How to Remain Relatively Competitive in a Meta dominated by a few decks

I have great fun brewing up different decks (tribals, pure homebrews, etc..) and playing them. I usually attempt to make them relatively competitive so that if i go to an LGS for FNM i win a few games and have legit shot at top 5 or so. I mainly play for fun and in the odd sod tourney - how do you effectively homebrew/budget build decks to remain competitive?
Make sure your deck does something, and does it powerfully. Also make sure either your deck does what it wants before your opponent's deck does what they want, or have the ability to answer what their deck does.

I playtest my decks over and over and over against the top decks, and tweak the Sideboard, until I am sure that I can beat them almost every time.
We're taking roughly fifty games per deck.
The community here is very good at giving suggestions for how to shore up any weaknesses in your deck.

Usually what I do (in Modern at least, just a bit different), make sure you have plans/cards that deal with all the top decks.
For example, if you are in blue, having some Negate and Card:Ceremonious Rejection helps against Marvel, or if you are in black, running Dispossess or Lay Bare the Heart goes a long way.
Having an unexpected angle helps too. Like the New Perspectives combo deck, it takes a route most people don't expect.
That's just my two cents though.
