Etb and hushwing gryff

Okay so I'm wondering is there an instance when a spell with an etb ability resolves and then said ability going off such as grey merchant or master of waves, if there is what would be the correct timing and phrasing to flash in a Hushwing Gryff to cancel these abilities? I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum but I didn't see a rules one. Thanks!

I would think you would flash in a Hushwing Gryff when the opponent passes priority after casting a spell that has an ETB effect. If you flash it in after the permanent enters the battlefield, the ability is already triggered and flashing in the Gryff won't cancel the trigger.

They cast, you flash in Hushwing Gryff as a response. Hushwing Gryff resolves first, their etb abilities do not resolve.
At least that is my understanding of it.
