Am I the only one?

Standard forum

I am a johnny player in magic and honestly right now, standard is really fucking boring. There's no real cards that you wonder why are there and try to find a purpose for like Hidden Strings or Young Pyromancer every card is like, well obviously you play it in that deck or it just sucks. I really try to believe in potential for all cards that have effects, but these cards are just really fucking boring and everything already serves it's purpose. It sounds like I'm complaining, but actually this is just a cry for help. I've been getting out of magic and I love the game, it's just not very fun at the time being. Can someone else with these struggles please tell me what you've been doing during this time. I switch decks like every week and I haven't even been going to FNM's anymore. I've been playing CS:GO the hole time and I've been enjoying it a lot, but I really want to play magic on the downtime and standard isn't cutting the cake right now. Am I the only one, if not tell me what to do please?!?

Switch to an eternal format. Lots of interaction there.

@Dekord do you agree any any sense though?

Sometimes you just need to take a break, even from Magic. If you're not enjoying it, play something else for a while, then come back and see if its still fun.

Or change format. Commander is really fun and challenging to build in. Limited might be another option your LGS offers that might be more interesting for you as well.

It's cool was just curious if you did or not! @raithe000

I dropped Standard when literally 100 percent of my meta was BUG control and Jeskai control. EDH is where it's at, bro. Fun, (mostly) non-competitive, and the card pool is brilliant.

If only I could find a deck with my taste and budget! D: @canterlotguardian

My suggestion is just come up with a stupid but fun deck for yourself to play. The problem with standard right now, is that there are so many Net Decks running rampant, no one wants to get creative. But this is the time for a deck innovator to shine. Splash a color here or there. Go all out and utilize cards people don't see ever. Cards are good in their own sense, and most of the meta tries to plan for the Net Decks. The innovative and creative deck throws off the Net Decks as to what you are actually doing with yours. That's why if you've seen any Opens or Grand Prix's lately, a new deck or two will pop up that is from someone's creation. Such as that Temur Ascendancy Combo deck that a very rare amount of people even thought of. Or the 4 color recursion deck that was at an Open not too long ago (or was it at a Grand Prix). Or Brad Nelson's 4 color deck with Siege Rhino AND Butcher of the Horde. Innovation rewards players. Or create your own format with a group of friends. My friends and I at my LGS, started a 2 headed-giant Commander format. It's pretty fun.

Taking a small break helped me a bit. As a johnny-spike I feel your woes.

Standard is at a pivotal place right now. We're introducing set #7 to the metagame, and set's #1-3 are all ~ a year old. What this means is that most of the decks that are played have been widely examined and studied and what we have after over a year of playing is a set of decks running the best cards. There's little room to move because we have a very good understanding of the cards there are to choose from. Adding in DTK is not going to change that.

Sure, there will be additions such as new Sidisi in the whip decks or Deathmist raptor in some green decks. Or even the commands in various locations. But the decks are still going to be the same decks for the most part and the same colors are going to be playing most of the same good cards.

What I'm getting at is that there will not be a lot of room for brewing until rotation occurs. This is natural for this point in a standard metagame. And this staleness is the exact reason why Maro and the rest of WOTC have decided to input "metamorphosis" and change up the way sets and rotation occurs.

In short, hold tight and wait patiently, for in a number of months we will have a brand new Standard environment. Until then, play what makes you have fun, be it EDH or netdecking or brewing and losing! lol

Standard is pretty boring, especially for Johnny's that want to build new things. You do have time now to deckbuild with all the new Dragons of Tarkir cards, but that might become a bit dull. I'd recommend to switch to Modern or EDH, both have lots of interaction and sizable card pools, plus you can do well with homebrews instead of the tiered decks.

Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, I recommend switching to modern. It's a super diverse format that rewards creativity in competent players. Standards problem is the small card pool - it limits interactions.

March 20, 2015 3:37 p.m.

I have a four-color burn deck in Modern right now and it's pretty sweet. I have it up here on TO.

March 20, 2015 3:38 p.m.

Come join us. In Modern we have Abzan and more Abzan!

Seriously, come to Modern, we have all sorts of Johnny stuff sitting around. So much Jonny stuff I'm pretty sure your could Johnny a Johnny if you really want to Johnny. And yes I vaguely remember a Kiora fan. Suit your name up, son, we gotta know who you really are.

I remember Kiora fan. :D

The limited card pool and the fact that my deck won't even be legal within a year are the reasons why I haven't bothered to give Standard a try. I have enough cards to do it, but my focus has always been on Modern.

I had a similar problem with this standard, so I just decided to hell with it, i'm playing Chromanticore. Well, that didn't work out, but it turned out that the shell that I put it into worked super well if I took out the bad red cards. Quatro Control is what i've been playing for a few weeks to moderate success. It's hyper janky, but is fairly fun to play.

Sounds like you need a vacation at the limited resort.

March 20, 2015 5:15 p.m.

yeah have you tried just drafting? that can give you an entirely new perspective on Standard (on any format, hell).

March 20, 2015 5:16 p.m.

SpartanCEL says... #21

I really enjoy drafting but I'm in a similar boat.

I have a mono-black standard with gary and a temur monsters deck. Neither are hyper competitive but they're fun to play. Part of me wants to create a competitive standard deck, the rakdos in me wants to use Underworld Cerberus. But the problem being Stormbreath Dragon and Hero's Downfall being so expensive (relatively) it turns me away. I'd much rather invest in a modern deck because it won't rotate out and it'll stay competitive.

I'm hoping Origins and especially Return to Zendikar has great cards so I can kill 2 birds with one stone (enemy fetchlands anyone?)

For now I'm putting my time and energy into limited and modern. Modern has crazy possibilities, especially with the allied fetches roughly 10$ each

You said that most of the cards have an obvious spot where they fit or they suck. Challenge that idea, try to find new and unique ways to play those cards, push the limits of deck building and create something truly different, you never know, you might just break the meta.
