BIG RED Discussion

I would like to discuss the potential of BIG RED in constructed tourney play. Strionic resonator and copying burning earth, reckoner, curse of bloodletting and Mindsparker and ash zealot triggers and even late game zealous conscript triggers. Is BIG RED stable enough to handle fast aggro match ups with the heavy one drops and enchantments.

Big Red is already a competitive archetype, indeed it top 8'd GP Calgary. However, it does not use almost any of the cards you mentioned (they are too slow/cute). Most Big Red decks have a shell of:
21 Mountain
With 3 flex slots (Chandra, Pyromaster , Brimstone Volley , stuff like that.

Well I saw the sideboard and it had blasphemous act and strionic resonator. I believe a polished version would side Mindsparker for control and Cavern of Souls to side in for Mutavault I thought that doofy sometime somewhere 4 cost Redirect/reverberate spell was kinda meh. I want something solid against control with a red deck whether its RDW or Big Red

Wild Ricochet is that spell. It's actually quite useful. It does better than counter a spell in most situations.

My opinion on 4 burning earth is there isnt time for that and pulling 3 in a match without a Wheel of Fortune type card like Reforge the Soul is probably ending in a game loss. One of the best in my shop played Big Red in Lansing MI last week and borrowed my Foil burning earth to finish his playset and he gave it back yesterday and said burning earth is almost unplayable in Big Red cause the curve dosnt give you any set up. If you burn every creature from turns 1 thru 3 you might spare 4 mana for 1 burning earth but thats it.

Yea I can see Wild Ricochet Getting play in a Izzet color Burn at the Stake deck with Goblin Electromancer to trim its cost but I dont see Big Red with 4 untapped mana to use that when you normally would use that.

My point exactly except in my barely boros where sometimes soulbonding lightning mualer with Firemane Avenger is better especially with Frontline Medic I still use 4 hellrider. Anyway if you wanna see my take on Big Red look here ..Big Red Cloud

I still think the proper term is RDW, or just Red Deck. I've never heard monored called Big Red before.

Its the deck name given by the decks designer and it is a top end deck no 1 or 2 drop creatures its not RDW. I however like the deck and part with all my 1 drops and 6 of my 2 drops but wont part with Ash Zealot because we are soulmates lol.

I see. Having said that, I don't think a "Fat" mono red deck is viable. Without green to ramp up to tMaw etc. and you don't get to abuse Hellrider as well without a bunch of efficient small creatures prior to swinging with him. Rogue decks occasionally do alright at big tournaments, but it doesn't make them top end.

I say read the article on that topic on TCG main page..its discussed and hellrider still works just a different style all together all that burn.

What do you guys think of Mono-red's chances of remaining competitive after rotation? I know it seems like a stupid question without knowing literally anything about Theros, but losing key cards (Hellrider , Bonfire of the Damned , Pillar of Flame , etc) is definitely going to hurt.
I want to try my hand at it, since it mixes exploding things with elements of control I enjoy (do I deal with this threat or punch their face, knowing enemy strategy, etc), but I'm wary of investing my limited MTG budged in something that is viable for the next month and a half only.

For me I own all but 2 mutavaults and 2 thundermaw which I would gladly sub Zealous conscripts in their stead. So for me its the question to play or not to play. See my barely boros deck has won an FNM top 8ed in a silver and wins 2nd thru 5th place without fail at FNM for 2 months now. So with so few weeks left to play my favorite cards and the feeling I got 3 other great brew who's times almost up as well. I am just apprehensive to go Mono again or Run my expensive Jund Scavenge deck im invested in. Big Red is a real beast in testing and Im considering neglecting all I formentioned to give it a week or 2 maybe. Not being top 8 might humble me lol.

I've never done better than 3-1 at FNM, and that was due to a lucky by round because some poor guy lost his cell phone. That was with an Izzet brew that I've been playing since I got into Magic a few weeks ago. It's a bunch of fun, but it's a little clunky for competitive.
Also, did you say Lansing? I'll be moving back there for school in a few weeks, maybe I'll find out how hard this red deck hits first hand!

Now keep in mind Big Red packs 4x of Searing spear, pillar of flame and bonfire and 3x brimstone volley.
