Deflecting Palm Poop or not poop?

Good card or does it require a specific circumstance to be worth a place in a sideboard?

First of all, please link all the cards you are talking about.

Even if I don't play a lot standard, I would say it is a good card, not only for sideboarding, cause it allows you to redirect all damage from a source. For example, you can choose creatures, and redirect all combat damage to your opponent when he alpha strikes for 10000000 damage.

I'd say poop. It requires that your opponent be playing with big creatures, which is a little less than half the field now, and it only ever saves you like 5 life unless its in the heroic matchup.

Poop.

I could imagine specific situations where it would be great (like you are in a race against a deck with big monsters) but usually it wouldn't be worth the spot. Too conditional and doesn't even deal with specific threats.

One source is one object on the field. You cannot choose a class of sources and redirect all of the damage from that class. If your opponent swings with a billion dudes, you have to pick one because they are all individual sources.

That's ... that's not what a source is.

The source of damage is the object that dealt it. If an effect requires a player to choose a source of damage, he or she may choose a permanent, a spell on the stack (including one that creates a permanent), or any object referred to by an object on the stack (including a creature that assigned combat damage on the stack, even if the creature is no longer in play or is no longer a creature). A source doesnt need to be capable of dealing damage to be a legal choice. See rule 419.8, Sources of Damage.

The sweetest thing you can do with Deflecting Palm is choose your opponent's Emrakul, because Deflecting Palm is a "choice" not a "target" otherwise it's usually going to be a 2-5 point burn spell, which is only OK.

Thaks ThatJunkMage, I did not know that!

It's hilarious against R/G Devotion.

I'm gonna make a silly Standard deck with this and Mindswipe tied together with Soulfire Grand Master. Be right back.

I wouldn't call it poop, but yeah, it's less awesome than it looks. The fact you can target even hexproof and pro-red/white with it is nice (and I wasn't aware of it until now, I must admit), but still. It's a dead card against too many decks, even in Standard.

It's great in the right sort of build. My Canadian Burn deck uses it to great effect, but it's not the sort of spell you can fit in anywhere.

Compare it to Comeuppance.

Now that's a good spell.

Grand Hand feat. The Psychic Bitchslap. This is a bad deck but I'd like someone to come up with a more optimixed, Standard-considerate version.

It's a good sideboard card if your meta is flooded by Heroic or Devotion, where they're only attacking with one or two things.

I use it sideboard particularly against Temur Ascendency combo where you can reflect an infinite Polukranos or Gen Hydra.

I say not poop. Crater's Claws is doing well at finishing games. Stoke the flames to the face being turned around is a nice swing in your favor. It will make a good sideboard card for a boros or R/W aggro, from what i read earlier that build is doing well right now too. I have been beaten by this card that someone sided in against me just for my fat bodied unblockable fabled hero.

I keep it in the sideboard against heroic and monster decks. It's also good against abzan if they start pumping a deathdealer.

A fun interaction is Deflecting Palm + Temur Battle Rage

February 28, 2015 3:21 p.m.

Its effectivenesss will change based on the matchup But its never really a dead cards, and sometimes its a game winner

March 2, 2015 12:11 a.m.

Oh and think about how bad it screws whip decks not only is it dealing them damage but it stops the life gain from the chosen creature.

March 2, 2015 12:19 a.m.

Kroto the interaction between Deflecting Palm + Temur Battle Rage doesnt work because deflecting palm only affects the next time the damage would be dealt not all times until eot
