Cheap, effective, (tribal) decks

Standard forum

I'm looking to build a cheap but viable tribal deck for (post-theros rotation) standard play.

I'm already working on a Sliver deck (Can't Reach My Sliver) right now but it will obviously lack flexibility and can evidently be countered easily. Especially with guildgates slowing it down (might go for shock lands but only if I get them outta trades or boosters).

Also, you should know that I play with a specific group of people and we kind of established our meta-game where we try and build cheap casual decks. We don't really want to go competitive.

That said, what would be your suggestion of a cheap but effective deck? Tribal, preferably.

There aren't really very man options. After Slivers, the only other semi-supported tribal right now is Minotaur with the two lords in Theros. You might be able to do a bit of humans, but there are relatively few cards in standard right now that care about humans (Xathrid Necromancer , one of the pegasi in Theros whose name I can't remember, and Door of Destinies are all I know of).

Out of curiosity, if your playgroup is casual, why does this deck have to be standard?

Thanks for your reply raithe000. I'll have a look at the Minotaurs (do you have any card to refer more specifically?). Also, that necro is pretty strong. Interesting...

"Out of curiosity, if your playgroup is casual, why does this deck have to be standard?"

Hmm, good point. Well, first, we have a lot of new player and I think fewer cards restricts deckbuilding options so they're not overwhelmed. Also, the smaller the meta-game and the number of cards, the easier it is to balance and to keep the same level of decks.

Also, if you take out the tribal restriction, do you have anything else in mind for cheap, viable standard decks?

The two Minotaur Lords I was referring to are Rageblood Shaman and Kragma Warcaller . There are a number of Minotaurs in black and red in Theros, and several in Red and White in RTR block.

I'd try making a deck based on the new Heroic mechanic. Looks like it could be fun.

RickyHoeppner is right...human tribal is tons of fun...I'm just sad that my human deck, Hugh Man, is going out of standard and I don't want to change it to accomodate...minotaur tibal could be fun as well and I already drafted out one, Mini Minotaur, and it doen't always work when I playtest it but it usually allows for some funny shenanigans
