Merfolk Opening Cards

Standard Deck Help forum

I have a GU Merfolk deck, GU Standard Merfolk and I've been running Mist-Cloaked Heralds as my starter and I'm wondering, now that I've got both 4 Kumena's Speakers and River Sneaks. For my deck, which card is the right choice for starting?

I would cut some of your higher costed non-merfolk like Overgrown Armasaur or Soul of the Rapids and play both. Merfolk decks like to flood the board with a lot of small creatures and pump them up.

Thanks for this. I was already planning to take out Overgrown Armasaur for some Shapers of Nature and I didn't consider doing this. Thanks.

For Soul of the Rapids, the only reason I'm keeping them in there is I don't have much flyer defence.

Thanks for the advice.

I would definitely advise more Deeproot Waters. My own Merfolk is more aggressive, but even if I was running more of the heavier, you cant go wrong with a Deeproot Waters with a River-Sneak and Deeproot Elite on the board.

Edit: Also I think you may have just a sliiiight bit more land than you need. No need to go as low as mine, but I think 23 would do that one fine. Just a suggestion :3

Hexaflexagon Why do you need flyer defence? You want to be the beatdown in most matches and what flyers are actually relevant in standard that your creature actually prevents rather than just trades with.

Kumena's Speaker is the way to go.

This is what I consider to be the best Merfolk build.

I've tested it hundreds of times, and it is very strong.
