Can Ral Zarek/inspired mechanic work?

I've been thinking about what a new tier 1 deck might be and I started thinking about whether Ral Zarek and the inspired mechanic could work competitively. What do people think? It would probably be either an izzet, American, or possibly B/U/R?

What do the creative people think?

Better be a control shell. Ral doesn't work in much else from my testing.

No. When you're just playing bad cards to "enable" other bad Inspired cards, you don't end up with a good deck.

Hmmm, I like where your idea is heading. I ran Ral with Ratchet Bomb in a Grixis shell a while back, and those small interactions become really important for the long game. Here's my old list if you want to take a look for some ideas.

It's definitely an interesting idea. R/U has some pretty good Inspired creatures; I think Satyr Nyx-Smith could be great in certain matchups (esp. control), Felhide Spiritbinder is enticing (Master of Waves ?), and Arbiter of the Ideal is awesome if you have lots of creatures.

I like Grixis so you can use Siren of the Silent Song and Pain Seer , plus you would have access to ample removal to keep the path clear for your Inspired creatures. RUG looks pretty promising for a more creature-heavy route since you could use Kiora's Follower and Prophet of Kruphix , and there would be plenty of good creatures to copy with Felhide Spiritbinder (ex. Kalonian Hydra , Master Biomancer , Prime Speaker Zegana ) and put into play with Arbiter of the Ideal .
