Does Oath bring power back into Standard?

Standard forum

One of the biggest issues is the lack of standard players in my community. Ok I shouldn't say that but most MTG players in my town prefer Modern. Having said that, there were some HUGE turnouts at this pre-release, so the question now becomes this: Does Oath do anything for the format to make it relevant and competitive with Modern?

It is a slight rise in power, but still nowhere near as strong as modern. Modern will now be a T5 Format (I guess) - standard is still far away from that. It does get more interessting now I'd say. Colorless will be an actual archtype now.

I think a lot of people who loved the OG ROE Eldrazi will be happier with the OGW Eldrazi. They seem more in-flavor with the original Eldrazi. This could be the set that sees them come back into Standard. (At least, that's the sentiment with a few people that I know.)

Standard is still played much more widely than Modern, from what I gather. The format is strong. However, you may be seeing the result of the current price of playing standard. This is one of the priciest standard environments to ever exist and it has driven many people out of the format -- temporary or otherwise. Even I (and I love standard), have had to hang in the towel because I just can't pay them any more money. It's all gone, WOTC.

As far as power goes, we now have an instant speed Pyroclasm, Kozilek's Return with a somewhat relevant ability. We also got a new Vendilion Clique that will be viable in ever deck that can generate colorless specific mana, Thought-Knot Seer. Another 3 mana planeswalker, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar. We also have a new eldrazi titan, Kozilek, the Great Distortion. Stormchaser Mage seems very interesting in standard and possibly modern.

We also have a new combo enabler, Eldrazi Displacer. You pair this with Brood Monitor and Zulaport Cutthroat/Altar of the Brood which seems fairly competitive for something that could be built a=on a relatively low budget.

That_Guy_You_Know If you get those three cards in play; you win. You start an endless loop of sacing 3 Scions and them losing three life/milling the deck to power the Displacer

Virulent Plague may become relevant sideboard to prevent the loop.

Rayenous maybe so, but only for a couple of months. Then it can't be used in standard

And since there's green in play; there is enchantment removal

That is true.... plus, even with Virulent Plague in play, it's still ": Opponent loses 3 life, you gain 3 life." (not as good with Altar of the Brood, where it's "opponent mills 4".)

Good point Rayenous, it doesn't stop the combo, but it breaks the loop.

I may have to assemble a B/G combo deck with this; this seems like a killer.

I wish I had your problem, I want to play modern but there isn't a crowd here.
