I keep hearing bad... but it's only because people are stuck on thinking his ult needs to be huge to finish it after a clear.
What i'm thinking is... White Blue.
4 mana: Gideon, use +1 (Gives ~1-3 Counters) = 4-7 Counters.5 mana: Use +1 (for 1-3 counters) = 5-10.
Supreme Verdict. Clears all creatures.
If success, attack for 5-10 dmg per turn and win.
If fail, you still have a full board and gideon. Grow him.
People will be all worried about his ult, just supreme verdict and win before they can get a counter in place.

I built this to show that if you wipe the board enough, even like a 6/6 gideon will finishit easily. He shouldn't be playerd turn 4, that is when you play a more controlliing guy like jace or tamiyo. Hes a finisher that evades instant speed removal. Also, you can side negate against dreadbore. He isnt there to be an immediate board presence, that is what everybody is getting wrong. He has to come in later in esper control to clean up amidst Terminus and Supreme Verdict .

tamiyo definitely give immediate value. she can keep an opponent's threat locked down until you can better deal with it.

the reason he is considered not good for standard, doesn't mean he is bad, is because he has no value the turn it enters play all you can do is + counters until you feel you can start attacking he is never meant to ulti so no one is going to worry about it and with all the removal in standard no one would care after a boardwipe either I have a junk control deck but I still wouldn't play this over something like Obzedat, Ghost Council because there is very few that can affect it and it has value the turn it enters play but gideon has no such value as it is easily dealt with if they have creatures and if they don't they can still use cards like Dreadbore , Oblivion Ring , Detention Sphere and others that can make him a 1 for 1 but no extra value unlike garruk which can draw cards or fight a creature depending on which one played, jace who can draw or mill with adept or keep creatures down or hand advantage with architect, liliana can get you land or kill a creature with dark realms or kill a creature with the veil, tamiyo and ajani don't have immediate value but they help cement board presence or help control so that is their value but with gideon he doesn't help your board presence, hand presence or advantage so it is considered a decent planeswalker that might sideboard against creature heavy decks but other then that I don't see it being played competitively.
