With Ahmonket, what to do?

Standard Deck Help forum

I want to brew a little, so lets brainstorm... in standard, which could be better? Sultai, Abzan or Bant? I want to make a control deck. Give me some ideas, so I can start pre-ordering stuff.

For the record, I think Bant could be fun for some mid-rangey shenanigans. Sultai would make a great control deck IMO.

Sultai Zombies with Nissa and Hapatra look pretty dope, I havent seen anything that screams Abzan or Bant to me yet, I'm building a Grixis Cycling control deck personally though.

I think there could be potential in a Bant value creature deck (similar to the Bant Coco decks) with Nissa, Steward of Elements as the centerpiece. Get her to 3 loyalty and have all your creatures be under 3 cmc. Just think of the card advantage!

I don't like the new Nissa as much as others because it's difficult to guarantee that the top card of your deck will be a creature. Without being able to do this with some regularity, the new Nissa is garbage because she does so little. Scrying has no effect on the boardstate. -6 is tough until much into the late game when the game is likely already decided. Thus, we can deduce that this PW relies heavily on her 0 ability. It's how she can actually effect the board. You can do like Delver decks in Modern do and just cram as many creatures as possible, but, especially in a Ux deck, you cannot simply win games reliably by just having great creatures. Every sideboard slot that isn't a creature pulls away from the new Nissa, thus we must see this card as a support slot instead of a build-around.

I see Esper Control being very powerful in Amonkhet. Cast Out, in my testing, has been excellent. BW and UW Control also have some play, bringing consistency which is relevant when the meta is as fast as it is now. I expect that certain creature-based aggression and RDW decks to show up, as well as modified 4c CopyCat and Mardu Vehicles.

In the WotC article regarding what they seem to think will happen to Standard with the release of Amonkhet, the designers pointed out some very interesting points. For one, many of these mechanics don't ask you to build around them. Anyone can play a Cycling spell; anyone can play Aftermath. Thus, we will likely see modified versions of decks that we already have. I don't see any strategy from this new set overpowering any of the decks from Aether Revolt Standard. Thus, it is our burden not to reinvent the meta, but overcome the meta as it is now with the new tools we have before us.
