No one has really thought of the combo below as a "competitive" combo until this happened:

Bant- draw all the cards! Playtest

Top 4 FNM, Bant Midrange. Anyway, the combo:

Archangel of Thune + Fathom Mage + Horizon Chimera

Its not a bad combo, not at all. Now, here's why i think you can basically win. Once you combo, you are gonna gain a lot of life, have a lot of cards, and have a lot of big creatures. lots of decks in standard aren't prepared for that.

Now, what are your guys thought on this combo? Good? Bad? Only for casual? What is your opinion?

For competitive standard, it's bad. It's a 3 piece combo that requires all pieces (Which are 4+ mana) to be alive and intact through a combat step, unless there's another way of setting it off in the deck.

If the meta isn't filled to the brim with black cards (ie, things that kill your combo instantly), then I guess it's an ok thing to try at FNM. But no, it is far too fragile to try to play competitively. I'd say that it should be left at casual / low competition FNM.

I saw it on here a few times. A buddy put it together and took it to FNM once. It worked once per match pretty much. Once they figured out the combo they off-ed the pieces ASAP. It's a funny combo for sure, but I don't think it'll be competetive. You need to protect it too much

Also have to note their CMC. It'll probably take you 3 turns to set up, whereas another deck has probably built up their board state a lot more by then.

Any of these "infinite combos" are extremely unstable. I think when using extreme combos you need to make sure each card is extremely good on its own. The Boros Reckoner , Azorius Charm , and Boros Charm infinite life combo is the only one I see as good. Each of those three cards are extremely powerful on its own. Fathom Mage IMO is awful, unless you luckily manage to pull that combo off.

Ummm... What if that combo went off, AND another of your creatures was a Sage of Hours ?!? 0.o

Well, like any combo deck you have to play control until you're ready to drop it. If you're stalling until you've got board control and you drop that onto the board two or three pieces at a time (not likely but possible) then you should have the win locked up...that being said if you've got board control why not just drop an AEtherling onto the board.

I like this combo, it just needs the right shell around it to make it viable.

Play Bant.

Don't run Fathom Mage + Horizon Chimera .

Do run Archangel of Thune + Courser of Kruphix + Scavenging Ooze .

Actually win games.

Live happily ever after.

I think Bant works best as a midrange or control deck. I see a lot of untapped potential with Ephara, God of the Polis working with cards like Brimaz, King of Oreskos , Prophet of Kruphix , Advent of the Wurm , etc.

Bant midrange has enough powerful cards to where it doesn't have to run any subpar cards to make it good. For example, MUD devotion runs a bunch of not-so-great-cards to make the deck work, which Bant midrange wouldn't have to. Imagine if MUD's card quality is as high as MBD, Junk Midrange, or U/W/X Control....
