Limited Product Options. (standard budget deck help)

Standard Deck Help forum

Hey All,

I need some assistance with a deck build. So my town is having a small casual standard game night on Tuesday this week. The shop that I am near currently only has booster packs, theme decks and tool kits and some fat packs. What do you think is the best standard deck I can make out of the product they have? Can I fine tune a theme deck? Or maybe buy multiple copies to make it consistent? Thanks for any help.

Hey, what do you mean by theme decks?

Do you mean Planeswalker decks? Is there a big Planeswalker graphic on the outside of the box? Theme decks were discontinued in 2015. If what your shop has are Theme Decks then they're old cards, not Standard legal thus probably can't use them for your shop's Game Night. When I get better idea of what you mean by "theme decks" then I can further help you. Also make a list of all the "theme decks" your shop has to get a better idea of the options we have to work with. Some preconstructed (precon) decks are better than others.

If this is the only product you can use to make a deck then you're going to have to purchase at least one of these "theme decks" as a base for a 60 card deck because you can't make a complete deck with just boosters/fat packs without buying a lot of them and tool kits are terrible. A theme deck at least gives you a two color manabase to work with. Unfortunately due to the lack of options just to play in Game Night you're most likely going to have to spend some money to make a less than ideal deck :(

Yea they have planeswalker decks. I was thinking of buying a few copies of one deck and at least making it more consistent. Just trying to figure out what is the best one.

I do not have any direct experience with the Planeswalker decks themselves, but, looking at the card list and what I have heard others say, they are all relatively commensurate with one one another in terms of power. Doing a brief skim of them, I did not see one that screamed "this would be more powerful than the others if you combined two copies."

The problem you're going to run into is not just that the Planeswalker decks are not consistent--it's that they have some actively terrible cards in them. For example, all of the Planeswalkers themselves are unplayable, and each deck usually has two additional cards that are unplayable without that Planeswalker (a tutor and something which receives a bonus).

That said, it is probably the safest way to build a standard-legal deck using only the options you presented. If you buy packs, while you likely will receive a couple powerful cards worth building around, there's no guarantee you'll have enough cards in the bomb's colours to make a viable deck.

Good luck! Let us know which deck you choose, or, if you are having trouble choosing, which you want help deciding between.

Yea i was thinking the same thing. So I decided on 2 different decks. Gruul. I bought 1 domri deck and a theme booster. Made it way more consistent and low cost aggro. My other deck is Simic. Bout 2 jace ixalan decks and 2 simic theme boosters. Gunna be either merfolk aggro or adapt and +1 counter theme. Simic seems alot more fun and more interactive but i have 2 options for the tournament.
