Ok question. I have a courser in play and i played a land during my turn there is a land on the top of my deck can i play that one as well and any others that show up on the top of my deck or am i limited to just one land per turn no matter what the card says?

The card allows you to play lands from the top of your deck, but you are still limited to playing one land per turn. Cards that break that limit clearly say so, i.e. Oracle of Mul Daya .

P.S use the mtg q&A link for rules questions.

you can still only play one land per turn unless a card specifically says so like Oracle of Mul Daya and Urban Evolution . Being able to play a land off the top of your library just helps you dig through your library and can help you hit land drops that you may otherwise miss.

It also shows your opponent every card you draw...

@Schuesseled ~ while you are of course correct on that point I feel the need to say (as someone currently piloting a deck with Courser of Kruphix ) that that drawback is actually fairly minimal. Let me explain my OPINION on this topic.

While it does show your opponent everything you draw it also shows you. Which is nothing to laugh at. It can lead to you playing the cards they can't see(stuff that was already in you're hand) differently as you know what's coming.

Also being able to draw card for turn and see that your top card is a land and play from the library thus clearing your draws of land drops is quite powerful.

Not to mention he hoses aggro in most cases thanks to having a big ass and gaining life. Lol

The pros of card advantage, life gain, and hitting your land drops far outweigh the con of giving your opponent information imo, especially since it's typically played in decks that are meant to put the pressure on your opponent and thus are full of threats for them to worry about.

PS: no, you do not get to play extra lands as others have stated.

You guys wont be so cheerful when your opponent has a Dakra Mystic out and an untapped Island

Schuesseled while you again have a valid point that is also comparable as saying "I shouldnt run XXXX creature because they might have removal" or "I shouldn't play XXX spell because they might be holding a counter". Nothing is ever going to be all powerful or omnipotent.

Dakra Mystic would definitely hurt more if they mill away an Elspeth, Sun's Champion or some other power card or win con but in my opinion, they would be milling you for 2 whether they knew what was coming or not. That example would just let them know they were getting more than a land. Granted it gives them accuracy but they would have done it anyway is all I'm saying.

Schuesseled, too bad Dakra Mystic has no place in competitive standard because of it's weak body, and the fact that it's ability won't even help you without helping your opponent. Mono-blue has better drops, control wipes it away with it's sweepers, and any other color combo has better one drops in Rakdos Cackler , Experiment One , Firedrinker Satyr , Dryad Militant , Soldier of the Pantheon , Legion Loyalist , Judge's Familiar , and Cloudfin Raptor .

Not always bellock, they might have used their mana for something else but saw your threat on top and kept mana open instead.

but i take ur point

I play courser in modern Jund. I was a skeptic. But, after taking it for a spin, the information that it gives the opponent, usually makes them overextend (like say, if they see a bolt on the top, or a goyf). They will run right into my bolt or decay in my hand.

If I see a land on top, and say a couple bobs out, I may keep the land on top to minimize the pain.

It also functions well with fetches in my deck. If i do not want any more land, I may crack a fetch to shuffle my library and get a new top deck.

There are many, extremely useful approaches to courser. In standard, it can peel a land from the top, and allow me to get a better draw from Underworld Connections .

Schuesseled, you have to believe me. The card is awesome, you just have to use it a few times

I use it just fine in EDH, where it belongs.

The biggest problem I have with the way courser is used in standard is this phrase:

"especially since it's typically played in decks that are meant to put the pressure on your opponent and thus are full of threats for them to worry about."

Why are you running a 2/4 blocker in an aggressive deck, it's not even a mana dork?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I feel like screaming this at every GR Monster's net decker. Annoyingly the dude hampers aggro strategies so it means my new redesigned blitz deck has got to get past his overused ass, which just thoroughly depresses me.

Note to self, do not use the phrase overused ass.

I think if Monsters cut 2-4 lands from their decks, and this scrub they could do some much better things with their creature base, and they have less land to block their top decks thus needing less fixing in the first place.

GR Monsters and similar variants are aggressive, but they are still a hair slower than pure aggro since they have to spend the first couple turns ramping. Thus, Courser helps against decks like RDW, White Weenie, etc. by being able to survive those early turns thanks to its blocking and life gain (this also applies to Burn matchups somewhat).

It also helps against decks with removal / boardwipes with its card advantage and help with hitting land drops in case you need to cast your Stormbreath Dragon or Garruk, Caller of Beasts without the help of dorks. While it's not a house by itself, it will help you draw into more threats and have the land to play them. There's really no matchup in which this guy isn't helpful in some way.

When I put Courser into my GU Monsters deck, my win rate jumped up to about 80%. Also, I was only running 22 lands, and he certainly helped me to hit land drops, so if you're thinking about cutting lands, you DEFINITELY want this guy.

I feel like courser belongs in a pure to the core, midrange deck.

See also: modern Jund.

By the way. Noted. Don't use the term "overused ass".
