2 headed giant decks

Standard forum

Does anyone else play 2HG STD at their local game shops for FNM's?

If so, I would LOVE to see the deck ideas/strategies that have worked well for you.

Currently, I am working on a Grixis Control deck that's paired with my partner's Junk Rites/Land Destruction deck using 4 x Acidic Slime and 4 x Sylvan Primordial

I play 2HG a lot, with friends, though not Standard, so I wouldn't be able to help you.

In general you'll fare well with cards and effects that affect each opponent, Extort, gains you 2 life and 2 damage, for example. Mind Grind hits around Witchbane Orb s and also affects each player. Combo'ed with a Duskmantle Guildmage that could easily be lots of damage.

Don't know if that's of any help?

Unfortunately it didn't... I have seen all of those in action. I have been using things like: Deathrite Shaman , Skull Rend , Crypt Ghast , etc

What format do you play in? What kinds of decks/strategies do you normally "go to"?

1 control deck + 1 midrange?2 Mill/control decks?2 aggro decks?

Always go for decks that have the same goal.

An aggro deck, and a burn deck will each want to kill the others by damage, and thus will work together, however playing aggro and mill will often make the road to victory that much longer, since each deck will be trying to win in a different way. If you're playing aggro+mill against aggro+aggro, you can probably imagine who would get to their goal first.

Going from my previous comment, control decks usually play well with any deck as it will help secure time for your ally.

My That's Fog-ing annoying (need help) deck can prevent all damage during opponents attacks, and still let damage through on our attack. If damage on our end isn't enough to win, then milling will serve as an alt win-con.

Dimir Mill decks and Extort decks can be horrible in 2HG standard when paired with a speedy agro deck shame nobody plays it at my store I'd love to test out some combos.

I kind of knew those already. I mainly play the control deck while my partner tries to be the main attacker (although I have a few creatures/keyrunes of my own to use).

What are your guys' thoughts on double control deck teams? These come across as rather annoying to play against and they basically win my milling you to death

Dual control is annoying. Really good, but annoying. Good thing the rules about card count, counts both libraries.

Yeah but that doesn't matter when you have an Izzet Control deck and an Azorius control deck with 2 each of Psychic Spiral and Jace, Memory Adept .

They usually end up targeting me with the mill as I draw more cards. This led me to having my partner run a reanimator with 4x Acidic Slime and 4x Sylvan Primordial to hopefully keep their mana screwed while i contain their counterspells

Izzet and Azorious control just generally work well with most other decks especially Izzet because of how adaptive they can be and dat overload in 2HG. :3

Making me imagine a Guttersnipe Izzet control deck combined with an Extort deck in some cases you wouldn't even need to attack.

Seen those too. They can drain ya pretty fast if you let 'em

R/B/W 2 headed giant Personally I like extort and battalion in 2HG since both trigger across the board. Extort especially is pretty nasty with a control deck running on your side to help sow down your opponents. A good Debt to the Deathless is all you need to win most games.

So we fared as I thought we would... we didn't get to face the Azorius/Dimir control i was expecting (although they were there). A couple of misplays on my part (targeting the wrong creature with a Dreadbore cost us a game and not seeing a Craterhoof Behemoth in my opponent's graveyard during another).

all in all I think our strategy of Grixis Control/Junk Reanimator w/ land destruction was a good choice (we faced a mirror of this but ours was built to beat the other control decks easier which they had trouble with)

Aye i had a game the other day that was kinda amusing i was playing an Izzet burn/counter deck my friend was playing a mono-black aggro and they were playing a Jundish deck which was basically a Gruul/Golgari deck and a Selesneya tokens. They got a quick advantage due to having cheaper things to bring in at that point but i managed to keep them at bay with tap cards counters and various other things. I had one Guttersnipe out but they kept managing to gain life with the lifelink equip then my teammate started running dry just at that point i got another Guttersnipe onto the field they were on about 20 and i had for mana left. What happened next was so amusing with those two out each instance and sorcery deals 4 to each opponent so 8 then they played Deadbridge Chant and i countered it with Essence Backlash dealing a total of 14 damage and they couldn't kill us that turn so all i had to do was play another instance or sorcery. Game set and match which was kinda amusing because the person i was playing with had 5 turns of mana with nothing left in his hand. All in all my conclusion from that is Guttersnipe can be op in two-headed giant.

How did you counter Deadbridge Chant with Essence Backlash ? You have to counter a CREATURE which Deadbridge Chant is not...

Oh snap i actually must of not seen that brilliant that's a massive fail on my behalf either way the other person had played a creature that turn so the result would of been the same. Wow i can't believe none of us actually noticed that. LOL!

harrydemon117 says... #20

That's pretty funny. Now you CAN use Essence Backlash in response to a Loxodon Smiter just to do the damage, or even a creature cast by Cavern of Souls , bu it at least must be a CREATURE :)

That was the one stipulation I decided NOT to run that counterspell in my 2HG deck

beakedbard says... #21

Aye gonna remove that now it wasn't really that what did most of that damage anyway even if that had been a Cancel or something like that the the snipers would of dealt 8 then i had two instance and sorcery's in my hand and they weren't playing blue and had used all their removal drawn by that point. If you can keep them protected in 2HG it becomes horrible. Man i can't actually believe i missed that still i normally fully read every detail down to the card designer. XD

Hey it happens.

Another good "pinger" I've been using is Lobber Crew especially with Izzet Charm , Psychic Strike or Counterflux allows me to reuse it.

Skull Rend is another "control" spell to use in conjunction with Lobber Crew too. I found that Lobber Crew blocks Boros Reckoner quite nicely while giving you some damage to each opponent on their End Step :)
