First FNM, What to Expect/ Is this a Good Deck?

Standard forum

Hello everyone! I have always built legacy and modern for decks and the only "tournaments" I have gone to are casual Sunday and casual Wednesday at Jupiter Games, though I have had many ideas for standard, and I have a start on the deck Standard Black "Suicide". I was wondering, what can I expect to see/play at an FNM? What is the meta like at an FNM? And, is this deck viable, with some tweaks, to take and possibly win at an FNM? Thanks for the help!

Your meta will probably be different from other players' metas. There's no single makeup that all FNMs have. You should try to scope out what others are playing before the event starts and between rounds. Since this is your first noncasual event, make sure you are clear about everything you're doing. You don't need to give a play-by-play to your opponent, but announce each step and phase change and make sure you're surveying the battlefield and analyzing the board state.

As for the deck, you'll probably have some trouble with board wipes like Supreme Verdict .

Be prepared for a lot of burn decks that come from the Rakdos side of the field. I play standard normally and it's never really about how much money you are willing to spend in this format, it's about who can deal the most damage in the shortest amount of time. Also a lot of aggro Selesnya decks that run Armada Wurm and things similar should be rolling around somewhere. All and all, after Gatecrash I would be ready for anything that could outrun your deck in mana cost and in terms of how quick you can dodge spells

Yea, Ive played at three different stores in the current standard and every time there is at least one Black Red aggro deck and one Black/(blue or red) zombies. They are both fast and aggressive and can win out on turn 4 or 5 rather consistently, Kill spells are typically useful against these decks early game as they struggle late game. After that the variance of the decks in the current standard is so diverse that local metas can't be pinpointed as Epochalyptik mentioned

I also have another deck that pumps Nivmagus Elemental . Thanks for the advice, I will look out for the board sweeps and controlly type decks.

I have a very small budget, and I've seen on Tappedout some nasty fast stuff. I need to make a deck that can outrun everyone in that case. Thanks for the tips!

Remember, the most important thing at your first FNM is to have fun. If you're not sure how your decks will run in against the popular ones in your area anyway, take the deck you find most fun to play. You might do better than you think, and some people will even compliment unique decks. As you see what's popular you can adjust your style. Remember, it is a game, so most people will be there to have fun, even if some are overly competitive.
