In you're opinion, what is the best card in standard right now?

I say Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx .

Nykthos isn't even the best land. Mutavault is much better. I'm not sure there's one single "best" card though.

Reposted thread, but I'd say Thoughtseize .

An argument can be made for many cards but By sheer prevalence Mutavault has a solid lock IMO

Sedge Scorpion or Charging Badger but by most played definitely Mutavault

trentfaris242 says... #8

Ok I'm changing my answer to Charging Badger .

In all seriousness, the only reason Mutavault is commonly seen as #1 is because all decks can play it.

Dalektable says... #9

Mutavault By sheer numbers alone, though it's a sick card regardless. I'm going to splurge and force myself to get a couple whenever i decide to build my modern Elves deck.

I will never stop answering these threads with Basic Island .

Has to be Thoughtseize . Oh does your hand have a slight weakness? GG. One of the most powerful black cards ever printed, crazy to see it in standard.

InnerFlame says... #12

I just wanted to see where everyone was at with the best overall card. I guess I'm not surprised to see Mutavault up there. I'd just rather have the shrine cause it has potential to get out a lot more creatures than a single 2/2 or give colored mana instead of colorless. Thoughtsieze I'm not surprised to see. It has a lot of potential to throw off the early game.

ThatBlueMage lol that's why I think the shrine is the best. Yes mana is the most important card in a deck. So aside form the basics, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is my vote. It can give you so many blue mana!

@ThatBlueMage: Agreed. Island is the most OP card ever printed.

Thoughtseize, Abrupt Decay

Invisible_Stalker Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is incredibly powerful but it has to be played to. That being said, I'm working on a modern Mono Green Devotion deck that can consistently get out Primeval Titan out on turn two. Pretty fun.

InnerFlame says... #19

Dalektable I'm working on a similar deck. Can you help me with it by giving a few suggestions. I'm nowhere near happy with it yet. Suggestions ON R/G Casual?

Schuesseled says... #20

Reprints don't count, because they aren't only in standard.

April 2, 2014 5:27 p.m.

Reprints absolutely count. Deathrite Shaman isn't a reprint, but sees play almost exclusively in Legacy. Yet, he is still a Standard card.

All cards that are legal in Standard are Standard cards.

I agree with NobodyPicksBulbasaur...except for nobody picking bulbasaur. When I said standard, I meant anythihng legal in standard.

In the current standard, Swamp and Island are the best.

Ok, I'll give you a serious answer, maybe not the "best card in standard" but perhaps the most underrated, Turn / Burn : neutralize just about any pesky creature out there: Blood Baron of Vizkopa , Obzedat, Ghost Council , Desecration Demon , Stormbreath Dragon , Master of Waves (cast Turn and the elementals all lose their +1/+1 and die), any god becomes killable, and so on. You can let just about any scary thing attack you, you cast turn and chump block, while the burn hits the opponents face.

April 2, 2014 7:37 p.m.

InnerFlame says... #27

Apoptosis you may have just given some of the most reasonable answer. You not only named cards that I am personally afraid of, but cards that everyone can say are good.

Bellock86 says... #28

I second Invisible_Stalker. Though like he said Turn / Burn may not be the best it certainly underrated. That might inspire me to make a budget red blue deck just to see if I can make it work. Lol. Well done Apoptosis.

Pack Rat is all the cards in standard.

Yeah. Pack Rat Detention Sphere says hi. Lol. Sorry. Trolling a little there. I hate the rat.

April 2, 2014 8:39 p.m.

Dalektable says... #31

I second Turn / Burn . For awhile i tried very hard to make Izzet control work (It was aiight') and that card was an absolute all star.

Slycne says... #32

I think it really depends on where you hang your hat for defining "best". The most powerful card in standard is Sphinx's Revelation , no other card approaches that value. The most impactful card on the format would probably be Thoughtseize , mulliganing is the worst in this current metagame. The best all around card is by far Mutavault though. The versatility and consistency combined with the cheap cost of a few colorless lands is something every deck should seriously consider running and/or shifting their deck to accommodate it, nothing else in standard even approaches that level of pervasiveness.

Apoptosis says... #33

Thanks Invisible_Stalker, Bellock86, and Dalektable. This is my current standard deck that features Turn / Burn : Houston, we're going initiate a controlled burn

Dorotheus says... #34

I could be here all day really just boiling down the meta into a small list of 5 cards with thorough reasons for each one, that the entire standard meta is just revolved around right now, cards that enable other ones and meta meta meta meta. But ain't no one got time for that.

In no order: Thassa, God of the Sea , Sphinx's Revelation , AEtherling , Mutavault , Gray Merchant of Asphodel , Runner Up: Hero's Downfall

Through wordy rhetorical breakdowns, as of right now all decks come down to these being the most powerful cards in standard at the moment. Everything else that is powerful, just enable these cards.

I bet izzet goes rise I'm JtN. They haven't given it as abundant of good cards as they have with the rest. I get they pump up Golgari too.
