Cards you'd like to see in the next Theros expansion

Standard forum

With Liliana of the Dark Realms and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx in standard, I'd love to see some X sorceries like: Drain Life and Fireball come back.

What oldie but goody type cards would you love to see come back in the next expansion and why?

gufymike says... #2

the medallion cycle, Pearl Medallion , Sapphire Medallion , etc.. They decrease the cost of your colored spell by 1. I love these cards. That's the main reason. Of the artifact that gives a color bonus, this is my favorite (though probably see this in a core set, if ever).

The medallions also work as rewards for being awesome in your color for the vorthos in you. So a reprint that made them work with devotion, still only 1 less to cast, but only if you have x devotion and they would probably be enchantments. A functional reprint, if they won't do an actual reprint.

I have a very excited feeling that there will be a black/red planeswalker.

I can feel it in my gut.

Also, I can feel it in my suspicions.

smash10101 says... #4

yeah, no way on a medallion reprint, but maybe an enchantment like this:

Black Medallion
BB
Enchantment
Black spells you cast cost 1 less to cast.

Kind of unlikely though, since it's not an effect that is that good on it's own and dual devotion is going to be a thing with the 2-color minor gods

The Doctor says... #5

We need a selesnya and simic walker, too.

November 7, 2013 3:14 p.m.

xXxProjecTxXx says... #6

Heard a rumor there will be multi-colored gods coming in the next set, nothing concrete but that might be interesting!

November 7, 2013 3:47 p.m.

A new Boros 'Walker! Gideon should have been Red-White! Also, I'd love to see oldies like Overgrowth , Fertile Ground , Armor of Faith , and Armor of Thorns make a return. Oh, and it's about time that Glimpse the Unthinkable got reprinted, if only to drive the cost down to a reasonable level. I mean, we've already got "mill 7" and "mill 8" for 2 mana (Mind Sculpt and Breaking), so why not bring back the Glimpse?

I just want to see something like

Heliod's Scorn
2WW
Sorcery
Destroy all lands

November 7, 2013 3:54 p.m.

DaggerV says... #9

I miss the days of land destruction, as annoying as they were.

And why should Gideon have been red/white? Because he was helping Boros?

November 7, 2013 4:07 p.m.

gufymike says... #10

Truly good land destruction hasn't been seen since the days of Ice Age and earlier.

4 color decks running all 5 moxes and lotus and sol ring, with Desert Twister , Disenchant , Armageddon , Sinkhole , Stone Rain , Sinkhole , Thermokarst , Icequake , Mana Barbs and some finisher... this was type 1, before ice age, it was similar, but birds and creature removal instead of the IA cards.

Talk about not being able to play a spell. Even aggro was hard to pull off.

JWiley129 says... #11

xXxProjecTxXx -it's not a rumor, it's confirmed there will be 5 multicolor gods in Born of the Gods and the other five in Journey into Nyx.

And I would like to see some more varied Bestow creatures.

November 7, 2013 4:22 p.m.

BR2 - Wrath of Mogis

Destroy all creatures

Grixis deserves it, screw Esper

November 7, 2013 4:46 p.m.

A competitively playable Dack Fayden as well. Don't care whether he is UR, UB, UBR, or RB. Wizards has teased us with him enough.

November 7, 2013 4:49 p.m.

kanofudo says... #14

A 10-card cycle of 2-color enchantment curses. They've done a lot of top-down work showing the favor of the gods but they seem to forget that the original greek gods were pedantic, selfish, jealous, angry, and downright mean.

I'd like to see a curse for each of the minor gods showing the true vindictiveness of these beings. Also because modern curse deck!

I would be absolutely surprised if Wrath of God isn't in the theros block somewhere. It has the word God in the name!

Something id like to see though is Damnation .

WovenNebula says... #20

Wrath of God and Armageddon and Birds of Paradise and Sneak Attack all need a new standard home again :)

November 7, 2013 5:46 p.m.

mckin says... #21

perfect time to reprint Damnation imo.

multi colored gods worth playing in EDH, something to go with my foil Prophet of Kruphix so its not the only theros card.

devotion based sorceries/instants like Corrupt style

November 7, 2013 5:51 p.m.

Apoptosis says... #22

Damnation would be amazing for B/x control. Imagine B/R with Thoughtseize & Slaughter Games & Anger of the Gods and Damnation ?!?

D'oh!

November 7, 2013 7:19 p.m.

smash10101 says... #23

they can't print Damnation , mono-black would be too good. Wrath of God would be cool though, and it would push esper past mono-black, depending on what else they print

November 7, 2013 9:14 p.m.

DaggerV says... #24

Damnation would be helping esper too you know, which already has enough ammo. Would love for Damnation to come back so i can push towards Grixis instead of Esper. Though I doubt it'll come back. I would love to see a Blue/White god that deals in either hand manipulation ala Nightveil Spectre or Daxos, or increase cost of spells while decreasing yours ala Grand Arbiter.

November 7, 2013 9:37 p.m.

I would LOVE to see a reprint of Condemn or even something very similar.

my minotaur is broken

November 7, 2013 11:39 p.m.

The Doctor says... #27

Why do Wrath of God and Damnation have such a steep price difference when it's literally the same thing just a different color?

November 7, 2013 11:49 p.m.

Replayced says... #28

Different color and limited availability are why it costs so much. Wrath has had a few reprints along with multiple functional reprints.

November 8, 2013 12:20 a.m.

vonbittner says... #29

We can easily guess Pharika is the BG god, probably gorgon-like, Mogis is the BR god. There are rumours Xanagos is going God, too. Maybe Kruphix is the GU god, Karametra should be the GW one.I guess either Asphodel or Phenax is the UB god and Athreos is the BW godIroas might be the RW god and Ephara the UW god.

November 8, 2013 6:49 a.m.

raithe000 says... #30

List of minor gods (based on relevant cards from Theros)

G/W Karametra (Karametra's Acolyte , Setessan Battle Priest flavor text)
W/U Ephara (Ephara's Warden , no confirmation card on U)
R/W Iroas (Priest of Iroas )
W/B Athreos (Scholar of Athreos )
U/R Keranos (Steam Augury flavor text)
U/B Phenax (Disciple of Phenax , no confirmation card on U)
G/U Kruphix (Prophet of Kruphix )
B/R Mogis (Mogis's Marauder , Fanatic of Mogis )
B/G Pharika (Pharika's Mender )
R/G Xenagos (no cards, heavily hinted by Creative)

Since Xenagos probably won't be a god until Journey into Nyx, I predict we will see the Return to Ravnica color mixes (Pharika, Keranos, Karametra, Ephara, and Mogis) in the Born of the Gods, and the rest in Journey into Nyx.

raithe000 nice summary with supporting evidence.

November 8, 2013 9:39 a.m.

Temple of Abandon Heavily hints at there is no r/g god there for I can only imagine it's really gonna be taken up by a certain satyr

November 8, 2013 10:02 a.m.

beakedbard says... #33

It would be cool if Xenagos does become the R/G god they make a card for his god form similar to the minor gods that are going to be released i doubt that will happen though. The main thing i want to see in the next set is some form of black board wipe,

November 8, 2013 11:18 a.m.

harrydemon117 says... #34

If Damnation gets reprinted, Grixis Control will be ALL OVER THAT and be at the top of every standard event for the next year

pharika (god of disease and healing)= bringing back poison decks?

November 8, 2013 5:59 p.m.

kanofudo says... #36

oh god no please not poison. we just got out of that bs

November 8, 2013 7:44 p.m.

IAmKingTony says... #37

Xenagos is a (demi)god in the next set. It makes the most sense in a storyline progression to have the main antagonist reach his strongest point in the 2nd act.

November 9, 2013 1:36 a.m.

KingSorin says... #38

Xenagos is a planeswalker, so I doubt that he's also a god. I've heard somewhere on the wizards site that there were 10 minor gods, but I can't remember where, but I'm pretty sure of this. Also, Agent of Horizons flavour text mentions kruphix also.

November 9, 2013 2:37 a.m.

raithe000 says... #39

@IAmKingTony I disagree. That only makes sense if they want an aftermath effect on Theros. It makes more sense for him to achieve his goal just before the heroes reach him for a final boss fight, which screams third act to me. Also, [this] (http://mythicspoiler.com/nyx/) is an image for Journey into Nyx which shows Xenagos as a God.

@KingSorin [this] (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Multiverse/planeswalkers.aspx?x=mtg/multiverse/planeswalkers/xenagos) is Xenagos's official bio, which mentions him attempting to become a god, as well as the above image. Maro has definitely said there are ten minor gods.

And I didn't cite all the references, just enough for proof.

November 9, 2013 11:39 a.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #42

Xenegos will most likely become a God in the lore; only question is whether or not he'll be reprinted as a God. I'm kinda on the fence about that.

November 9, 2013 11:45 a.m.

kanofudo says... #43

I think it would feel a little weird. Having him as a walker and as a god. It'd make sense with the lore sure, but gameplay wise... eeeeehhhh

November 9, 2013 11:47 a.m.

IAmKingTony says... #44

why?

there's no R/G god, there needs to be a cycle

tell me why this doesn't make sense?

November 9, 2013 11:54 a.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #45

Wizards isn't above reprinting cards differently in the same set. Look at Mikaeus, the Lunarch and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed . If they had really wanted to, they didn't have to print the Unhallowed.

November 9, 2013 12:06 p.m.

I've said it elsewhere on this site but I think Xenagos will appear as the R/G god sans Planeswalker typing. I can't see them printing ANOTHER R/G walker so soon after getting two back-to-back block-wise.

The flavor of the change being he either has to give up his spark to become a god or actively discards it once ascending to godhood and no longer needing/wanting it.

as for reprints. The big two I want are Daybreak Coronet and Damnation.

November 9, 2013 5:12 p.m.

RickyHoeppner says... #47

I havent been playing long enough to be around when Daybreak Coronet was around, but with Ethereal Armor , that card just seems like it would be waaaaay overpowered.

November 9, 2013 5:28 p.m.

IAmKingTony says... #48

T1 Hoplite, T2 Ordeal, T3 Ethereal Armor, Daybreak Coronet....

10/11 first strike, vigilance, lifelink... plus gain 10 life right away

November 9, 2013 6:52 p.m.

Tilwin says... #49

I actually expect Born of the Gods to be focused on dual-colored cards. Since the gods are related to devotion and linked to one color alone, it seems natural that hybridization of colors would be one way to express going against them. There would be no explanation otherwise story-related as to why the temples were inserted in a format that would encourage only mono-colored decks.

And yes, we probably need yet again a red/white planeswalker. Or at least a decent black one.

November 14, 2013 2:44 a.m.

HUFFDADDY says... #50

Yes, I too think it's time for Wrath of God , Armageddon and Birds of Paradise to see a come back. I'd also love it if they brought back some cards with madness or created some new ones with that ability, it was so much fun.
