2015 Nutering Theros Block?

Standard forum

With all the enchantment destroying capabilities example: Back to nature 1G to destroy all enchantments. Didn't the mtg mucky mucks not see that 1/2 of all the Theros block just got blown out the window? Why not wait to reprint these cards until 2nd or third set of the upcoming block? Seems like a waist of money to buy Theros block now. Anyone else feel this way?

I am not so sure that they made it obsolete. However, I hate that they did not continue it at least a LITTLE bit like it was a cute idea and it just got completely dropped and never got, what I feel, would have made it a viable archetype.

Reclamation Sage

That's it. I wouldn't really call that an overwhelming force to be reckoned with. 2 cards in one color seems very very very easy to play around.

Wizards usually plans on printing some kind of release valve in a set following a specific theme just in case there's enough support to create some kind of potentially super oppressive deck.

Enchantment decks don't see very much competitive play, so no one has good reason to run Back to Nature in their sideboards anyway.

I'm sure Theros block is worth at least a waist of money anyway.

Hushwing Gryff was not created to neuter Constellation decks.

Hushwing Gryff was created for M14, but they thought it was too much for that set (something something reasons), so it was moved to M15.

It does do a good job at shutting down Constellation, but really, who's going to do that anyway?

theros was a meh block anyways, they could have just printed mediocre cards and it would have pushed a lot of the block out of play.

I did not say that the gryff was printed to shut down constellation I am just saying that it could if it ever became a big thing

Cards are printed to limit the power of other cards all the time. Metagames change all the time. That's part of Standard. Griping about it will never change that. Play the deck that you want to play and accept the fact that sideboard cards exist to stop your plans.

I find it hard to take this post seriously given the misspellings and exaggeration of facts. There really aren't as many super effective means of destroying enchantments, and Back to Nature is the only enchantment-specific sweeper in Standard.

Also, removal doesn't make enchantments unplayable.

We won't know where Theros actually stands in terms of set strength until Khans is released.

This thread is ALMOST equivalent to saying "oh no! Perilous Vault ! It makes nonland permanent decks obsolete!"

Naw...it's really just Back to Nature that is the main enchant hate. Hushwing Gryff would have been bonkers in m14. Off button for Thragtusk , Restoration Angel , etc. It's more of modern card now, I believe

Sam Stoddard said that Hushwing Gryff was in M14, but got removed because an early version of Bestow was an ETB ability. This meant there was a significant hate card for a major block mechanic, which is a feel bad, so they changed Hushwing Gryff into Imposing Sovereign and pushed the gryff back to M15.

And as far as hate cards are concerned, see Stony Silence post Scars of Mirrodin, Soldier of the Pantheon post Return to Ravnica, Rest in Peace post Innistrad, etc.

Just gonna throw it out there that Hushwing Gryff is a nice answer to some devotion decks... It's pretty good to play in response to Gary, Fanatic of Mogis , and Master of Waves . I mean in a lot of control decks, a better response is simply a counter spell, but when that luxury is not available the gryff can definitely help

Wizards consistently does the "print a good hate card after a block focus" thing, it's just safe game design. That said, resilient decks can survive 1 hate card. While it's scary, a Rakdos Charm or Tormod's Crypt doesn't stop a dredge deck either, just slows it down.

Think back to Soldier of the Pantheon .

Or think even further back, to Ash Zealot and Scavenging Ooze .
