Spell Queller overrated?
Standard Deck Help forum

Am I the only one that feels that Spell Queller is overrated. I often find playing spellqueller less than impressive. Its a cool counter on a 2/3 flying body but that's about it. I feel that just running straight counters would be better because I won't have to deal with the spell again when spell queller is killed and I rather my opponents kill spells be dead cards in their hands. Does anyone else share my opinion or have good reasoning to run spell queller over a hard counter. I'm not running spirits if that also affects my opinion of its use.

Countering a Voltaic Brawler - meh.
Countering a 11/11 Death's Shadow and swinging for lethal - yay.
It's only overrated because the threats in standard are minor in the 1-4 mana range.

I was helping my friend test against various decks for some time yesterday. One of the decks we ran through was U/W flash. The deck is seriously legit. I'm surprised it didn't have more players at Kaladesh. The amount of work Spell Queller did was phenomenal. It often caught a tireless tracker or some comparable spell. The tempo provided felt great. Generating a board state by going Thraben, Copter, Queller into a Gideon just did nasty things.
I'd say the best cards in standard are often over-hyped, but there's mostly a reason people play them. Queller does work.

It's certainly better than a hard counter in some decks. In control decks like any from the PT, hard counters are better. But UW Flash is a real deck, and midrange decks really love Spell Q. If you can't make good use of the body, don't play it. If you do, absolutely stick it.

Thanks for all the input everyone. That all made a lot of sense to me. I think I'm just not appreciating spell queller because I have the wrong deck for it. Maybe I can rework my deck a bit or I'll make a new deck for it. Anyway thanks again!

It's just such a huge tempo play, taking a 4 mana walker from them and getting a 2/3 is pretty great! Then the have to target that with removal rather than something else or if they target something else you just keep on with Queller! The card is awesome.

I think the biggest thing here is that you're approaching queller with the mindset that it's a counterspell for a control deck.
That's not what he is, he's a Delay or Remand effect. Buying you time while providing a body to kill your opponent.
Tempo is not control and vice-versa.
Once upon a time people thought that Tidehollow Sculler was a bad card.

It's because standard sucks. The more powerful the problem, the more valuable an answer is, even if it's temporary.
