Fate Reforged (Standard) Esper Control

If you think about it, Esper Control Could Be The Next Best Thing In Standard With End Hostilities and Crux of Fate being two great board wipes. With Banishing Light, Dissolve, Negate, Hero's Downfall, and Murderous Cut There Are So Many Great Removal Spells In Esper. Also There Is Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver for Win Conditions. What Do You Guys Think?

I've been working on Esper control since before Khans was fully released.

I'm sure Crux of Fate will be a great addition, but with already having access to End Hostilities and Perilous Vault, I'm not sure another sweeper will be needed.

Grixis (or other //x colour combos) could be a thing though, running Stormbreath Dragon and whatever other dragons we see coming.

I would like to think at this point esper is dead (for the time being) in standard. Esper has had a pretty good run since innastrad and really got going just before khans came out and took supreme verdict, sphinx's rev and AEtherling with it. It got pretty boring playing the same game every time with an esper deck wait till turn 4, supreme verdict, counter, counter, bounce, kill, bounce, bounce, AEtherling, sphinxes rev, pump swing, pump swing, pump swing, GG next game (note that I said playing NOT playing against Esper).

Personal opinions aside, Esper would have trouble dealing with things like Savage Knuckleblade and Hooded Hydra. The first being a new AEtherling but for more aggro based decks and the second one pretty much discouraging all sweeps except Perilous Vault.

On the other hand, you have Utter End for removal of both creature and planeswalkers, Wingmate Roc and Nyx-Fleece Ram for sustainability and who can forget Treasure Cruise for drawing everything you need.

Overall while Esper may be playable, it probably won't be able to compete with Jeskai or Temur decks that have plenty of cards made just for them while esper is only using only the scraps from other shards/wedges.

Esperanza is not dead yet. It has a great control/Superfriends build that has plenty of powerful tools, including Dig. Ashton is seeing a resurgence too. I don't think Crux of Fate will change much since it already has plenty of sweepers in the five-drop slot (as others mentioned). Plus, the mana base for Esper is great now, with two fetches in its colors, plus the temples. Post-board, it even has a great shot at winning against aggro decks like RDW.

Who knows what Dragon tribal might bring, though? Something tells me there won't be much for Esper though, outside perhaps Ugin who will likely be our second colorless walker (though he mightn't be printed until Dragons of Tarkir).

LMFAO on the capitalizing, btw, MTGPlus. Are you German? And even then it'd only be the nouns...

Pretty good. Reminds me of Azorius Charm last season. Also, Jeskai Charm on my RDW creatures, like was happening to me last night! I don't think it should be more than a singleton, though. A cool piece nonetheless.

JakeHarlow I am German, but I do not live in Germany. I live in the U.S. just so you know... and ScragglyMan, the win con for the Esper Deck that I am making is Brimaz, King of Oreskos. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/esper-control-in-standard-what/

@ MTGPlus: Es tut mir leid, I didn't know you were German. :)

Brimaz is a great card, but I feel like he's a bit tough to build around since you need to protect him from removal, either via countermagic or protection cards like Gods Willing and Ajani's Presence. He's legendary, and prone to removal, despite his formidable strengths. I'd add some other win cons. Sorin and Ashiok are promising in their own ways. Ashiok is awful vs certain builds, but can do wonders if dropped early in the right games.

Also, to correct my drunken autocorrect in my first post:

  • "Esperanza" was supposed to just be "Esper," lol

  • "Ashton" was supposed to be "Ashiok"
