Can budget work?

Standard forum

Standard isn't the cheapest format, especially if you plan on winning. But personally i love standard the most and want to be able to go to FNM and win. That is to the extent of competitiveness i'm asking. Now for standard I imagine a budget deck to be any deck under $100 dollars, and with that being said i want to know if my deck Silence in the Library is standard playable. I haven't yet bought it and before i do i'd like to hear the tappedout community's opinion on it. So what do you think, in general can a well constructed budget deck do well in tournaments and also can this specific deck do well?

A well constructed budget deck can definitely do well. Most mono colored decks can be well within $100. Now as for your deck, I don't see it being that good. I'm not trying to be mean, it's just that Elite Arcanist is a 1/1 that nearly every deck has and answer for and they can always play instants or use creatures already in play to win past the combo. Also, for multicolored decks the problem with budget is always the mana base. I would try Mono Green. Most of the cards you would use are around .25-3 dollar range, and it's pretty effective.

A big problem with players who play on a budget is they attempt to "replace" more expensive cards. Instead of patchworking a deck together that resembles a top tier deck, make something from the bottom up

Rakdos is probably the your best bet at a budget deck. A guy at my shop built one last week and took first at FNM. Most expensive card was probably Magma Jet , but I forgot if he was running Blood Crypt . Was basically just really solid, cheap guys like Rakdos Cackler and Rakdos Shred-Freak that also happen to buff devotion for like a Fanatic of Mogis or Mogis's Marauder

I just designed a mono green aggro deck that had a TCGplayer avg price of 75.46 and it's pretty decent: Mono Green Budget

I like how budget is <$100. I'm playing Heroes of the Legion for under $20. Just gotta watch out for those Supreme Verdict s.

Blood Red Summer has a $22 low price on TCG.

I'd think it would handle itself pretty well.

@WovenNebula - that's probably the best budget deck I've seen since Theros was released. Ash Zealot is becoming one of my favorite cards from the set. You don't even need her ability.

Death by mana dork, no seriously...#tableflip has been working very well for me and was super cheap to make. Im in the process of foiling the whole thing, so that will bump up the price.

I find that decks that "ignore" what your opponent has have great potential to beat any deck.

My UW aggro deck: Testify! tries to take the opponent out in the first 3-5 turns, all the counter and removal spells in the world wont help you if you're dead.

Another way to go is land destruction: I Counter Your Land...Wait What? was quite effective, and made for some nail-biting tension, it was a blast watching my opponent struggle to keep cards that they want to cast but can't in their hand, though land destruction is a bit more on the luck side since a potential 3 drop could end the fun.

And on the first thing, I believe other than limited, standard IS the cheapest format.
