Born of the Gods Problem

Standard forum

We're all excited for Born of the Gods, this much has to be obvious.

They're basically reprinting Dark Confidant , which is amazing ( Pain Seer, although I don't believe it'll be as good in standard as Dark Confidant is in modern/legacy, or anywhere close to it really... )

Multi-Color gods

New mechanics, and additions to existing mechanics

And overall a lot of interaction and thinking involved in constructed play, which I am all-for, 100%!

My only problem is finding out what to play...

I'm almost certain I want to throw a decent number of Inspired cards into a deck, all because of Epihphany Storm (enchant creature- R, Tap; Draw and Discard) enabling the crap out if it, also making use if useless land-draws in the late game.

Selesnya/Bant is also looking amazing though... With cards like Gladecover Scout , Fleecemane Lion , and Witchstalker already in standard, along with additions coming in I forgot, Hexproof decks could actually be a thing again!! What's better than a Fleecemane Lion that's been activated with an Unflinching Courage on it? Not much... A 6/6 Lifelink, Trample, Hexproof, indestructible? Heck, find a way to give it Double-Strike and they're probably dead that turn!

This meta looks like it's about to shift a large sum, and I'm just upset there's not more of me to play all the fun decks!

My only question;

What decks look good to you?

I really doubt that Pain Seer is going to be anywhere near as good as Dark Confidant . Right now it's preordering at $9, meaning it will probably drop to about $5 after it is released.

The main reason it's not that good is that you need to have attacked with it for you to profit from it. Now, how often are you attacking with a 2/1 in the current standard? Not that often. Plus, even if you do have an opening to attack, it still doesn't have haste, meaning that it starts a turn later than Bob.

Lastly, we still have Underworld Connections , which is a great permanent that also allows you to draw 2 a turn.

The meta's probably not going to shift at all. Mono-Black Devotion is getting even better tools to use so I don't see it not still being the top deck.

ENEyman you don't have to attack with the card man. Springleaf Drum is one option, another is Epiphany Storm as I mentioned, and both are very decent options.

However, I still completely agree with you, I don't think it's too playable. Although my reasoning is that in Standard, your CMC for most cards is much higher than Modern/Legacy, so you'll be taking a lot more damage per trigger.

zandl Mono-Black is definitely going to stay as a Tier-1 Standard deck for sure, I don't see that changing at all. I just feel like a lot of other decks are going to shift, and then new possibilities are going to open up. Maybe it's not going to be extremely drastic, as if a block went out of rotation, but it's still going to have a pretty big impact.

I foresee Gruul aggro or mono-green (splash red [Different then Gruul!]) becoming a pretty strong thing.

I think that the White Weenie decks will love Pain Seer , I mean its a small cheap dude that likes to turn sideways :P

I have to agree on Pain Seer . Everyone hyped it so much, but it always seemed kind of a waste. Bob is good because he can be played and just draws you cards. Pain Seer needs to be tapped. That means you have to either attack, and being a 2/2, will probably mean he dies quite quickly. At best you might get 1-2 cards before a 3 or 4 drop kills him.

The only other option is to play Springleaf Drum or Epiphany Storm , or other effects like them. These cards are only ok to begin with, and without Pain Seer in your hand they become much worse. Having to run enablers for you draw spell just seems bad when you could just play Underworld Connections , Read the Bones , Azorius Charm etc.

Bestach even if that is true, getting 4 damage through and being two cards ahead isnt bad at all. He works for aggro, i can see him working in a W/b weenie build or rakdos aggro

inspiration isn't going to make a heavy dent on standard. its bad. these ideas are bad

megapenthes what ideas?

January 18, 2014 7:31 p.m.

EmblemMan I think he was talking about my ideas, haha.

I will admit, I was on that pre-thought hype when I posted this. Thinking of possibilities is when the "n00b" in me comes out, haha. Then I realize they're not that good and I end up remaking things or going with a different deck, haha.

Still, Inspiration may not make the biggest dent, but Tribute sure as hell will do something. Mid-Range will be more of a thing. Idk

Yeah but 4 damage and 2 cards is a best case scenario. Most of the time it just trades with their Pack Rat , BTE, Frostburn Weird etc. All of which normally have more impact anyway.

Bestach I'm know even if that is true i am going to try my damn hardest to break Pain Seer next standard season. I really hope that this card doesnt find a spot in a top tier 1 decks because that would take all the fun out of it for me. I want to make my own super-competitive deck that forces people to sideboard against me at my local meta. That's my goal at least :p it'll have to wait till next standard season though, i've already got a project for this one's.

Dimir. Dimir is looking amazing now, for aggro, control AND midrange.
Aggro Cards: Cloudfin Raptor , Tormented Hero , Judge's Familiar , Pack Rat , Mutavault , the 3/3 flying bestow for 3, pain seer, Nightveil Specter , Mutavault ,Duskmantle Seer to top a curve. And all of black's removal like Far / Away , Dimir Charm , the -3/-3 for BB, AND Spell Rupture for some control.
Midrange cards: Duskmantle Seer , Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver , Desecration Demon , Cloudfin Raptor , 3/3 flying bestow, AEtherling , Far / Away , Underworld Connections , Pain Seer , Springleaf Drum , Temple of Deceit .
Control cards: AEtherling , Dimir Charm , Temple of Deceit , Dissolve , Far / Away , Opportunity , Jace, Architect of Thought , Underworld Connections , Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver , Omenspeaker .
Even a heroic/inspired build with Hidden Strings , Triton Fortune Hunter , Springleaf Drum , pain seer, Boon of Erebos , Agent of the Fates and Fate Foretold could work. I think dimir looks really promising despite a long period of being shunned.
Also a simic/bant control with jace and Kiora could be very strong, as they both can stop the board really well, and tick up until you unleash an AEtherling or army of 9/9 krakens.
