What are your favourite, and least favourite, parts of building a deck that you actually go on to play at FNM or Showdown?

We're talking original Standard decks ONLY, not someone else's idea that you have tweaked.

Best parts:

  • Looking at a newly released card that sparks an idea

  • Finding lots of cards that work for an idea

  • Orders that arrive for a deck you are building

  • Finishing a deck in paper

  • Having a eureka moment where you realise that, if you swap a couple of cards, or change numbers slightly, the deck will start to hum

  • Having your deck start to beat most other decks

Worst parts:

  • Knowing that you need to change something about a deck, but you're not quite sure what

  • Having to go through your collection to work out how many cards you need to order

  • Playing your deck at tournament, and getting soundly beaten

  • Realising that an idea that SEEMS like it should work, is never going to work

The life of a brewer.

My favorite part: finding the newest bizarre card like Midnight Oil or Lich's Mastery, and finding how to make it work.

My least favorite part: rotation! lol. But it's always sad when a part of the engine rotates.

Worst part is trying to brew around a card that has a lot of potential and realizing there isnt enough support from other cards to make a coherent deck.

Best part is finding a janky interaction that isnt actually good but will kill an opponent in a very round about way.

Best part for me is finding a card i didnt think much of beforehand, and then realizing something cool can be made with it from other deck ideas i've had

For me there are two parts of the process that are most rewarding. First, just looking through cards for synergies and building something is so fun. I spend much more time brewing decks than I do actually playing MtG. But also, as good as that is taking your creation to the table and having it work. Especially when it not only works, but does really well. My favorite moment of MtG to date was winning 1st place at FNM when I was 13 with a budget home brew. There is no better feeling.

The worst part is finding an amazing idea for standard, only for rotation to be next week, or to not be able to afford cards like push or scrub god, that don't add anything but just make the deck more likely to function

The best could be brainstorming all the interactions possible with each new card (like with Pitiless Plunderer and Oathsworn Vampire) also running over the tier 1 decks with a good draw is one of the highlights.
