Why does control have so few of one card? (I am new to control!). I was looking at the 'undefeated standard decklist' page on wizards, and control decks had, 1 ugin, 1 pearl lake ancient etc.

I mean I dont know the exact list but normally they only run 1 or 2 win condidtions because they only need one and dont want to draw multiple and have one sit in their hand. When you think about it both ugin and pearl lake are very powerful and relatively resislient and so it would suck to have another ancient in your hand just sitting there or even 2 when you are constantly bouncing it. As far as any other card as a 1 of its probably because its a slow but powerful or useful spell and they only want one especially since they have such card selection and card draw that they are more likely to see it than other decks so they are ok to only play 1.

Well it depends on the deck but you usually want more than just one win condition, because otherwhise you are just to vulnerable to cards like Despise, Infinite Obliteration and the like. Take for example the Esper Dragons list (my personal favorite). It usually runs a playset of Ojutai and two other dragons (DL Silumgar or Silumgar, tDD). The Esper deck can even win by attacking with Shambling Vent or milling the Oponent with Jace's ultimate, although admittedly it these things don't happen too often.

Control is a long, slow game.

You are basically stopping everything your Opponent does until you are ready to bring out your finishers.

Since these usually cost a lot of mana, you don't want them in your opening hands, so a smaller number of them is better.

Since games go on for so long with Control, eventually you will end up with one of your Win Cons in hand. At that stage your Opponent will have next to nothing, and you can attack with ease.
