Can Dega (BWR) Be Meta in Standard?

Standard forum

I'm starting this thread just to discuss what you guys think of Dega in standard. I love the color combination, and it can be brutally effective when built and played right. So my question to y'all; will Dega see any serious standard play? Is it even viable to play a 3 color deck amongst the devotion decks running a muck?

I saw a B/W/R control deck that was actually pretty good and looked very fun to play. It had mostly black kill spells, with a few burn spells, and then Elspeth, Sun's Champion , Boros Reckoner , Obzedat, Ghost Council , and Blood Baron of Vizkopa as win cons. I'm not really sure how competitive it would be, but again, definitely looked like fun.

Currently I'm working on a deck (DEGA: Dominating Every Game, Always (BWR Midrange)) that includes all of those bombs, coupled with board sweepers like Anger of the Gods and tons of other removal spells. I think this deck has tons of potential, and I'm working on building it irl, but it isn't cheap:P

Yeah, not many 3 color decks are.

Stupid shocks... Oh well, what do you think are some other great cards in these colors?

I mean I think it depends on what you're going for. That deck seems like it has a lot of threats, but maybe not enough utility cards. And since you have red, it wouldn't hurt to throw in a handful of burn spells as pseudo removal or just more direct damage.

Alright, I will take those suggestions to heart and adjust accordingly, or at least try!

Colonial Devotion was pretty fun to play, I only stopped playing so I could trade off my BBVs and Reckoenrs. This was before BNG so it might be better off having access to Temple of Malice .

I remember many seemed to think it would be after Theros was introduced, but it fell out of favor pretty quickly. I still think it can be a very good deck that can win at FNM since it's kind of like the Innistrad-RTR Jund, just a pile of good cards. But I'm not sure that it will ever be Tier 1 since 3 color decks are tough to support right now, especially without Green being one of those colors for Sylvan Caryatid , or access to a reliable and decently costed sweeper like Supreme Verdict .

However, in that block, Jund was quite a successful deck if I remember correctly. Both had good creatures with great abilities, and a suberb removal package. Imo, one of the only different things is the difference in mana bases.

Also, some reliable sweepers are Anger of the Gods and an overloaded Mizzium Mortars

The old Jund existed in a format that had both Shocks and buddy lands like Rootbound Crag , which made 3 color decks much more dominant. Also, I used the term "reliable" because Supreme Verdict doesn't care how big a creature is and it can't be countered. The same cannot be said for Anger of the Gods and Mizzium Mortars .

Also, Dega didn't have any big gets in BNG besides Temple of Malice , so it's hard to imagine that it improved enough to make the jump to tier 1. Like I said, it's still very playable and can win at FNM, but I wouldn't expect to see it making any splashes at pro events.

Very true, I hope to see some good stuff come out of JiN for additions to the deck, since the only good ones we got from BNG was Brimaz, King of Oreskos and Temple of Malice .
