Origins + Dragons of Tarkir Only Deck Ideas

Standard Deck Help forum

'Sup guys!

I'm an old time player, sucked back in the dark tunnel of mtg (I used to play an aggro mono red goblin on Onlsaught Block).

Since my plan is to get the most bang for my buck, I've decided to get back in action with a deck using only Origins and Dragons of Tarkir, so that I can play FNM at least for a year or so.

I tried searching for something like that, but I always find decks including stuff from previous sets in standard.

So I'm asking the all-powerful hive mind: could you point me to a deck that can decently work using only cards from those 2 sets?

Yeah, I know. It's a big limitation. But on the other hand, I only have another request: it should be, in order of preference, black, blue or red (or any combination of them). So it's not important if it's aggro or control or whatnot.

Any help is much appreciated, and let me know if I posted in the wrong thread :o

I would advise to wait another month for standard to rotate with Battle for Zendikar and then figure it out.

Contract from Below (Origins and Tarkir) is only using cards from Origins and Tarkir block. You can substitute dig through time with Dragonlord's Prerogative, rite of undoing with Disperse, clever impersonator with another Disperse and simply not include fetches and Dismal Backwater - use basics instead.

These changes also lower the cost of the deck significantly to around 70-80 bucks.

GB Elves are an idea: The only ones that will remain in standard after rotation are those from Magic Origins.

Support for the deck can include Collected Company, whatever Elves we get from Battle for Zendikar, you can splash blue for Mirror Mockery (mirror mockery is for the Shaman of the Pack triggers), and other draw spells.

Alternatively, if Green isn't your thing, we should get a load of goblins from BFZ too, and there will be some decent goblin cards, but they are kinda spread out amongst the Tarkir block cards. So Mono Red Goblins is an idea, particularly since Goblin Piledriver is now back in standard =)

Let me know what you think.

Well, you're probably both right, maybe I should wait for BFZ to come out before making a decision. After all it's almost here.

Anyway thank you both for your suggestion, Contract from Below (Origins and Tarkir) looks definitely interesting.

On the other hand green (and especially elves) are not really my thing... But the goblin suggestion is definitely nice, since I still have 4 Goblin Piledriver from Onslaught somewhere in my house. I'll wait and see... my dream would be a mono black.

BTW, in the meantime I found a R/U deck based only on origins, if anyone reading is interested: The Origins of Thopters

(This might not need mentioning...?) Don't be scared off by commons/uncommons or bulk-rares from Khans and Fate, either, since they're easy to find and cost next to nothing.

If Mono Black is your bae, then mono black Vampires are a possibility- We already know that we're getting a new Drana (the Kalastrian Bloodchief) in BFZ (there's a playmat with her art on it that will be the Game Day Champ prize), and there's the likes of Defiant Bloodlord.

Of course, there's Malakir Cullblade too.
