Trying to think up a half decent blue and white control deck for origins standard. Will post what I currently have in the comment's below since the button to add a picture doesn't show up in this text box.

Thoughts?

The syncopate is a Clash of Wills, and the islands at the top left are Knight of the White Orchids

The knights are awesome on the draw and allow for a huge tempo swing, and the soulfire grandmasters can just keep rebuying value, as well as provide protection from mono-red garbage which should be very popular out of the gates.

The two Sphinx's Tutelage are there for grindier match ups, and a good loot engine in the late game.

Three Celestial Flare's are a concession to stormbreath still being in the format.

I feel like using Soulfire Grand Master just as a buyback effect is too costly when you could just add in something with a little more kick. Might I suggest Monastery Mentor? This deck is built to cast as many noncreature as possible, giving you a bunch of tokens as counter attack. It also is great against those aggro decks because you'll have plenty of blockers handy.

I just feel like the early blocker with life link is more valuable against stuff like goblin piledriver, rabblemasters, and outburst. Plus I really want to be holding up dissolve on turn three instead of tapping out for the monastery mentor.

First of all, thank you for calling it Azorius and not Ojutai. I really prefer the guilds.

Second, I like where this deck is going so far. I really like Reality Shift as a one-of in control decks. I know it's more of a Tempo card, but it can do wonders in the right situation, and it saves you from the Breathy-Breath Dragon of Hate White.

Maybe Harbinger of the Tides would be a good addition as well, not sure what i'd cut though.

Reality Shift is fine, but i'd rather not give them a card. I should have a counter ready by the time a red midrange deck has five mana available. The biggest thing that I think might come up is turn four Thunderbreak into turn five Stormbreath. That would be an issue.

Harbinger of the Tides would be hard to play with Knight of the White Orchid. That's really heavily felt by your mana base.

Agreed. I do think the Knight is better because of the fact it allows you to basically ramp into five mana by turn four on the draw. And maybe I need to include more End Hostilities to take advantage of that.

I've also considered splashing green to put two Gaea's Revenge in the sideboard for any control matchups. Thing seems stupid.

I've been testing this a bit... But it gets run over by goblins a lot lol. Everything else and its good though.

kyuuri117: Don't splash for that. Just play Pearl Lake Ancient.

If you were going to splash green, I would splash it just for Dragonlord Dromoka. It's great for those mirror matchups.

I feel like Monastery Mentor is the big draw to running white control.

My take: U/W Mentor Control

Myth Realized has exceeded expectations for me as a build around card.

I don't like Sphinx's Tutelage. Ashiok seems like a much better card for a mill strategy.

I also don't like SFGM in this. He fits in R/W or Jeskai IMO. Without burn, he's underwhelming.

It's tough to comment too much on your deck without seeing the sideboard. It's crucial to U/W.

Mentor plays poorly with counterspells IMO. You need offensive spells to trigger prowess when youre attacking to make him shine.

wish12oz The Knights and Soulfire's are concessions to mono-red aggro while also having relevance in all other match ups. Obviously mono-red isn't going to be a good match up for UW control game one, but that's what the sideboard is for. Gotta wait and see what's popular before making that though.

buildingadeck Yea i've given up on the green splash. Don't like PLA though. Swapped Elspeth for Ugin.

SirFowler I kinda wanted to do the same thing Sultai Control did splashing green for the satyr wayfinders, especially as you can recur em with Ojutai's command, but I gave up on that since I don't think the deck can take advantage of delve as well.

Ohnoeszz Monastery Mentor is not a control card unfortunately. It's counter productive having that in your hand or on the board when you actually need to clear the board with a wipe. I'm going to be sending Tutelage to the sideboard as a two-three of for any control mirrors. It races better than ashiok. Soulfire Grand Master is in the deck because A) Mono-Red Goblins and Atarka Red are going to be very popular decks out of the gates, the lifelink and early goblin blocker is important. And B), for 7 mana he rebuys counterspells. He's a late game trump card in a control mirror as well. Lastly, it's actually impossible to make a sideboard without knowing what to sideboard against. Is B/G Elves actually going to be good and popular enough to have to dedicate sideboard slots to? How much abzan aggro am I going to see post rotation? G/R Devotions is clearly the strongest deck in the format pre-origins, but how many people are actually going to play it in my area? I don't know the answer to any of this and as such don't have a dedicated sideboard at the moment.

Anyway, here is the updated version of the deck
