Cheating caught by SCG

Just got clued in on this.
If you watch him closely you can see him stack his opponent's deck and ends up making him mull to 5.
Damn that's shady....
SCG has the ball rolling on him already so we'll see.
Why do people try stuff like this?

I mean I can stack decks and bottom deal but I DON'T. I just don't understand why he would try this. There are enough of us who know how it's done that somebody was going to notice.

people try it because they think they can get away with it. It keeps paying off until you get caught.
As for me, I like matches where my deck and the opponent's perform their best, so people cheating like that makes me sad D:

I don't think he tried anything, it was a very successful con.
When you actually see this part of the shuffle in real time, it's very smooth. He's been at this sort of thing for a while.

The funny part of this whole thing for me is that I actually just realized that I sat next to a guy during the Legacy portion on Sunday that said he had to mull to five twice against his opponent in the top 8 of the Standard Open. Interesting indeed.

If my opponent ever shuffles my deck in lieu of a cut, I shuffle it again when I get it back, I've been burned by that sort of sleight of hand before. If they do it again on the second game, I shuffle theirs right back.

I should specify that by tournament protocol, I mean the rules that govern Competitive and Professional REL events. At Regular REL, pile cutting is acceptable.

Yeah, didn't know that about tourneys. Never been to one. I play FNM, pretty much everybody at my LGS pile cuts. Thanks for clarifying each rule, prevents me from committing a social faux pas at a qualifier.

I honestly didn't catch it. I had to see a slowed down gif version to see the thumb to the top, so a golden star goes to whoever spotted this.

TehCoopeh It's much easier to see it from above with the camera angle like that.
When you're sitting at the table chatting with your opponent, and his hands are covering most of it from your angle it's much harder to spot. A lot of folks have reported that he's outwardly a very nice fellow too, which many believe is part of the distraction from what he's doing.
However, I did read/hear that a judge did get involved with his shuffling during the Modern event the next day - though I didn't catch what the resolution of that was.

I learn something new every dang say on this site. I hate it when people grab up my deck and shuffle instead of cut it. Now i know why they do it. I guess ill start doing the same in lieu of just cutting it.

Quadsimotto Depending on the event's rule enforcement level, at Competitive or higher you're required to shuffle your opponent's deck after they have presented.

Wow!! What a scum bag.. I really hope Dylan gets the first place prize. He deserves it. I was rooting for him the whole time and now that I find out he was cheated it makes me kinda mad.. No one likes a cheater, especially in magic. I would never trust/ wanna play with this guy. He is def going to get the hate and embarrassment he deserves.

magic_monicle When these kind of things happen they actually won't slide prizes down the line like that, they simply donate what the offender would have won to charity.

This guy is really slick. Makes you wonder how he didn't realize that he was on camera and was bound to get caught by the overhead angle due to where he shuffles the deck. I guess people like this tend to arrogantly think they'll never get found out.

What a prick. Who knows how long he's done this and how many of his prior successes can be attributed to it? I'm glad about the investigation. This chump needs to be made an example of, especially since there are almost assuredly others like him. He needs to get his just desserts, in a big and public way. I'd be fine with him receiving an indefinite ban from tournament play. People like him are the last thing the Magic community needs.
If he gets strung up, I hope it will cut down on the cheating that still regrettably occurs at tournaments.

Well, it's within the year probably. His record shows a few top 16 performances last year, but recently it's been all top 8s.

Yes, that does seem rather suspect. I hate to be the person who attributes somebody's success to cheating, because normally that's immature and unsporting. But there's some troubling evidence here. I'd estimate that a portion of those top 8 appearances were due to his cheating. That's just completely low...

I'm not really up to date with this but i assume the guy can play well without cheating. I don't get why people like that feel the need to cheat isn't it better knowing you've played your best even if you lose? That's my two cents anyways i'd much rather lose a fair game than win a cheated game.

Actually... if you watch the games he plays, and not just the shuffling, you'll see he's not that good of a player.

He was watching the guy shuffle his deck the whole time, how did he not notice? I would have had a judge shuffling my deck so fast.
