Hey guys, here's my deck, which relies on milling as one of the ways to beat my opponent.

I want to know: am I better off with the two Startled Awake  Flips that I have in their now, or am I better off with either two Void Shatters or two Molten Vortex?

Basically, are my four Sphinx's Tutelage enough, or should I branch out into a little more control or even an option to whittle down my enemies forces with the extra land I get from us drawing a lot of extra cards?

TIA.

Hi!

Starting with the fact that this is a completely "for fun" kinda build and I've never tested it (since I'm pretty sure it would suffer a lot aggro stuff), I guess it's a nice starting point for the deck you're lookin' fore.

I don't own nor I will ever own Tarkir or Origins cards, so you may want to alter the list considering them in.

The thing is: get the best out of the enchantments, finish with Startled Awake and control the board with Jace and The Thing (which is there just to "terrorize" the oppo). xD

The wizard and the insane ability to generate clues should do the trick.I'd try a version with Fevered Visions, splashing Red for some nice old burn. xD

Cheers!

I love Fevered Visions and Sphinx's Tutelage together. I really do. What I would focus more on is card drawing instead of building clues or anything else, so Tormenting Voice and Magmatic Insight are cards I would think about. Another card to consider is Brain in a Jar. Why? Casting multiple spells in a turn for cheap, or casting sorceries as instants (such as the end of your opponent's turn). That is my suggestions.

Yea some things do combo, but I see a lot more internal conflict.

Startled Awake  Flip is a nice 13 mil but don't plan on reusing it after you cast it. Can only turn it into a creature at the time you could activate a sorcery.. meh. Talent of the Telepath is a way better card for this deck if anything.

Things to consider, Molten Vortex does not flip Thing in the Ice  Flip (TITI) and Void Shatter does, however, it depends on your opponent to cast a spell which is a slow way to flip TITI. I think you're going to be in for a surprise when you find out how often TITI does not flip due to the massive amounts of low costing removal in standard. Meaning 19 times out of 20 times, your win condition is going to be mil. Therefor, control would probably be the better call. Plus, if you do flip TITI you give yourself a second chance to counter all creatures who may of slipped onto the board prior to the flip.

If you're really wanting to keep the BR build, I'd consider side boarding in Jori En, Ruin Diver for a bigger board presence or too out right replace TITI. It's another way to draw into cards which feeds your primary win condition and it survives Kozilek's Return. However, it is still gonna die to Languish, Lightning Axe and Grasp of Darkness.. all the things that would nuke TITI.

50% of your lands are not "islands". Yes the other 50% tap for a blue sources, no they are not islands. Also, you'll need red mana to activate Molten Vortex and cast Magmatic Insight and Tormenting Voice Therefor, you'll probably be discarding a few of the 12 islands you are running with meaning Engulf the Shore is practically a dead draw or a very weak removal spell/ a turn 8ish Languish that doesn't even kill off creatures. Discarding lands also reduces the effectiveness of Clash of Wills. (Spell Shrivel is better imo)8 out of 12 red sources enter tapped and the other 4 cost 1 life to produce red mana. This is super bad juju in any control deck.

I know you said you wouldn't own, but I'd seriously consider one origins card if any. Talent of the Telepath is a heck if a card that practically screams oh oh I mil and I flip TITI, fast! Opponent mils 7 and you get to cast two spells if milled this way for zero cost if you have spell mastery. You go from giving your opponent 4-6 turns to deal with TITI to 1-3 turns. What I'm trying to say is make TITI a threat that it should be and not a meh lol nice 0/4 defender that sparkles.

Thank you very much. I'll definitely look for a could of Talent of the Telepaths.

My deck is somewhat similar, but mono-blue. I am running four Talent of the Telpaths. Might give you some ideas: Startled Monoblue Milling
