Paying mana costs for high CMC cards effectively

Standard Deck Help forum

Posted on Oct. 17, 2016, 10:38 a.m. by NovianArgent

I seem to run into this problem all the time, paying for all my high CMC cards like Eldrazdi and Angels, which generally have very high mana costs, I would like suggestions on cards that might help alleviate those costs, help pay for them, or perhaps get them out without paying for them.

Id post a deck if i had one facing this problem, but I havent made one because of this problem.

If we're just talking standard, Aetherworks Marvel is probably going to be your best option. There's also Conduit of Ruin if you're playing with Eldrazi. Maybe Herald of Kozilek to drop the costs down some more. Aside from that, maybe some jank build around Ever After or something?

If we're talking more eternal formats, There's quite a few ways around paying the costs. Most direct would probably be something like Quicksilver Amulet or Elvish Piper. Sneak Attack would work too, if only for the turn. There's also spells like Show and Tell or Tooth and Nail. There's a lot in green, mainly, like Green Sun's Zenith or Chord of Calling. Note though, that you don't get the cast trigger for most of your big eldrazi since you're not really casting them. Cryptic Gateway is underrated in tribal builds.

For cost reduction, there are some other options too, like Urza's Incubator, Herald of War for Angels, Eye of Ugin for Eldrazi, and so on.

Aetherworks Marvel is the best choice.

However I use to run a deck that involved Cryptolith Rite and a lot of smaller Eldrazi and other creature cards so that I was capable of getting a turn 5 Ormendahl, Profane Prince and or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger out. However I have stopped using this deck sadly, as it's not entirely viable if you don't draw a Titan. However with more aggro decks currently I would be quickly dead if I typically tried to tap my creatures for extra mana.

common problem i run into when i try to build angel decks. and lately eldrazi decks. but these suggestions might help. Modern and the other formats are quite a bit more flexible, standard just isnt real good for em right now.
