Help with building a deck in standard?
Standard Deck Help forum

Currently, with cards that are in the standard rotation, I only own AFR cards, I own quite a lot right now, not every card and not 4 of each and every card, but a pretty good amount. My question is, has anyone come up with any decks that use ONLY cards from the AFR set? I've tried searching for some, but all the builds I find are using a mix of different sets. Thanks in advance. Is it even possible to have a decent or good deck using only 1 set?
legendofa thanks for the response, what you said makes sense and is helpful, I was mainly wanting to avoid spending a good chunk of money to fill in gaps for building a good deck, I may have to. Although I have no plan on playing competitively or in tournaments, mainly just to play against a friend, I do enjoy just owning fun decks, whether it's standard or not. I really enjoy tribal decks, I find them to be quite fun, like a Dino deck or a minotaur deck, as examples.

That being said, I do own 2 demilich and 2 of the vecna summon cards, I own 4 hands but no eyes, sadly.

If you're just playing against a friend, then go wild. Do whatever you want. Do you know what your friend's decks look like right now?
And while I'm at it, welcome to the site!

He uses a really annoying artifact deck, has a merfolk deck and if I remember right, a large gimmick of the artifact deck is just using elves to generate mana. I own a zombie deck, minotaur, dinosaur, werewolf and a blue mill deck. I haven't tested any deck against strangers in a card shop, so I have no idea just how good any are, but I think my zombie deck is just stupidly good.

And I should mention all of my decks are from people's decks I found on here. The dinosaur one is quite good, I think. A budget deck worth 20 bucks, in my case nearly 40 due to added optional cards the user had listed that seemed pretty good.

Sounds like a good selection.
See if your friend is open to a Set Constructed match or two, if you want to try something a little different. It looks like Eye of Vecna is relatively cheap right now, with a playset at about $2, if you want to go that direction.

I don't think he has purchased any cards in years. I'm giving him all the cards I have that I own more than 4 of, from AFR. I have a lot interest in a goblin tribal deck. Also dragon, gnoll (if even possible), I have 2x Volo, Guide to Monsters , I think building a deck around him seems interesting

Volo would be a lot of fun. There's only two Gnolls right now, but they both want big attacks, so that can be built. A couple of the AFR Goblins also have the pack tactics ability, so pack tactics might be viable.

I found a deck list someone was using in Magic Arena, I don't play arena, but it looked like a fun deck. 4 Battle Cry Goblin 2 Den of the Bugbear 4 Fireblade Charger 4 Goblin Javelineer 4 Hobgoblin Bandit Lord 2 You See a Pair of Goblins 4 Tin Street Cadet 4 Rally the Ranks 2 Goblin Trashmaster 3 Showdown of the Skalds 10 Mountain 3 Plains 4 Furycalm Snarl 4 Needleverge Pathway Flip 2 Embercleave 4 Conspicuous Snoop
Only problem is, the Tin Street Cadet is Arena only, been trying to get a substitute for it, was thinking 4 Hobgoblin Captain because I own 4 already, but not sure what could be viable, any advice?

Look up old modern goblin decks if you wanna try goblin tribal.

The most common way to do that is with Limited, where you basically build a deck on the fly with semi- to fully random cards. It's possible to build a Constructed deck using only a single set, but it will be relatively weak and inflexible. This would be more of a self-imposed challenge rather than anything intended to be competitive.
Since you specifically mention Standard, think about it this way. Everyone else is using cards from the last couple years. An AFR-only deck would use cards from only the last couple weeks. The loss of options, synergy, and flexibility would likely shut any single-set deck down in a competitive Standard.
On the other hand, you could get some people to build their own single-set deck, either AFR or something else of their choice, and have a Set Constructed challenge. If you're able to play in public areas, maybe suggest it as an Open Set Constructed tournament.
As for actually building the deck, the main themes and mechanics are venture and dice rolling. Dragon tribal based on Tiamat might also be possible, but the mana requirements would be completely unforgiving. One of these would be a good starting point. AFR in particular is heavily weighted to flavor over mechanics, so it might just come down to finding a good card or synergy, like Demilich + Sorcerer Class or the Vecna set, and building around that.
