Any chance my favorite control win-con can actually seem some play in Standard with all this discard tech going on in SOI?

I don't think it's impossible. The presence of Delve spells made her especially undesirable, and the discard could help. She's no AEtherling and doesn't do much against a World Breaker or anything overly big, but I think she has a better chance than she did pre-Shadows.

Sphinx of the Final Word is far better. It dodges anything other than wipes and edicts.

I want so much for this card to be good. But it isn't and never will be ;_;

It's a five mana 3/4 that you have to untap with, and pay a bunch of mana to maybe do 5 damage, or win in combat.

Yeah, this card sucks.

Is everybody ignoring the first mode? Or am I just crazy?

It's OK, but not hitting creatures hurts. By time you play her, your opponent will be easily able to pay the 2 mana so you have to activate it at least twice.

two mana counter target spell unless your opponent pays 4 seems solid. The instants and sorceries won't be an issue if you focus the deck well enough. And any creatures that resolve past your other counter spells you just kill.

I feel like the art of control is dead in everything except the eternal formats right now.

I think she is basically unplayable.

She dies to Roast, Grasp of Darkness, Languish, etc. She can't close out a game easily, and she requires a ton of instants or sorceries to be cast before she comes down to give her pseudo protection, with no hard protection at all.

It could be a janky finisher, but not enough to allow for a real honest-to-goodness blue counter-magic control deck to prosper.
