'm only targeting one creature at a time. I tried Eyeblight Massacre but it seemed to expensive and Bile Blight is rotating soon. I was told there was a card perfect for the deck but the guy wouldn't tell me what it was. Any suggestions? Well, I know Infinite Obliteration is like a preemptive strike, but it might be better for the sideboard. Languish is good, but it would kill all of your elves, so not sure about that. I think the best route for Golgari elves would just be straight up aggro and control in the sideboard.

The control will be in the sideboard, yes. But I need token removal so Infinite Obliteration won't work. Maybe against the source of the tokens, but theres a lot of options to choose from there and not any that stand out other than Goblin Rabblemaster and the likes. Thats why i was leaning towards Bile Blight but with only a few months left for Theros block, I'll be back here so its only a temporary solution. The reason i really want to side in token removal is because its big in the shops i play in. Just last night 4 of the 5 decks i played were token decks...

The M15 will rotate along with the Theros block, so Rabblemasters will be gone too. I know Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is great against tokens because you could just -X for 0 and it would get rid of them all. It may be expensive, not only to cast but also to buy, but with all the ramp and low cost creature, you can hold them off and cast Ugin.

Ugin would be expensive though. The games normally end with in 5 turns so he's a little beyond that and I may not even get a chance to play him. And Rabblemaster was just an example. I could just as easily target Dragon Fodder and they'd just use Hordeling Outburst. The spells are too small to target individually so I'd rather aim for creatures. Maybe I should just use Bile Blight for now and see what comes out with Zendikar?

Bile Blight and Eyeblight Massacre are fine. Even though BB will be rotating soon, you should still play it. It's still a really good card. Use it while you can. I have been running Elves ever since I got my hands on Origins. It is a beast deck. I've tried 3 different versions of Elves and I've settled on this one: Fireball Elves

I am splashing white only for Harsh Sustenance. It provides everything you need. An instant speed fireball! It allows us to have 8 of those effects between Shaman of the Pack and it for the game finisher. Also, versus goblins and mono red, it provides us with lifegain. It also is just good for a removal spell on a gummed up board.

That might be the best idea. If you're only building decks without using every set possible that would help, it will be difficult because almost every deck that's competitive will run cards even though they know that they will rotate.

If you're running straight Elves Eyeblight Massacre is likely your best option for mass removal. Even if you don't kill them right off it weakens any opposition. Depending on your level of graveyard manipulation you could run Murderous Cut. Downfall/blight rotate in October so if you have them, use them. If you have to buy... go with newer.

Mj3913 Im not worried about buying BB, my shop does 25 cent commons/uncommons in standard. However Hero's Downfall only targets 1 creature along with Murderous Cut and I need mass removal. I tried Eyeblight Massacre but it seems a little slow which is where BB works better. UpperDeckerTaco Fireball Elves is r/g legacy? SirFowler I am using some from previous sets however I'm aiming for a good bit of synergy so theres not much earlier. I am running Elvish Mystic and Reclamation Sage

I think I realize what card he was talking about, Virulent Plague.

Apparently that dude has the same deck name as mine. You can find mine on the bottom of my page.

SirFowler Someone just commented on my deck with that and it seems perfect for it. The fact that its permanent makes it worth the extra mana, plus its not double black. UpperDeckerTaco it looks like a good build. I do like the addition of Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip but it does seem a little too spread out for me. Den Protector doesn't seem to contribute to the deck. He's good, but not much synergy. And my main removal is Gilt-Leaf Winnower and Gnarlroot Trapper for bigger creatures (Hence were Lilliana may help)
