I don't play Standard

Standard Deck Help forum

Hi there guys. I'm a Modern format kinda guy. I love the fast pace of it, but sometimes, you've gotta spice your life up a little!

At my local game store, I have a fair bit of store credit from FNM wins I have. I want to make a standard competitive deck with my store credit. I would say that the budget is around 200 dollars. I definitely don't want something that's going to be useless in the coming months when DoT rotates out.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)

Mono-White Humans isn't super expensive, it's competitive, and Thalia's Lieutenant and Always Watching (arguably the two most important cards for the deck) won't rotate until September of 2017. It's also fast-paced, which you say you like about Modern.

icehit6,
So do you have favorite colors or archetypes?

If you're just looking for a change of pace, you might check out GR Ramp ... it's a good mix of inexpensive yet competitive.

You might also check out some of the decks over on this thread.

TMBRLZ I think 200 dollars is a pretty good price fora competitive standard deck... Is it not? That's all I have in store credit. I'm not willing to spend real cash on a deck at the current moment.

icehit6,
It depends on what you mean by competitive.

Most Tier I decks are $500-750 now (which is much lower than last season when they all had tons of Fetch Lands).
There are a lot of great Tier II decks for $100-$200, and it's always super-satisfying when one of them takes down a $750 monster with good luck and tight play.

Bottom line: Periodic FNM winner or Game Day champion for $200? Sure. Top 8 in a tournament with Competitive REL? Not so much.

Oh well I never expected to make a Grand Prix deck for 200 dollars!! Definitely not, but a competitive FNM deck, yes. I've done my fair share of putting together Grand Prix ready decks. 600 dollars on elves and 550 on storm :| no more money! Just store credit.

And even with 550 dollars in my storm deck, it's not GP ready because I cant afford Scalding Tarn! That's the last four cards I need though.

icehit6,
OK cool. Plenty of good options then!

Here's a pretty good breakdown of the current Standard metagame from MTGgoldfish.

Do any of those decks interest you? Most have solid budget alternatives.

I also see you like Tribal ... really, the only SOI tribe that's particularly competitive at the moment is Humans. But Werewolves, Vampires, and Zombies all have their fans ... e.g., check out the Hall of Fame at the All things Wolven thread.

I saw the Werewolf Tribal deck, and that really peaked my interest. I'm just worried because I don't understand the standard metagame that I wouldnt be able to play it to it's full potential.

icehit6 there's really not one meta game for Standard.

Each local meta is its own entity.

After playing for a few weeks you will get a feel for yours.

I'm having great luck with a very competitive aggro ramp weenie deck in local tournaments.

It only costs $65-ish bucks and I've won games in 5 rounds. It moves fast.

UR gonna get overrun (standard prowess aggro)
