First deck in New Standard?

Standard forum

Hey guys,

So i'm having a bit of trouble with this one. I can't decide which deck archetype is the better choice to run for the first new FNM coming up next week.

At the moment, I've decided that I want to run black (mostly because I have a lot of the pieces for a good black deck), and have gotten my choices down to Mono Black Aggro, or BW Constellation Midrange.

Arguments for MBA:

It's a very fast deck that puts a lot of pressure on the opponents that are trying out the wacky (read "Bad") wedge based control decks, as well as any deck that just isn't ready for it. It curves out at three, which means that it can get under pretty much everything in the format.

BWC:

It's a midrange deck with a very large, expansive butt. The lifegain from Nyx-Fleece Ram and Underworld Coinsmith combined with the huge toughness of most of the creatures gives aggro lists a hard time fighting through, and landing a Doomwake Giant is just devastating.

I'd like to hear some opinions on both of these builds, along with any variants that I could try out of them. My other two immediate alternatives are BG Constellation, and Rabble Red.

I'd also like to hear what some of you guys are planning on playing (or played, if you didn't draft last night) in this new standard for the first few weeks!

Thanks guys!

I think it would be better to start off this Standard with the Constellation list. There has been lots of talk about Mono-B and Mono-R aggro, so I'd expect them to be prevalent (Mono-R is usually more so after any rotation).

Then, later in the season if you still want to play Mono-B aggro, I think decks will become much grinder, and shift towards Midrange style decks. I think Bloodsoaked Champion will shine in those match-us.

Sometime soon, I hope to break Godsend

I played my aggressive soldiers iroas deck and placed third, winning 2-0 against midrange, 2-0 against heroic aggressive, and lost 2-1 against control which i am confident i can beat in the future. I feel this deck is well suited to the format due to its massive removal suite available which it can sideboard in against aggro, it can run under a lot of midrange decks because of its creature density, and the late game bombs of Elspeth, Sun's Champion , Soul of Theros , and Scuttling Doom Engine let it shape up well against control.

Mono Black Aggro is the better deck, IMO and will continue to be.
