Flip Cards In Tournament?
Standard forum

I was playing in a Standard Tournament last night with my deck: Thor's Hammer and Poor Grammar when I came across something strange. My opponent was playing a Jund Midrange deck with Huntmaster of the Fells Flip , but instead of Huntmaster in a sleeve, there was one of the Flip-card checklists in it's place and the Huntmaster's were in clear sleeves at the side. When I asked him why he did that, he told me that you have to do that because of a new rule in Tournament. I know nothing about this especially since I run Huntmaster of the Fells Flip in my Standard deck. Clarification?

What if I use Black Ultra Pro sleeves? Does this depend on the Brand of sleeves you use? Or does it depend on the colour?

Yeah you can use Balck Ultra Pro sleevess, that "opaque" rule means as long as the sleeve isn't see through or clear. So any of the colored sleeves from Ultra-Pro, Dragon's Shield and the like are good.

As long as you can't see through the sleeves. at all. then that is okay.

the3rdH0kage You have to watch out on some of them though. The red Ultra-Pros appear oqague, but they can be seen through in the right angle/light.
Ultimately, just make sure all your sleeves can't be seen through at all, and it never hurts to have spare sleeves and/or money on hand to buy new ones at any tournament.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I was worried I was doing something wrong, but it's fine.

Slycne I didn't know about the Red ones I only use Balck for my MTG decks. I think black just looks better then other colors.

I unfortunately invested in the red ultra-pro's and you can clearly the see the card backs even in not too bright light. I just wanted to go with a unique color in my group and probably should have chosen differently.

Just check with a judge before a tournament if you aren't sure. Any self-respecting game-shop should be able to donate 4 checklist cards to your cause, should your judge not be okay with the sleeves.

I use black sleeves all the time and never encounter any problems, and almost every creature I run in my tournament deck is a flip card.

Very comprehensive rules are posted here. http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/innistrad/dfcrules A little confusing at first, but makes total sense. Either use good sleeves, or; Buy the checklist cards you need, mark them as that card, and use them in place of the actual doublefaced card in your deck. Set the real copies aside and use them once they come into play or are visible to opponents (exiled, graveyard, etc). Keep in mind also if your opponent has, say, Telepathy out, they're entitled to see both sides of the real doublefaced card, not just the checklist card you're using in place.
Sleeves seem to be easier, but never hurts having a backup. Matches have been forfeited for less.

This was the official rule as of February, and I couldn't find anything indicating it has changed since.
"The use of checklist cards is required if a player has double-faced cards in his or her deck and is not using completely opaque sleeves."
I know some players simply prefer to use checklist cards as to not put unnecessary wear and tear on the cards though.
